It's great when a Beatles fan gets to visit Abbey Road studios. I'll never forget my visit there in July 1983 when it was opened to the public for the very first time. They decided to open the studio and also give a 90 minute audio/video presentation of never before heard Beatles material. They were remodeling and upgraded the studio 2 control room for about 2 months so they thought why not sell tickets for a tour and presentation while the room is not in use. They used those famous Altec 605A/612 grey monitors for the sound. I'll never forget hearing actual Beatles live takes at full volume in that room where they happened from the monitors they used.
That must have been an incredible experience for a Beatles fan! In the 1990s, a guy I know played me a recording of his band using professional (to me) equipment in his basement. If I had my eyes closed, I'd swear the band was in the room. With that in mind, I can picture what your experience must have been like.

It was the closest one could ever get to a Beatles live experience when the third track played was take 1 of I Saw Her Standing There with the studio chatter prior to the start from the marathon session on Feb.11 1963. It leaped out of the monitors and filled the darkened room as if they were right there. All the material played would appear on legendary bootlegs and then eventually on the Anthology discs later in the 90s.
@nedhoey, do you perchance have any photos from that 1983 tour that you could share? I missed it by about a month. I actually somehow found a discarded ticket on the sidewalk when I WAS there shortly afterward and saved it!
Yes that was an unforgettable experience. I went in Aug 1983 and a day I will always remember mainly for hearing A Day In The Life at such volume with the accompanying film.

The Engineering people that were part of Musical History are a wealth of knowledge. Sadly, many are no longer with us. That is why these interviews are so important.
Fabulous interesting episode, I have walked across the Abbey Road crossing (which Beatles fan hasn't) but never been inside the studio. I love that they have some of the old gear and put a high value on preservation of the vintage gear onsite while being a cutting edge recording studio but understands the importance of the legacy of the music made there. I am so pleased some of these very important people gave their time to be interviewed so we learn more. There has always been debates about what should be released and what is interesting to us Beatles fans so the admission of the strummed version of Julia that made it onto the bonus disc revealed by Matthew is testament that there is still so much to learn and so much fascinating material still to hear. Get Back will be studied for years to come, a staggering achievement. Only Zappa's Roxy - The Movie comes close to technology rescuing something that was almost lost.
Like so many others, I grew up with the Beatles and when I DJed in the 1980s, the CD releases were something I snapped up on release. I also picked up the Complete Beatles Recording Sessions and learned that book inside out. I thought in doing so, I'd understood everything as far as their recorded output but of course, I should have realised that even from the Beatles they would mirror what I did too. When you're recording and there's urgency you don't tend to care about cataloguing or following procedure exactly. You go for what's at hand. So later when the Anthologies came out, I was a bit surprised to find more "lost" stuff on the tapes that had supposedly already been gone through. And yet again we are still finding stuff today. I'm no longer surprised of course as I now realise how these things happen, but it shows the importance of making sure.
Directly behind Abbey Road Studios there was a pub called "The Heroes of Alma." It's no longer there but back in the 90's I happened in to find Beatles memorabilia galore. According the one of the locals the Fab Four used to come in for a pint or two whenever they were recording.
Wow Andrew. You are really living the dream. That was absolutely fascinating. I paused multiple times to study details. I hope this channel is lucrative for you; but no money can be compared with the experiences you’re getting to have. Getting the Harry Moss photos is just icing on the cake: you’ve been in the rooms where the audio magic happened and talked with the people actively engaged in preserving it. Congratulations!

