  • I was trying out this riveter tool and ran into some issues that I wanted to warn others about.
    You should definitely get a riveting tool, but maybe not this one! I bought this from Harbor Freight:

    That "annoying little nub" is essential to the rivets strength.

      Sometimes the nub is nice and flat. Sometimes it's not. I used mine to attach leather pieces and it was working great. Then the nubs got taller and the rivet stems had to be nipped off.

      Most rivets I’ve seen are much flatter than that

  • @rootvalley2
    @rootvalley2 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Close the tool down about halfway, then insert the rivet into the tool, insert rivet into hole, clamp down, tool will bottom out, open tool again slightly to take another bite, finish off rivet till pop. That’s how I use it.

    • @someoneinncarolina
      @someoneinncarolina  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I think a lot of the comfort is getting the hang of the tool through experience over time. I just felt that the user shouldn't have to work so hard to comfortably use a hand tool. :) Thanks for the comment!

    Ref your comment about air tight rivets. Not a good idea. However rivets are available that leaves a hole through the centre or they are available in a style that leaves the head of the stem in the rivet. OK for panels that are going to see rain. Also if you have to give more than one squeeze you have used too long a rivet, which is why the bit that pokes through is a mess. If you’ve only got long rivets put a thin washer on the back.

    Take the clasp off and tuck it in the little pocket provided for it on the inside of the handle while you are doing a multi rivet job and it's in the way.

    Thanks mate! This really helped me out! Couldn’t figure out why mine wasn’t cutting the heads off! After reassembling mine, it now works like a charm! Cheers.

    Must've got lucky with mine. $5 HF special. Works great so far but only needed to do 4 rivets of 2nd largest size. Its back in tool box now. But did work great.

    Thank you for a great informative video, and I wholeheartedly agree with your comments regarding the span of the tool, especially when using the larger/thicker rivets, I had to place the item on the bench and used body weight to close the tool, taking your advice to hand and avoided catching my chest or fingers when the tool finished the rivet suddenly.
    Thank you again

    Thanks for the review. Even though you didn't mention it, I was able to take a close look at the head of the tool. The head is fixed at a 90 degree angle to the frame. I have used riveters in the past, both cheap, no-name tools and more expensive Stanley branded tools and all have had heads that can be rotated between angled (90 degrees) and straight (180 degrees). I've had need to use the tools in both configurations so not having that capability is a deal-breaker for me. The picture on the app wasn't as clear and it looked adjustable, but thanks to your video I was able to eliminate it as on option for me. Thanks!

    I Got the same one, looks the same, only that the metal of the tool is powder coated. Bought it 2 days ago. I love it, regardles of the negatives. Payed about 7$ and 500 rivets for 11$.
    In my honest opinion. if you want a better one, pay a bit more. Im happy with it because it is cheap.
    Great video!

      someguyinncarolina Well you're always going to have a shop side head, but they do make a pneumatic one. Don't know if I'd use a harbor freight one though, but I found this puller perfectly adaquate for what it is.

    it’s funny as a kid in the 1970s my Dad really used the heck out of PopRivets on Automotive projects and whatever else he could think of i was kind of mystified on how they worked but i knew they held things pretty well my very first car i bought was a 2 seater British Sports Car that needed anew Convertible roof and on the part of the top frame that clamped onto the Windsheild the canvas was sandwiched between two metal parts Clamped tight with PopRivets i had that car over 14 years and that connection never loosened up after My Dad and I Pop Riveted it back together with a new top installed i’m a retired Woodworker and i used a lot of PopRivets fabricating and hooking up new Machinery in our Shops to our Dust Collection systems and moving HVAC ductwork to set up the Machinery in our facility

    You know they have counter sunk rivets they're also called flathead rivets for your rivet gun and it doesn't leave that little knob.✨🤪✨

    I think this is the $12 HF model (yellow grip). The red handle model is $5. I'm undecided which one to get because I'll probably rarely use it. I might go with the yellow using a coupon.

  • @camcordernonsense5264
    @camcordernonsense5264 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I got 2 great rivets out of it.
    Then it won't snap off. I was excited about the harbor freight.
    $5 more and I got an Arrow.

    • @someoneinncarolina
      @someoneinncarolina  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bummer. I'm still using this tool and it has held up well, but when it comes to HF there isn't a lot of QA, so it's often luck of the draw.

    It’s not Harbor Freights poor design. It’s a poor design stolen by Harbor Freight from Stanley. Looks exactly like Stanley’s riveter.

  • @engineerinnewyork
    @engineerinnewyork 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Most rivet guns are made like that. The handles can indeed spread far apart, but that is no reason for you to stretch your hand that far. Just hold the gun at whatever spread angle suits your hand’s size and strength, and do not expect to be able to snap the shank in one go, unless you are King Kong. Lots of videos on TH-cam show the proper way to do it with minimal effort and no risk to life and limb.

    Hey my HF won't release rivet stem have to take it apart to get stem out junk !!

    • @someoneinncarolina
      @someoneinncarolina  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had that issue as well, though it was because I was using the wrong tip with a larger rivet that it wasn't designed for. Still junk, but you might want to double check the tip you are using with the rivet.

    I bought one of these an right away I noticed them stem of the river gets stuck every time I have to jam a drill bit thru the front an hammer it thru the back so far I used it about five times an now the tool won’t even cut the rivet at all it’s junk I do not recommend this tool

    • @someoneinncarolina
      @someoneinncarolina  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You might be using the wrong sized head is my guess. I think I made that mistake once and it was a real pain to remove the stem. I agree this tool is not great either way though!

  • @jeffmilkey
    @jeffmilkey 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Love the bloody knuckles and thumb nail....pretty sure you don't use rivets for airtight applications....you should start this review by saying...DO NOT BUY THIS TOOL. I have two, both broke within just a few rivets. Toss it in the garbage.

    • @someoneinncarolina
      @someoneinncarolina  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, that's pretty bad! Mine is still working, but also still a PITA. For making it airtight I use a sealant such as silicone caulk. I can't think of a better way without some serious tools to make something airtight regardless of fastener. That said, I have checked and these rivets are airtight in the specific location of the rivet. I was impressed, but it wouldn't take much more than a little stress and time to loosen them I suspect. Thanks for the comment!

    • @someoneinncarolina
      @someoneinncarolina  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wish I had an answer for you off hand. According to another person who commented, the issues I mention with this rivet tool are common to the "puller" type of tools. I haven't personally gone shopping to find a better tool at this point, because I don't do rivet work that often. I have continued to use this tool in spite of the issues I think it has. Sorry I can't be more helpful!
