    This past week I've been fulfilling orders from my online art shop and simultaneously working on a masterboard, to cut down into inkbox cards. In this art studio vlog I'll show you how I start a masterboard and then build all the interesting layers with vintage papers and photos, and rubber stamps with ink. I'll also share my thoughts about running an online store, and what I love about the publishing process.

    I really like this video. Collage is so relaxing and so much fun to do. I picked a random big book of good quality pages that no one wanted, and designated it my collage master board book. I’ve made it through maybe a third of the book and it’s fun to go through and see how I’ve improved. I’ve also done what will be book covers with larger images. I love to watch other people’s process, I always learn something good. Thank you for sharing.

    • @MargareteMiller

      Wow, Martha! It sounds like that random book has turned out to be a gold mine! It's great that you're creating so many things using the material from that book ❤️.

    Ink box cards are new to me. And I’ve never thought of putting currency in my collages. I can always count on you to teach me something new. Thanks!

      I love using currency in my collages 🤩 Many governments spend a lot of time and resources to design beautiful and interesting bills, right? There's lots of pretty ones out there.

    Margarete: I thought this video was very good for several reasons. I’m always interested in what the backstory of an artist is. Being an interior designer, I’m always interested in the environment they are working in. Also, you are very detailed, organized and creative. I personally like your style. (another factor) Thank you for your insight. Carol from California

    • @MargareteMiller
      @MargareteMiller  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow! Thanks so much for you kind comments, Carol!! I love the study of interior design. I think taking control of the environment around you in your home can be hugely meaningful, and I'm trying to take a more active role. Before I would let things go but as time goes by, I am making it a priority for me to create my happy spaces.

    Making master boards is one of my fave projects. I cut them to postcard size, add stitching and a personalized postmark stamp over an old stamp on the flip side. I never use decorative rubber stamps on master boards, but your vlog has encouraged me to try it. Thank you, Margarete!

    I found this very helpful. My collage Master boards have been more eclectic, and I mainly use them for journal cards and tags. I sometimes use them to cut tabs of other shapes, especially for the ones that are not cohesive It is an art I truly admire so I would like to improve which is why this video was so helpful. I like the idea of starting out with a neutral color and then add color and stamping keeping the color to a minimum . Thanks for sharing and inspiring me Take Care Hugs and Smiles

    Hi Margarete, loved your cards!! I have made *one* master board without any planning... it turned out pretty bad, so it's sitting on a corner. Every so often I think of going back to it and re-starting. Thank you for the method presentation in this video!! It's a much more approachable way (unlike the 'intuitive way' ) . I have to try it it!!

    • @MargareteMiller

      You can go back and add to it, no? Add some new layers, or maybe some color with pencils or other mediums. You can use it at the base for something. Or cut out the bits you like. Even if they are small, they are something. 👍🙂

    I love the way you go about creating a masterboard. And this was a soothing and relaxing, unhurried video. But I have to ask what is an ink box card? I have done a few masterboards but I've only used one to cut because I don't know what to do with it. I like how you address the issue of feeling like you get stuck and come back to the project another day. Great tips.

    I love these ink box cards! I have made a few masterboards, usually on poster board and quite large. I would cut the boards up into tags and other pieces of ephemera for swaps and junk journals. The larger boards proved to be quite cumbersome to work on, so I started using smaller pieces of substrait. I very much like your idea in using the 12x12 piece of scrapbook paper. quite easy to cut up evenly. I've started keeping used calendars to create a set of masterboards. These are also good for making themed glue books.
    I love the inclusion of details of your business and your collections. Very nicely done!

    I thoroughly enjoyed this video! I need all the help I can get with collage and I appreciate all the tips. I recently made 5 master boards that I intended to use for journal covers. I didn't realize that even after scoring my spines that the papers would crack and pull away from the base. I'm in the process of repairing them all, taping the spines and then will have to glue lace/fabric over top. Disappointing but lesson learned.

    • @MargareteMiller
      @MargareteMiller  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I definitely have done that, too. Those are the times when I wish I like using PVA glue or some other wet glues, but I just don't like to! Then I get into trouble sometimes when I cut things down and the papers pull away from the base. An idea is to apply a piece of tissue paper over the top with matte medium. Sometimes I do that.

    Thank you for this I make journals and shove them places and you have inspired me to display them because they are truly one of a kind and each different in their own way. Thank you....Would you ever consider doing a weekend collage retreat for women because I would pay a lot of money to have that experience and i'm sure others would too with you teaching. Think about it I would help you plan it if you don't have time. XO

      Nice, Beth!! It makes me happy to know others are displaying their art. It's important to us, right? It should be on display 🙂. I've thought about hosting a retreat but I'm not ready yet. I've got too many obligations at home with family, pets, everyday life. Thanks for asking, though 😉

    I enjoyed this. You always inspire me to try new things. I made my first masterboard last week and cut it into postcards. I had fun doing this and plan to do more. Maybe one for ink box cards. Loved seeing your shelves so many nice things. I am fortunate to have a art studio in my home. I have gotten so involved in collage,, that I neglect my watercolors. But what fun I am having. Thanks for all the tips and ideas. 🎨🖌

      It's nice to be able to toggle between art forms, Jean. Whenever you need a break or want to change your creative direction, you can switch to the other. That sounds like a great plan to me. I have watercolors but I am so scared to try. It seems so daunting to me. I really would like to add details of watercolors in my collages. Someday!

    Hi Margarete, thank you for sharing your collage art, your process and your work spaces. Love to see it. I'm sure you get asked this question a lot but where do you get your postage stamps? I've purchased a "grab bag" of stamps at Hobby Lobby but it ended up being a bust as most all the stamps were of mostly 2 countries and mostly all the same. Would love to get a better variety of countries and so forth.

    Thank you for sharing your ideas on how you use a masterboard. I don't use planners, I will write a thought in them then I never pick it up again. I like masterboards because I like to collage and after I cut them I use them as tags. Not sure what else to do with a masterboard, whay else can I do?

    • @MargareteMiller
      @MargareteMiller  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can also use them as pages in a junk journal or other kind of book. You could even use them as the cover. I've done that before. 👍

    I make junk journals. I make a masterboard for every journal and cut it into various pieces to make coordinated pieces throughout the journal. I don't know what an inkbox card is. Any chance you can tell me? Thanks for the inspiration.

    I would also like to know what are ink box cards and also what do you use them for?

    • @MargareteMiller
      @MargareteMiller  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Margaret, so inkbox cards are a type of finished card. Postcards can be 4" x 6", ATCs are the size of a playing card, and inkbox cards are 3" x 3" and are roughly the size of a Tim Holtz distress inkbox, for example. You can use them for anything like using them in tuck spots in journals, or you can glue them back to back and make little books from them. Here is a video I did doing just that: th-cam.com/video/DgWUm_I4PC0/w-d-xo.html

    You inspired me to purchase a stamp collector book (with stamps adhered on the pages)- how do I remove them from the book to reuse in my collage?

    • @MargareteMiller
      @MargareteMiller  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'll have to soak them, Rachel. Tear out a page (don't worry about ruining the album. You are going to be repurposing the stamps), and then soak the whole thing in a tray or bowl with lukewarm water. After 5 minutes, start checking to see if they are slipping off the page. Take the loose stamps and lay them flat on a paper towel.

      They are called inkobox cards because they are the same size as a Tim Holtz distress ink box. They are 3" x 3". I make little books from them, or I trade them, like ATCs.

    Margarete, I'm wondering when making a master board using 12x12 paper, is this foundation really strong enough for a postcard? My 12x12 paper is usually 80 pd. Should I buy the white core 120 pd catdstock?
