    Man, I miss old skool White Wolf. Those guys had no fear, and would tag anyone. The OWOD books were full of little nods, jabs, and winks at the industry, pop culture, themselves, the fans, everyone. They get glossed over as goth-heavy emo melodrama, but they were actually very broad in tone within the horror genre, and could ke blisteringly self-aware.

    • @TheMapleTable

      im sad the goth edge has been lost.

    Ironically, 90% of a companies profits is actually more sustainable than 25% of gross revenue - because profits are always money after you've paid all your expenses, so technically you'd be able to keep the company running. With 25% of gross revenue, that's taking a quarter of all the money that comes in - before expenses, before paying salaries, before taxes even. So if I had to pick one I'd pick the 90% profits, because at least then I'd be able to say 'well my profit this year was only X, so here's 90% of X' instead of having to fork over a quarter of my gross revenue. Even in their melodramatic prediction they couldn't be as evil as modern day WotC - how funny. Sad? idk.

      @TheMapleTable  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Your very right

    • @priestesslucy
      @priestesslucy ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Technically it's before taxes in the safe way, where it's an expense that can't be taxed.
      Still an evil decision in an industry with such tight margins

      When a literal evil megacorporation bent on the corruption and eventual consumption of the world is KINDER than your actual real-life company's actions, something is deeply wrong.

      Yes they try to make people sell at a loss so they either dont publish at all or publish, realize they are losing money, back out and then wizard can sell their intellectual property forever without paying them a cent. If you are even more cynical about it they probably want to push out cheaper creators that can sell a whole campaign book for half the price of their own books and then hike up their own prices even further.

    Additionally, Ryan Dancy (main force for the OGL) and Lisa Stevens (Paizo's owner) both did work on the World of Darkness.

    • @rwulf
      @rwulf ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I gotta tell ya the weirdest thing to come out of this OGL fiasco is the D&D community somehow seeing Ryan Dancey as a good guy and a voice of reason. Dude was kind of washed out of the RPG industry in disgrace a few years back for assorted shady shit and the only thing stopping him from doing exactly what Hasbro just tried to do with the OGL was a lack of competence.

    I played Vampire, Werewolf, Changeling, and Mage back in college. I LOVED Mage and Changeling, but was pretty “meh” about Vampire and Werewolf.
    With Mage and Changeling I felt like I could really let my imagination run wild. Vampire and Werewolf were okay, but Mage and Changeling were special.

    Also the Syndicate cut most ties with Pentex with the SPD which is still being run but without ties from Syndicate, seems that Syndicate tried to investigate but the investigator all ended up dead. and Syndicate runs a double bluff operation in order to hide its ties with Pentex to the rest of the technocracy and strangely Syndicate still receives its dividends from Pentex. 6:17 - Wizards of the Coast bought TSR in 1997, and was itself bought by Hasbro in 1999. As a corporation, Hasbro is focused on increasing shareholder value. Customers, products, and employees are all just means to that end. It's not exactly prescient to guess that corporate capitalism will eventually ruin everything.

    Pentex is more like a holding management company for all these companies under its umbrella , and the companies under their umbrella most probably are even rivals to each other. While the garou or some other supernatural can bring down a major company , it does not really hurt the company as a whole since its only a holding company though it hurts the profits, to really hurt the company you have to kaput their board of directors which the garou has done(and the directors actually assasinate and scheme against each other). Pentex is the most organized and the most powerful of the Wyrms minions. Everyone else factionalized and chaotic, like the Black Spiral Dancers, powerful yes but anarchic chaotic disorganized no single leader leading the clan and the members kill each other on a whim.

    According to copyright law, the "process" cannot be copyrighted.
    In 1979m Gary Gygax explained the DMG and D&D as a "foundation and inspiration." As the foundation can't be copyrighted and the inspiration is your own intellectual property I don't understand why they're making a grab now. Further, software developers already know the answer to this battle.

    White Wolf does such a good job of lore building and find sensible ways of making different lore or the same creature fit into the same setting. Honestly I'd pay just to have a look at the research and source materials they use. I was introduced to D&D and WoD around the same time and I believe WoD to be by far the superior RPGTT system. Actually I don't know how people can stand playing the D&D system...

      @@TheMapleTable I agree. The d10 pool system is really good. I ran a Exalted vs. The World of Darkness campaign a couple years back, after we got the coding down for our VTT it ran really smooth. My only real gripe about it is that there isn't enough room for growth on a character over a long campaign on the mechanical side, which was what my group enjoyed more - that is, long, sweeping narratives. That and making interesting monsters that do interesting things from a mechanical standpoint is kind of hard.

      @@TheMapleTable There are worse scenarios.
      But the more pressing issue at hand is that parody and satire essentially REQUIRE the ability to recognize absurdity; and that such an outcome, while plausible, is usually not difficult to avoid. SciFi dystopias being another example, and usually taken more seriously due to its dower outlook, usually comments on a systemic break down of social order, where society falls victim to either extremes of animistic behavior, or fascist control.... and occasionally the mix of the two with fanatical worship of a concept (sometimes made manifest).
      Right now our world is living in the cartoon villainy end of the absurdity spectrum. IE the one where even kids can recognize a lack of human decency and respect for rules when presented....
      Yet grown humans with presumably enough intelligence to be able to understand the mechanical benefits to society as a whole, access to written history showing this, AND arguably had benefited directly from its economic peak within their life times (~1990s-2010s depending on where you live in the world), are somehow unable to selfishly perpetuate the system that benefits many, in order to cannibalize it for larger short term gains.
      But what really takes the cake? You'd practically have to out of your way to screw up as badly as a lot of these Entertainment companies are. Whats probably more ironic is most of the ones that are coming from the tech circles into other industires..... IE the demographics where both the customer and workforce would be more closely associated and familiar with Science Fiction and its adjacent stories. You'd expect it from older Post war Industrial era companies, since those were the nexus of where a lot of the commentary was aim at.
      The phrase "Blood from a stone" comes to mind. Plus "Cycle V" if you're even older.

    Something good happened and I am happy for you all. However a dragon doesn't change its heart only its plans. The parent company and the company that offered 5E on a silver platter do so purely because its a loss they CAN afford. There is no winning. Only a perpetual fight to keep and guard our imagination, our money, our hearts and our perspective. Nothing lasts forever but dragons live a for a very long time. Hopefully slaying THIS dragon by moving to other game systems and taking our money with us will not only embolden the next generation of TTRPGers but serve as an example ringing throughout EVERY business ethics classroom that THIS WAS NOT OK!!! WHAT THEY DID WILL NEVER BE OK! Finally I would love to see and I pray that someday the same zeal and unity I shown by in the community across the board comes together again to address other atrocities in the world. Fight the dragon and NEVER become one!

    Not a bad vid overall, but I have to point out a problem. At timestamp ~6:15 the timeframe of events is messed up. "Early 2000s" TSR was gone. WotC bought them out in 1997. This tends to dilute your credibility for everything else in the vid. Please do better research. Ty.

    This isn't a prediction. Like I'm sorry to say But this is click bait.
    The fact that the OGL would be revoked is not exactly a prediction it was just a matter of time. Especially with has bro. Look at what they did to Magic the Gathering in just the past 10 years. I'm sorry but this was not a prediction

      It was predictable to those paying attention but most regular people never saw it coming.

    I would not call it a prediction when it clearly is more of a coincidence. But what baffles me more that you call the storyteller system narrative, when I see nothing that would justify that. The closest WoD games come to anything narrative related is when they talk about theme in the books, but not only is that usually completely ignored my the majority of people using these game,it ha absolutely no impact on game mechanisms.
