Even though oil changes aren't rocket surgery this was fun to watch. In a few weeks I'll be doing the first change on my 87 GN since I bought it. Using dino VR1 10W-30 and a Wix filter. Thanks for the torque specs.
I believe this is the incorrect oil change procedure. After refiling with oil, you are supposed to disconnect the wire harness from the ECM module & crank engine over until oil light goes out. This pumps fresh oil into the turbo so that it doesn't spin with no oil. Reconnect wire harness to ECM & start engine & check for leaks. 31 year owner of 1986 GN.
ECM is located at rear of engine in center. Wire harness is on driver's side and is attached with 1 bolt. Remove bolt & pull wire harness away. Crank engine (filled with oil) until oil light goes out. Reattach harness & check for leaks. Does this answer your question?
After draining the oil replacing the oil drain plug and removing and replacing the turbo, unplug the yellow wire near the battery and crank the engine for five to 6 seconds the oil light will go out, don't worry the car won't start. This will pump oil into the turbo ( not doing this will burn up the turbo eventually ) full of oil needed to cool during operation. Once the turbo is primed, plug the yellow wire back in and start the engine and turn of and top off as needed with 5 quartz of oil.
I would recommend only a Napa gold 1036 filter and Valvoline VR1 oil with a bottle of ZDDP (zinc) at every oil change. I do not recommend using synthetic oil in that stock higher mileage car. Good luck with it. I'll be tuning in
Kirban performance/turbotweak are good places to get parts for these cars i would look into getting whats known as a scanmaster its a scantool that plugs into the obd port and monitors data like coolant temp knock air temp o2 voltage etc
Let’s make some 🍷 wine 😊JR in 🇨🇦
Thanks for supporting the channel!
Been using Driven HR2. Next change GP-1 10w30
Good to know! Thanks!
When he took the plug out “he had to stop yelling bang cuz it was scaring the neighbors”
Thanks for supporting the channel
Why does everyone else different oil? Some say these cars have something about a flat roller cam and they use 15-40 some use ams oil zrod
Million different ways to skin that cat. It is a flat lifter. You definitely need an oil with zinc in it or a zinc additive
@@MakeStuffNation I need to do an oil change soon what do you recommend?
Fill the filter 1/2 way with oil to avoid dry start
Its sideways😂
If you were to use a jack would the piece of the frame in front of the oil pan be a good spot?
Any part of the frame should be okay.
Always slightly under fill the oil so you can add to correct level.
Great point!

Stephan Vassale could you show the the steps with the ECM ?
My owners manual says 6 quarts with the filter.

Thanks for the suggestion. I do use Napa gold or platinum filters (depending on what they have in stock) and ZDDP.
Thanks for reminding me, I gotta do an OC on my 87 GN as well. I always use WIX filters in my 36K mile bone stock car. Nice car and shop too.
Thanks! Mine is coming up due again too.
Where is the oil pressure sending unit located on these years for an after market Guage?
I'm not sure. Sorry.
is 10w 30 ?
Yes
I put 6 quarts on mines and it’s recommended online
5 1/2 puts me in the middle of the hash marks.
yep
Thanks can't wait for coolant flush!
Editing it now. Will be posted this coming friday.
What weight oil you use

dgr_1996 thanks! I already get parts from Kirban Performance. I have a power antenna rebuild video I'm posting next week.
dgr_1996 kppl
Just bought an 87 Turbo T. What filter and what filter no. would you recommend? TIA :)
I use a NAPA Gold filter. They can look up the number for you.
What type of oil is used ?
Dude . Do yourself a favour and swap that powermaster brake booster with a vacuum booster . Check Kirban
Its a rebuilt unit in perfect condition. Still works great. Might swap it out if/when it fails.
Every turbo buick guy is yelling Zinc at there tv.
Nice car 👍
You should get a magnetic drain plug to inspect the oil
I go that extra mile and paint all my oil filters black like they used to be on these cars....
just buy a black wix
First you really don’t have to put car on ramps.
Much more comfortable that way though.
don't forget zinc oil additive there is none in today's oil ,cam and lifters Will be damaged
Grand National thanks. I just forgot to film it. Need to make an addendum.
