thank you so much for this video. I think it's very human and beautiful to see other non-expert skaters like me making common mistakes and then showing how to solve them. I just think it's more useful/educational, rather than showing a perfect tutorial never mentioning the unexpected sides. We learn from mistakes, thank you linda
It matters as throughout history it has been very difficult for Black people to own their own business. When Black people had their own Wall Street it was bombed (push back/suppression is one of the reasons why there is not a lot of generational wealth in the community). Living in a country where racism is paramount and where systemic racism exist, it's challenging for Black people to get the same opportunities. Knowing a company is Black-owned is great for Black people since we are also supporting our fellow people. Some non-Black people who are allies, who are not racist, may be happy to support Black-owned companies as well. If a business is established by Jewish people, Jewish people may feel happy to support the owner (just an example). There is some comfort and joy in investing/supporting the community you are a part of.
I've also tried to make vans skates, and also got my aluminum insoles from Etsy. It's comforting to know my struggles weren't just me not knowing what I'm doing. ❤️
Love how honest this vid is about how much of a learning process and time commitment (not to mention potentially dangerous) it is to make your own skates esp when you have little to no experience with using power tools. The struggle is real but satisfying! Congrats! It gets easier after more builds, but I understand how once is enough :)
In one video of a custom build I watched, they started with a small drill bit and then went up in size to widen the whole. I can't wait the try, I've seen so many videos but Im a complete beginner so I needed to see one from a beginner
I love watching you figure things out! It's worth so much to see someone's mistakes and learn from them! And I may need it some day, since there are no rollerskate shops near me. Somehow, people around here do skateboarding, longboarding and inline skating.. but not quad skating. :'(
They turned out beautiful! I wonder if you can just purchase all of the skate parts without using old skates since I don’t have. Might be pricer that way and better to just buy a pair of skates. But those white vans though 😍
I'm in the process of building my own vans skates. I probably ordered my aluminum plates from the same easy seller cause I have the same issue with it fitting
I just found your channel and subscribed because I'm enjoying seeing your learning and skill building in skating. Today l skated for the first time since I was 10 years old, I'm now 37. I chose with my partner to begin this as a new fun activity for us to do together and it's great 🙂 thank you for your videos and inspiration of skating
I did the same when my Rio Roller signatures died, I really liked the plate so I converted some CCM ice hockey skates to roller skates. The ice skates are TOUGH! So they won't be falling appart any time soon.
Thank you for doing all this learning for us!! Lol very informative and even though you made these mistakes for us this still seems daunting 😬 maybe one day!!
As as a mechanical design engineer I will recommend that once you have the holes drilled on the "aluminum insole plates" to go ahead and have them cut to similar size plates of the original metal plates you removed from the skates. The reason is that the vans shoes will have too much stiffness on the bed and your feet will get sore after a few hours of skating. This is due to your foot needing a flexible platform to move in when leaning forward or sideways while skating.
At 8:14 in your video I see the plates you removed originally. Take those and trace the plate shaped onto your new aluminum plates. Then using a small Dremel tool with metal cutting wheel or similar tool to cut metal, cut off the rest of the aluminum plate. Then reinstall the now properly sized plates you made. Voila! It will be a more comfortable and flexible vans boot! Have a great skate!
Great to see this, thanks so much for posting. So how did you end up changing the long screws that went through the heel of the impalas? I can see you got some shorter screws, but not sure how you changed them to fit in the small plate that goes inside the shoe?
Super interesting ! I am planing to do that when my Impalas will be dead...lol Can I ask: Is the aluminium insole mandatory ? What happen if you don't add it to the shoe ?
The shoe soles are flexible so there’s a chance you can clip the wheel on the bottom of the shoe if you lean into a turn too deeply, which is a good way to trip and fall. I’d be too nervous to turn without the insoles!
Whew, glad the exacto knife incident wasnt worse than it was. I appreciate your realness with this video, I unfortunately learn the hard way a lot too 😅
omgsh, definitely always look up which type of drill bit you should be using (as in, per material as well // wood vs aluminum and such haha) and maybe secure the aluminum with a clamp before attempting 😂💗 these are so cute, I think I'm going to attempt this when it's time for new skates!
Love this video Linda! I'm currently trying to edit my own video on making my current vans setup 📹 A tip for anyone having trouble with the metal insoles sliding in or out is sanding down the edges a bit so they don't grab the inside of the shoe as much 😃 Edit: I hadn't finished watching the video yet and saw you grounded it down 😅 go you!
I saw at the end of this video that you ground down the edges of those plates. Although that might have solved the fitting in the vans it will still be too stiff to really enjoy your vans skates. So, if you have a little more energy left, please take them out and have them cut to match the shapes of the original front and rear plates. Then reinstall. Trust me. You'll be glad you did! Have a nice day!
Do you absolutely need the aluminum insole? I've been watching other videos and have only seen it in this one. Great job on everything you've done so far.
Hey I’m a size 7.5 women’s. I found a pair of vintage womens size 5 skates and want to do this do you think that attaching those to a 7.5 size shoe wouldn’t work?? Thanks!! I haven’t skated in years but what to start up again :)
Other than you hurting yourself...... the video was a bit funny and very entertaining, but I give great praise to anyone trying and doing things on their own. Figuring it out and making mistakes to accomplish a goal is the greatest reward and feeling ever. You definitely get an A++++++ from me :)
Have you considered getting proffesional skates? Like Risport or Edea boots with Roll-line plates. They will give you muuuuch more ankle support and stability, also good skates are making learing easier:) I can help you with choosing everything
I am not laughing at your struggles because a) I wouldn't even have the courage to try this b) if I did have the courage, I would give up pretty fast. They look great!
Hey Linda, are you going to wear the Impala boots with a cute outfit. I totally would. I'm looking forward for your review of the new Impala fashion re-boot 😁
Linda, I read that if you're making custom skates, the shoes should be half-size or a size bigger. Is your pair your size or bigger? (I also have Impala skates and I wanna turn them into custom skates, that's why I'm asking).
Ohh yes this is something I forgot to mention! I am a size 9 for Impala skate, and I ordered a size 9.5 in women’s for vans! (Size 8 in men) Thank you for asking this!!!
Probably the smaller plates will put more pressure on smaller parts of your foot so they will rub your feet and cause blisters; the soles of the shoes will also damage more easily as the screw holes will tear at the rubber of the sole.
Not a criticism - you did great drilling the metal, but if you're doing this again I highly recommend getting a centre-punch. This is a piece of steel a bit like a small chisel but with a single pointed end. You put the point where you want to drill your hole, perpendicular (90 degrees) to the surface, and then hit the blunt end with a hammer. This will make a tiny depression exactly where you want your hole, so that the drill bit won't skate all over the smooth surface of the metal & end up in the wrong place. The point of the drill will engage with the centre-punch mark & be held in place while it makes its hole.
Ma'am, who is this "lot of you" that are supposedly, allegedly "laughing at your struggles". We're all idiots out here, none of us are laughing at you. You're doing great.
So you bought power tools as an additional cost? That power sander isn't a couple of bucks. Yeah if perhaps if you buy your own custom parts and pay a skate shop for the assembly that $ave$ you the grind. Glad you still have 10 fingers.
FYI for anyone with screws that are too long: borrow a heavy duty pair of bolt cutters or nippers. A good grinder and vice grip can also do the trick, just wear safety glasses.
Can we get a thumbs up on this video for me not losing either of my actual thumbs?! 😂 🤍
Left👍 & right👍. 👏
you did a great job!!

