  • Dr. Adam Grant and Dr. Andrew Huberman discuss the concept of intrinsic motivation and how nurturing it can impact overall performance, touching on issues such as self-deception, reward systems, the nature of curiosity, and the development of a sense of purpose as a way to foster motivation when the task at hand is perceived as uninteresting.
    Dr. Adam Grant is a professor of organizational psychology at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, an expert in the science and practical steps for increasing motivation, maximizing and reaching our potential, and understanding how individuals and groups can best flourish. Dr. Andrew Huberman is a tenured professor of neurobiology and ophthalmology at Stanford University School of Medicine and host of the Huberman Lab podcast.

    "Intrinsic motivation is often driven by curiosity about the how. A sense of purpose comes from really thinking hard about the why."

    Summary/Takeaways:
    The conversation delves into the intricacies of motivation, particularly intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, as well as their impact on performance. It begins with a reflection on the Huberman university experience, highlighting the strategy of convincing oneself to be interested in uninteresting topics, leading to a genuine curiosity and love for certain subjects.
    They discuss the importance of intrinsic motivation and its relationship with performance, mentioning research on rewarding kids for tasks they were already interested in. The conversation explores the nuances of intrinsic motivation versus extrinsic rewards, noting that while extrinsic rewards can boost productivity, they may also undermine intrinsic motivation. They suggest that finding a sense of purpose in tasks can help motivate individuals, even when intrinsic motivation is lacking.
    They also discuss the importance of autonomy and framing rewards as symbols of appreciation rather than controlling mechanisms. The conversation concludes by highlighting the benefits of intrinsic motivation, such as improved focus, persistence, and creativity.

      I agree. Who cares if he's a sociopath who lied to a bunch of women about being exclusive, gave them STDs, made one do IVF, lied about having a lab at Stanford, etc. Even if he killed or raped a few people, it wouldn't matter at all as long as he makes informative videos! It's not like there are any other people sharing the same useful info on the internet, and it's not like most studies are freely available to read for anyone who wants to.

      Purpose and meaning comes from within i.e. intrinsic, extrinsic rewards are material goods or services coming from outside.

    • @spine_skull
      @spine_skull 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Kuk0sanhow so? let's say i want to generate motivation to go to the gym.
      the biggest "why" is to get jacked
      isn't that an extrinsic reward of some sort?
      same can be said for studying hard.
      let's say the "why" is to graduate with honors. it's what gives studying hard meaning but it's kind of the same with extrinsic? or is it not

    • @Kuk0san
      @Kuk0san 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@spine_skull Yes getting 'jacked' would serve the purpose of seeking external validation - this is extrinsic reward. Going to the gym to develop functional physique, good health and longevity is an intrinsic reward. The good physique just so also happens to attract attention but you're not focusing on that part.
      As for studying - what do you hope to get with the 'honors'? Is it because you think you should make your parents proud? Or impress some people with your degree? That's still seeking external validation. If you study a subject that you find curious by itself, that's an intrinsic reward. And in that case you won't even need or care about 'honors' because you can even study what you're curious about through the vast internet for free! You can still get 'honors' if you want even if you're just studying for curiosity but again it won't be the main thing you're focusing on.

    • @spine_skull
      @spine_skull 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Kuk0san yea since the vid said that extrinsic is not a good way to motivate oneself. and one should use 2 ways to get motivation
      1. intrinsically by getting curious about the "how"
      or
      2. through meaning and purpose which is thinking hard about the "why"
      so you're saying intrinsic is the same with meaning/purpose, but the vid said it's 2 different things.
      and im curious about how does extrinsic motivation differ from meaning/purpose