Fascinating visit to the iconic studios, Andrew. I was there in 1978 when my mum and brother worked behind the bar. I seem to recall it was in the basement. The late Denny Laine and Linda McCartney were regulars. Paul McCartney only recorded in the dead of night- which he is renowned for. I do recall seeing The Hollies recording and saw the album sleeves for Kate Bush's 'The Kick Inside' and Marshall Hain's 'Free Ride' displayed in the hall. Fond memories.
Andrew, something that has been puzzling me about Abbey Road is why the Beatles had to go to the film studio for Let It Be and work at the film studio hours. The Beatles were well known for starting work late and working into the small hours. If a film was being made about a modern recording artist, the film crew would have to work when and where the recording artist wanted. The Beatles were the biggest recording artist in the world, so why were they made to go to the film studio? Also, taking them out of their place where they created their songs means the film wouldn’t portray them accurately. It’s like David Attenborough filming a wildlife series in a zoo instead of the animals natural environment. Maybe you can cover this in a future video about Let It Be please.
That interview was lovely! Mr. Cook gave me the same sense of having been gutted when facing all that oxide falling away from his precious tapes! The sense of great reward that can arise from great patience when he played tapes all the way to their ends to find the treasures on them brought his elation to me. I'm so glad you could finally put the face to the name of one of your favourite mastering heroes, too. Though it MUST end, this tour of Abbey Road, I don't want it to... One of my favourite "end of the tape" discoveries was that demo of John singing I'm In Love (recorded by the Fourmost & Billy J. Kramer) that was part of that iTunes/Apple Music release Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963 collection. I wonder if that was also Matthew's doing?
What a treat for you, Andrew. Really the one place that really is the top of Beatle sites to visit. I know the pain of SSS. All my multitrack tapes were Ampex 456 Grand Master from 88-89. All are now unplayable.
The tape eraser video is haunting. Probably some lost Doctor Who episode on that tape. This (archivist, NOT tape eraser) would be an incredible job. The theme of this Abbey Road interview series is apparently my dream jobs, haha. Very glad to hear the Emitape is holding up!
I used to work at a TV studio and the bulk eraser there was a conveyor belt type. We used to drop 20 video tapes or more on it at a time and catch them out the other side. It always scared me, you didn't get a second chance!!
Even though they reused the 2-inch videotape that Doctor Who was recorded on, nearly all of the episodes survived as film copies up until 1972 for use in overseas screenings. After that point, they started to get junked as overseas sales dried up for the 60s B&W episodes. It’s sad to realize what could have been saved if archival efforts started a few years earlier. Having said that, they were about to destroy a large batch of episodes in 1978 (including the first Dalek story) when smarter heads intervened. Depending on who you talk to, those episodes were only a day or two away from destruction.
Another fascinating interview. Your time at Abbey Road was well spent. Mr. Cocker, I think, misspeaks at one point (at about 13:20) when he tells us the most difficult project he worked on was the multi-track recordings from Twickenham. If I'm not mistaken, there are no multi-track recordings Twickenham, only the Nagra recordings made by the film crew. During their time at Twickenham they were not recording an album, only rehearsing and working up new songs for the potential live show, so no multi-track recording machines were needed. After George was convinced to return to the fold, they reconvened at the Apple studio in the basement of 3 Saville Rd. Note that the dates of the EMITAPE boxes you show are all dated from the latter part of January, when they were recording at Apple on multi-track tape.
Would love to go there. I did meet Richard Lush assistant engineer on Sgt Peppers at an album launch party. Was a very interesting chat. Nice guy to understate. As a beatles fan I can't get enough of this content. Seeing inside Studio 301 Sydney was great but this is the holy grail. The Beatles revolutionised modern music in a massive way. In hundreds of years people will still know of them and fathom their influence. The Beatles and other legacy artists are saving the record industry selling a plethora of remixes and remasters and box sets. If I had unlimited money I would want the master tape versions of all the beatles albums. These I know would be at least 5 removed from the real masters no one sees. Slave or safety master from very original then the production masters etc etc so even at big bucks these tapes if they were to exist are a little lossy. Then there is your machine lol and storage. So many factors.
Great interview Andrew! Last year in early May I found out about “Step Inside Abbey Road”. An open house and tour of studio 2. I immediately bought tickets for August 12th 2023. Then I told my wife that we going to London on vacation…..and oh yeah we will be stopping by Abbey Road for a visit! I live in the Chicago USA area. We had to get new passports. I could not pass up the opportunity to be in that space, to feel it, hear it and as you pointed out smell it. The top on the list of things I must do before I die. We had week in London, with a day trip to Liverpool. Absolutely amazing to be in the Cavern Club and Abbey Road, two places where the seeds of the world shaking history were planted and nurtured. @@michaelharrington75 somewhere I have seen a documentary on the subject. Like you, I believe it was in part destroyed and filled in and then dug out again and recreated. Maybe Andrew @Parlogram could do an update?
@@evanstair1262 I don't believe they were able to salvage anything. The structure was too damaged during the original demolition. Some of the archway bricks were sold when they dug it back up. The new Cavern is built close to the same spot, but not in the exact layout, and the entrance way is up the street a few doors from the old one. It's really a shame they were allowed to tear such a historic place down.
@@michaelharrington75 If I'm not mistaken I remember hearing a long time ago that the original Cavern was filled in and became a parking lot. Desecrasion! That place deserved to be preserved and cherished as the place that gave the world The Beatles.
Fascinating subject and great video! When I was a kid in the sixties/seventies I loved top forty radio and thought the three minute pop song was the pinnacle of creative expression. Thank Yggdrasil for archivists like Matthew who preserve this priceless audio treasure for us all. Now popular music has become monetized by private equity, well beyond the idea of recording artist contracts and record sales, buying up music rights for profits to reap for generations to come.

