If you are Virtual, best way is to: a) make a clone b) upgrade on clone c) try installed apps, features and roles. It works? Make it on Production machine or rename clone. New version upgrade? Start on step a) Also going from 2012r2 to 2022 is to risky, would recommend going to 2019 then 2022 (always doing suggested approach)
Thanks for the comment Joe! I would only upgrade from 2k8 to a newer OS if it is a necessary thing to do....clean installations are always best in my opinion.
Would I need to buy two licenses? A 2012 and then a 2022 license?

First you need the license for the Software/O.S. you are USING. When performing an UPGRADE you need the base license. E.g. After the upgrade process, you are Running Win2022? Then you need a Win2008r2 License and a Win2022 upgrade license. (even though you had installed 2012/2016/2019/2022)
I got this error , please help : Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard cannot be upgraded to Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard (Server with a GUI). You can choose to install a new copy of Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard (Server with a GUI) instead, but this is different from an upgrade, and does not keep your files, settings, and programs. You’ll need to reinstall any programs using the original installation discs or files. To save your files before installing Windows, back them up to an external location such as a CD, DVD, or external hard drive. To install a new copy of Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard (Server with a GUI), click the Back button in the upper left-hand corner, and select “Custom (advanced)”.
Same here. I can't do this with any version - there must be a bug in the installer or some update to 2008R2 is messing with it. Clearly, from the message, this error makes zero sense. I ran into this a while back, but it looks like all available upgrade paths from 2008R2 to anything else will fail.

@@davestorm6718 you need to guarantee that you have Windows 2008R2 not Windows 2008, and also the Win2008R2 *MUST* be fully updated before trying to Migrate to 2012R2
@ Well that didn't work for us (all 2008R2 servers were updated continually since they were put into service). It could be due to zero-day patches, but, uninstalling updates before migration is always a terrible idea from a security perspective. (all were GUI standard versions and migrating to GUI standard versions fail with the same error msg as this user says)
thank you for the video, I really have no where to turn I have searched and searched but no one can give me a straight answer, is it possible to simply upgrade in place from 2008 R2 Certificate Authority to 2019 CA on the same box? please and thank you

good advise👍🏻
Great tip
is this a bad idea because I think they got rid of some of the roles between 2008 and 2022. What would happen if those roles were active on 2008.

isn't that just a role in Windows? If so, doesn't that just get upgraded as part of the upgrade process?
it does same from 2019 version too cant upgrade .. "keep files" greyed out :-(
YA I have that problem as well
Ditto. BTW, WTFlip is going from 2008 to 2022. Everybody is going from 2019 to 2022!!
Which ISO you are using? Note:- you cannot use Evaluation versions to perform this task. You must use a Retail version with a product key ready.