This comment made me smile, thank you so much for sharing this perspective 🥺💖
@@cheunglindaa thank you!
You are so brave for doing this yourself!!! I love how you troubleshooted everything and didn’t give up!! 💪💛
There is an amazing skate shopnin the city of Paramount, Ca that does custom skates. They are a black owned business too. Really freaking cool.

I got my skates in TODAYYYYY. Same ones as you! Love your vids ❤️❤️❤️

Absolutely! For now I’ve only used them indoors but when they do start to wear down I will for sure give an update 😊

I got rid of the longer screws that were attached to the small piece entirely and just put the screws through the new aluminum insole and shoe :)
Also, for future reference, there are bolt cutters that will easily break off the excess screw length.
Super interesting ! I am planing to do that when my Impalas will be dead...lol Can I ask: Is the aluminium insole mandatory ? What happen if you don't add it to the shoe ?
The insole is for some extra stability and also to make sure the screws are secure as well! I’ve also seen it done without the aluminum insole 😊
I appreciate your realness with this video, I unfortunately learn the hard way a lot too 😅
Just the idea of this video is exciting. I hope things turn out well. Edit: Yep! This was great!!! Nicely done. 👍🏾
They’re so cool!
haha cool! The skates look great! I'm sure it'll take time!
This is soooo cool and helpful! 😻💖
For future reference, when drilling an alloy, use a lubricant. Metal on metal, just like your bearings, breaks down and weakens with heat.
Omg it looks so good! Thank you for putting up the effort to do this I can’t even cut a straight line. 😹

the aluminum insole stabilizes the soles of the vans which have a very flexible sole that easily bends. this is not very ideal for roller skates
Love your video!❤️

How did you remove the plate because under the shoe insert is a black layer thats impossible to move.

I worry that if the width of the aluminum plate is too big, it might eventually rip the side of your shoes.
What size shoe are you and what size aluminum sole did you purchase? For reference!

What happens if I do it without an aluminum plate?
Probably the smaller plates will put more pressure on smaller parts of your foot so they will rub your feet and cause blisters; the soles of the shoes will also damage more easily as the screw holes will tear at the rubber of the sole.
Any idea what the thickness was of the soles?
Do you have to use vans or any type of shoe?
Not a criticism - you did great drilling the metal, but if you're doing this again I highly recommend getting a centre-punch.