Matthew Cocker is so good at his craft and I love listening to him explain all those things so important to saving the sonic past. And he has a groovy way of talking, also! I like to listen to him just talk. Plus, I will sometimes listen to him at 0.75x speed just to hear him sound "normal speed." But I'm very impressed by fast talkers! It shows intelligence. I'm very quick to notice someone talking fast. I wish I could talk fast, but I simply cannot. That's just something I notice. Love this channel!!
I love that old tape has been being archived to digital over the last decade or so, it is how so many amazing multitrack classics have been leaked to normal people including loads of Beatles stuff. The whole Abbey Road medley being the jewel in the Beatles crown. All 24 tracks of Bohemian Rhapsody is probably the best thing to come out of it.

Impressive. Reminds the analogue purists how delicate and fragile a medium tape is and the pains of dealing with it. Furthermore, you have to really know what you're doing to make it sound good. Makes me appreciate the work of mastering engineers like Miles even more.

I attended the John Otway recording of House of the Rising Sun (along with 3000 others over 3 sessions) in Studio 2 for the b-side of the second hit, Bunsen Burner! A tremendous and awe inspiring experience.
Amazing video! There was a time in the early 2000s when EMI was about to sell the studios or to open them up to the public a little more and make some money that way. I'm glad they decided for the latter.
Another great episode Andrew! It’s great to put the faces to the lesser known, yet hugely important folks who help in producing “the finished piece”…then keeping it around for generations to come. These episodes with the technical portrait in play mean a lot. Archiving is the backbone of history. Especially so in pop culture as it’s a fleeting moment in time. Wonderful interview again!

That said, I only got to glimpse the outside of the building. You put me inside the building as if I were there, and for that, I thank you again!
This is one of the best interviews that you did Andrew I love that the people at Abbey Road are still preserving not only the master tapes of the Beatles another artist but also the equipment I think all the master tapes of the greatest recording should be preserved as well as all of the vintage equipment which is fantastic. The work that the engineers do at Abbey Road are really amazing I love it.
Very interesting content, always, esp. when it concerns my fav Beatles! I love seeing inside of ARS, all the machines, recorders, tapes, etc. that the Beatles used to make their iconic music! Great info & interesting to watch. 👍
I’ve been inside Abbey Road, studio two, control room and echo chamber several times listening to talks by Brian Kehew and Kevin Ryan which come highly recommended. I also own one of just 210 studio two bricks that were for sale a few years ago after a small studio refurbishment. I was lucky enough to buy the actual brick (number 38 of 210) that was used as the photography and display sample together with the display stand which they gave and posted to me for free. It’s my most treasured possession knowing it soaked up all the sounds from opening day to the present day.
Thanks so much for this video Andrew, seeing the inside of Studio two really brought back memories of being in there in the summer of '83, and yes I can confer with Paul, there was a distinctive smell about the place. Also the room itself reminded me of our school hall where we had our assemblies each morning even, the chairs were very similar. And thank you for sharing that photo of Harry Moss, like you say so nice to put a face to the name that is etched on so many of my favourite albums. A Treasure of a Presentation! During April of 2014, My Daughter, Deborah, was doing a Semester in...London! I was able to take a few Vacation Days and I went to visit her. On April 18, 2014, we took a bus to an area called St. John's Wood in search of a Certain FAMOUS Recording Studio...

