The 1951 film. I love the dialogue and characters and the movie has this incredible momentum that carries you the moment the monster thaws out.

Hey Karen! Fantastic and thorough comparison of these classics. Mr. Dan is awesome btw...this was a great recommendation. That opening title credit graphic is iconic, glad you mentioned it. It's awesome that they recreated it in the 82 version. The creature was so different, yet interesting in both versions. The 82 version is my favorite, I could go on and on about it forever. LoL
Like you mentioned, Carpeneter did not bog down the story with a military presence, but I like that; leaving things open to interpretation and allowing us to just focus on the core characters.
Coming soon, The Thing from 2011? Be well & have a good one.

Hey Anthony, thank you and yes Mr. Dan is cool.. this past week has been a blast delving into these films. These kinds of movies make me feel alive! Yah I think most like the 82 film.. it’s so incredible. And yes the open interpretation concept is my kinda thing.. I’m just about to put up my Prince of Darkness review and that is a perfect example of that. I’m glad you liked it and maybe I’ll have to look at the 2011 one. Loved your The Fly comparison, so good!!

Excellent comparison Karen and thanks for the shoutout! 👍You made so many good points. Margaret Sheridan’s role is definitely representative of the stereotypical casting of the era. At least in a smaller role one of the scientists who turns out to be a medical doctor is a female. Eventually I’ll compare the original story with the extended Frozen Hell treatment that you mentioned.

Hey Mr. Dan!! Thank you! Of course, love your channel and outlook on these movies. That’s true about the female doc. Yes please, do the comparison I’ll watch that for sure! I gotta read the books.

Hey great reviews of these classics! For me, Carpenter’s film is superior, but it’s one of my favourite films of all time! The original is really good too. I like a lot of those 50’s sci fi films and The Thing from another world is definitely one of the best! Glad you appreciated it too! Great work!!👍🏻

Thanks my friend! I’m glad you like The Thing also. Oh boy I’m having such a great time exploring Carpenters older films. I’m working on Prince of Darkness next then In The Mouth of Madness. Glad you enjoyed!!

Really awesome review. I have loved both films since forever. What sets apart the two films for me is that there is nothing like Carpenter's The Thing. The effects, the suspense, the paranoia. It's unique and uniquely brilliant. The earlier version, though better than most of it's ilk, has lots of monster movies that are quite similar. A lot of which are also very enjoyable.
You just brought it to my attention that the way they kill the monster in these two movies is the same way they kill the shark in the first 2 jaws movies. Yeah, I know, and about a 1000 other films.
    Great stuff👍🏼👊🏼.

Hey Vas, missed ya man! Thank you, glad you liked it! Yes, I’m partial to Carpenters film too. Those effects are so good. Oh you’re right, same as Jaws.. haha I didn’t think of that. Nice chatting my friend!

    Great video! Very interesting idea.
I seen John Carpenter’s version first and it’s one of my favorite horror films of all time. It took me awhile to see the thing from another world but I actually really ended up enjoying the movie. I think it’s pretty underrated. I love both movies.

i have not seen the original but the thing from John C. Is amazing which everyone pretty much agrees on. Listening to your thoughts on the first one kinda gives me interest in watching the original now but ill have to put it on the never ending list.

Thanks Nick! Hey I only just saw it the other day myself. Plus I could never yell at you 😁. It’s a good classic style film. I still really like the 1982 one best. Hope you get to see it. I’m so obsessed with this series it’s been fun looking into it. I’ll be doing Prince of Darkness (which I loved) and In The Mouth of Madness (haven’t seen yet) next.

Can't say that I agree with your appraisal of Nikki Nicholson (Margaret Sheridan) in the 1951 version. Nikki was about as liberated as a woman of the late 40's could be: single, living in an exotic location, free thinking and hobnobbing with military men. Nikki engaged Captain Hendry in that philosophical conversation about "What does that Thing in the block of ice really mean?" Hendry was following orders, Carrington was studying it but Nikki had a deeper understanding about how the discovery of an alien would impact the civilized world. And lest we not forget that Nikki came up with the idea of burning the Thing to death while the rest of the men were stumped at how to defend the camp. She was also brave (or frightened) enough to keep Captain Hendry informed about Dr. Carringtons "gardening" activities. She also served as a mediator between Carrington and Hendry by trying to explain Carringtons overly analytical personality to Hendry. Carrington distantly treated Nikki as a know nothing secretary whereas Hendry treated her as an intelligent woman and trusted confidant.
Nikki was a very necessary and unique character in the film.

I must disagree with this reviewer’s opinion of Margaret Sheridan’s performance. She’s a major factor in what makes “The Thing from another World” such a watchable, entertaining movie. Her snappy dialogue with Kenneth Tobey and her brisk, capable manner while dealing with the situation are quite refreshing and amusing.
