A turning point in the film. The only tense moment. Alice tells Phillip the truth, and then criticizes him for "scribbling in his book". One of my very favorite films. Every critique of this film makes the story and characters so complicated, and they are not. Phillip is a man in his 30s who is still playing the bachelor, and is lonely and unhappy - and doesn't understand why. Alice is a little girl who's probably been abandoned more than once, and she is very cautious. She most likely has never had a real father. She is judging Phillip as a father almost from the moment she meets him. You can almost hear her say "Papa" every time she looks at him. Alice knows what she needs, Phillip does not. They should be family, but they cannot. You can guarantee, when she is finally alone at home, she cries her eyes out. A slow, beautiful, realistic film,....but sad.
Mart Maameele Wow that is a profound comment. Wenders films influenced my concept of being as well, as ones existence is defined by time. Wenders films are more that movies, they are proof that we exist.