Amazing video as usual, Andrew. I learnt a couple of things for my work. I'm transferring to digital a lot of tapes from the Uruguayan public radio ranging from 1950-1990. Lots of tapes for 'baking' but, fortunately, lots that didn't need that. We also have lots of BBC Transcription Service tapes, but unfortunately nothing from the Beatles, just classical music. Again, Andrew, great work and thanks for this.
What a privilege to be able to go inside the gates and walls and see where much of the Beatles magic happened. So many fans, including myself, would love to see Studio 2 in person. I've had the opportunity to visit other historical studios. I've been to Sun Records in Memphis and Motown's Hitsville USA Studios in Detroit. Both were incredible, memorable, experiences. Hopefully, one day, fans will be able to actually see this hallowed ground as part of a formal tour. I understand it is still a working studio but I'm sure sensible arrangements could be made so as to allow for limited public tours.
I'm not a technical person, but I thoroughly enjoyed this interview with Mr. Cocker and grateful that EMI is preserving its treasures. I'm going to have to dig out my White Album box set and listen to "Julia." Thank you for the studio tour. I'm looking forward to next week's video.

Great stuff. Once i walked into studio 3 when they were remixing Sgt Pepper for the box. Immediately Lovely Rita ended abruptly but I was able to glance at Pepper's master tapes stacked on the mixing console, pretty cool.

Along with the tomorrow never knows early mix from the revolver super deluxe box set I not only want to thank you Matthew but all of the engineers and all of the people at Abbey Road he’ll do a great job at preserving beetle stuff along with other stuff at that wonderful studio.
This was wonderful. It is nice to see the real studio two and how much it really has not changed. Loved seeing the Fairchild 660, the puktecs, and the 1176 limiter for real and the ones that the Engineers used on Beatles albums. And now I have a face to go with the name Harry Moss.

So later when the Anthologies came out, I was a bit surprised to find more "lost" stuff on the tapes that had supposedly already been gone through. And yet again we are still finding stuff today. I'm no longer surprised of course as I now realise how these things happen, but it shows the importance of making sure.
One of the finest documentaries on Abbey Road I've seen on TH-cam, and I'm sure that's all thanks to them granting you the opportunity! Superb

Directly behind Abbey Road Studios there was a pub called "The Heroes of Alma." It's no longer there but back in the 90's I happened in to find Beatles memorabilia galore. According the one of the locals the Fab Four used to come in for a pint or two whenever they were recording.

Fascinating visit to the iconic studios, Andrew. I was there in 1978 when my mum and brother worked behind the bar. I seem to recall it was in the basement. The late Denny Laine and Linda McCartney were regulars. Paul McCartney only recorded in the dead of night- which he is renowned for. I do recall seeing The Hollies recording and saw the album sleeves for Kate Bush's 'The Kick Inside' and Marshall Hain's 'Free Ride' displayed in the hall. Fond memories.

Andrew, something that has been puzzling me about Abbey Road is why the Beatles had to go to the film studio for Let It Be and work at the film studio hours. The Beatles were well known for starting work late and working into the small hours. If a film was being made about a modern recording artist, the film crew would have to work when and where the recording artist wanted. The Beatles were the biggest recording artist in the world, so why were they made to go to the film studio? Also, taking them out of their place where they created their songs means the film wouldn’t portray them accurately. It’s like David Attenborough filming a wildlife series in a zoo instead of the animals natural environment. Maybe you can cover this in a future video about Let It Be please.

That interview was lovely! Mr. Cook gave me the same sense of having been gutted when facing all that oxide falling away from his precious tapes! The sense of great reward that can arise from great patience when he played tapes all the way to their ends to find the treasures on them brought his elation to me.

One of my favourite "end of the tape" discoveries was that demo of John singing I'm In Love (recorded by the Fourmost & Billy J. Kramer) that was part of that iTunes/Apple Music release Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963 collection. I wonder if that was also Matthew's doing?
What a treat for you, Andrew. Really the one place that really is the top of Beatle sites to visit. I know the pain of SSS. All my multitrack tapes were Ampex 456 Grand Master from 88-89. All are now unplayable.
The tape eraser video is haunting. Probably some lost Doctor Who episode on that tape.
This (archivist, NOT tape eraser) would be an incredible job. The theme of this Abbey Road interview series is apparently my dream jobs, haha.

I used to work at a TV studio and the bulk eraser there was a conveyor belt type. We used to drop 20 video tapes or more on it at a time and catch them out the other side. It always scared me, you didn't get a second chance!!
Even though they reused the 2-inch videotape that Doctor Who was recorded on, nearly all of the episodes survived as film copies up until 1972 for use in overseas screenings. After that point, they started to get junked as overseas sales dried up for the 60s B&W episodes. It’s sad to realize what could have been saved if archival efforts started a few years earlier. Having said that, they were about to destroy a large batch of episodes in 1978 (including the first Dalek story) when smarter heads intervened. Depending on who you talk to, those episodes were only a day or two away from destruction.

Another fascinating interview. Your time at Abbey Road was well spent.
Mr. Cocker, I think, misspeaks at one point (at about 13:20) when he tells us the most difficult project he worked on was the multi-track recordings from Twickenham. If I'm not mistaken, there are no multi-track recordings Twickenham, only the Nagra recordings made by the film crew. During their time at Twickenham they were not recording an album, only rehearsing and working up new songs for the potential live show, so no multi-track recording machines were needed. After George was convinced to return to the fold, they reconvened at the Apple studio in the basement of 3 Saville Rd. Note that the dates of the EMITAPE boxes you show are all dated from the latter part of January, when they were recording at Apple on multi-track tape.
Yeah he prob meant syncing up the nagra stuff to what was on film.
Would love to go there. I did meet Richard Lush assistant engineer on Sgt Peppers at an album launch party. Was a very interesting chat. Nice guy to understate. As a beatles fan I can't get enough of this content. Seeing inside Studio 301 Sydney was great but this is the holy grail. The Beatles revolutionised modern music in a massive way. In hundreds of years people will still know of them and fathom their influence. The Beatles and other legacy artists are saving the record industry selling a plethora of remixes and remasters and box sets. If I had unlimited money I would want the master tape versions of all the beatles albums. These I know would be at least 5 removed from the real masters no one sees. Slave or safety master from very original then the production masters etc etc so even at big bucks these tapes if they were to exist are a little lossy. Then there is your machine lol and storage. So many factors.
Great interview Andrew! Last year in early May I found out about “Step Inside Abbey Road”. An open house and tour of studio 2. I immediately bought tickets for August 12th 2023. Then I told my wife that we going to London on vacation…..and oh yeah we will be stopping by Abbey Road for a visit! I live in the Chicago USA area. We had to get new passports. I could not pass up the opportunity to be in that space, to feel it, hear it and as you pointed out smell it. The top on the list of things I must do before I die. We had week in London, with a day trip to Liverpool. Absolutely amazing to be in the Cavern Club and Abbey Road, two places where the seeds of the world shaking history were planted and nurtured. I'm fairly sure the original Cavern club where the Beatles played was closed, and filled in to make a spot for something else back in the 70's?
@@michaelharrington75 somewhere I have seen a documentary on the subject. Like you, I believe it was in part destroyed and filled in and then dug out again and recreated. Maybe Andrew @Parlogram could do an update?
@@evanstair1262 I don't believe they were able to salvage anything. The structure was too damaged during the original demolition. Some of the archway bricks were sold when they dug it back up. The new Cavern is built close to the same spot, but not in the exact layout, and the entrance way is up the street a few doors from the old one. It's really a shame they were allowed to tear such a historic place down.

Fascinating subject and great video! When I was a kid in the sixties/seventies I loved top forty radio and thought the three minute pop song was the pinnacle of creative expression. Thank Yggdrasil for archivists like Matthew who preserve this priceless audio treasure for us all. Now popular music has become monetized by private equity, well beyond the idea of recording artist contracts and record sales, buying up music rights for profits to reap for generations to come.

Matthew Cocker is so good at his craft and I love listening to him explain all those things so important to saving the sonic past. And he has a groovy way of talking, also! I like to listen to him just talk. Plus, I will sometimes listen to him at 0.75x speed just to hear him sound "normal speed." But I'm very impressed by fast talkers! It shows intelligence. I'm very quick to notice someone talking fast. I wish I could talk fast, but I simply cannot. That's just something I notice.

I love that old tape has been being archived to digital over the last decade or so, it is how so many amazing multitrack classics have been leaked to normal people including loads of Beatles stuff. The whole Abbey Road medley being the jewel in the Beatles crown. All 24 tracks of Bohemian Rhapsody is probably the best thing to come out of it.

Impressive. Reminds the analogue purists how delicate and fragile a medium tape is and the pains of dealing with it. Furthermore, you have to really know what you're doing to make it sound good. Makes me appreciate the work of mastering engineers like Miles even more.

I attended the John Otway recording of House of the Rising Sun (along with 3000 others over 3 sessions) in Studio 2 for the b-side of the second hit, Bunsen Burner! A tremendous and awe inspiring experience.
Amazing video! There was a time in the early 2000s when EMI was about to sell the studios or to open them up to the public a little more and make some money that way. I'm glad they decided for the latter.

Great video, I am excited to think Sir Malcolm Sargent conducted in Abbey Road, one of my favourite conductors.
This is one of the best interviews that you did Andrew I love that the people at Abbey Road are still preserving not only the master tapes of the Beatles another artist but also the equipment I think all the master tapes of the greatest recording should be preserved as well as all of the vintage equipment which is fantastic. The work that the engineers do at Abbey Road are really amazing I love it.
Very interesting content, always, esp. when it concerns my fav Beatles! I love seeing inside of ARS, all the machines, recorders, tapes, etc. that the Beatles used to make their iconic music! Great info & interesting to watch. 👍
I’ve been inside Abbey Road, studio two, control room and echo chamber several times listening to talks by Brian Kehew and Kevin Ryan which come highly recommended. I also own one of just 210 studio two bricks that were for sale a few years ago after a small studio refurbishment. I was lucky enough to buy the actual brick (number 38 of 210) that was used as the photography and display sample together with the display stand which they gave and posted to me for free. It’s my most treasured possession knowing it soaked up all the sounds from opening day to the present day.

Thanks so much for this video Andrew, seeing the inside of Studio two really brought back memories of being in there in the summer of '83, and yes I can confer with Paul, there was a distinctive smell about the place. Also the room itself reminded me of our school hall where we had our assemblies each morning even, the chairs were very similar. And thank you for sharing that photo of Harry Moss, like you say so nice to put a face to the name that is etched on so many of my favourite albums. I recently purchased an old Goons show album produced by none other than George Martin, and on the run out the very famous HTM...

A Treasure of a Presentation! During April of 2014, My Daughter, Deborah, was doing a Semester in...London! I was able to take a few Vacation Days and I went to visit her. On April 18, 2014, we took a bus to an area called St. John's Wood in search of a Certain FAMOUS Recording Studio...

Amazing video as usual, Andrew. I learnt a couple of things for my work. I'm transferring to digital a lot of tapes from the Uruguayan public radio ranging from 1950-1990. Lots of tapes for 'baking' but, fortunately, lots that didn't need that. We also have lots of BBC Transcription Service tapes, but unfortunately nothing from the Beatles, just classical music. Again, Andrew, great work and thanks for this.
What a privilege to be able to go inside the gates and walls and see where much of the Beatles magic happened. So many fans, including myself, would love to see Studio 2 in person. I've had the opportunity to visit other historical studios. I've been to Sun Records in Memphis and Motown's Hitsville USA Studios in Detroit. Both were incredible, memorable, experiences. Hopefully, one day, fans will be able to actually see this hallowed ground as part of a formal tour. I understand it is still a working studio but I'm sure sensible arrangements could be made so as to allow for limited public tours.
They do hold public events once a year.

Great stuff. Once i walked into studio 3 when they were remixing Sgt Pepper for the box. Immediately Lovely Rita ended abruptly but I was able to glance at Pepper's master tapes stacked on the mixing console, pretty cool.

This was wonderful. It is nice to see the real studio two and how much it really has not changed. Loved seeing the Fairchild 660, the puktecs, and the 1176 limiter for real and the ones that the Engineers used on Beatles albums. And now I have a face to go with the name Harry Moss.
