NO, Bang Si-hyuk, their CEO, wanted a HIP HOP Group, and it was his vision to put it together. BTS debuted as a HIP HOP IDOL group in 2013. They had a rough time in the beginning, which is the reason for all the hate they got from underground hip hop ,and from media and the KPOP industry. They persevered and became very successful, branching out and trying different genre's and fusing the sounds togther to create something their own. They were given creative freedom since the beginning, which was practically unheard of in the industry. And they used social media to promote themselves, when other groups weren't allowed to. BTS did that because they had limited opportunities in cojmparison to other groups from the Big 3 agencies. Their small independent company didn't have the power or the money to promote them well.
Also, this song is giving homage to the artists that inspired them. And it's an awesome B side.

It wasn’t the label. Actually the label began to create BTS to be a hip hop group, having RM and Suga as the two first members who are in fact underground rappers/producers. But they quickly found out that their first albums did not fare as well as they’d hoped, so they changed their style to a more pop genre, though eventually they incorporated hip hop anyway and rapping in almost every song. Now they are hip hop/ pop/ R&B/… anything and everything!!!!! Thry can do it all and do it with excellence!!!!💜💜💜💜💜💜💜🥰

      Half-true.
Big Hit tried different ways to debut RM, RM&Suga, etc. but it did not quiet work out in the second half of 2010.
In early 2011 they noticed that they could not afford to simply debut a Hiphop group. So they did a bit of homework of how to actually make money. The label had co-signed some artists but the artists understandably did not want to re-sign with them later as Big Hit was a miniscule label no matter how much freedom they had there.
So it was decided to debut an Idol group and the other were signed.
Idol music mixes "rapping" (I would not call most of them back than rappers - as they where only rappers because they could not sing) - a legacy from Seo Taiji - with singing but is (usually ) not that Hiphop based (BigBang was one of the rare exceptions in the 2000s)
When BTS debuted the label had ca. 7,5 mllion USD debt and pretty nothing to balance that - inlcuding missing connections in the industry.
BTS debut album was actually sold well for a nugu artists that was not an industry baby and so was their next EP a few months later. They won almost all rookie awards - with the exception of MAMA - who refused to invite them despite BTS being candidates for the trophy
Hiphop is what the members wanted to do. The R&B mix is normal and gave the vocalline something to do. They did not do that "in spite" of the labels wants - the label *wanted* them to do what came natural to them.
People always seem to forget that RM was already a poet even before he discovered Hiphop. Suga's first love is a piano and he very much loved the OSTs from Ryuchi Sakamoto - may he rest in peace.
You can watch the T&D (Training and Development vids on the HYBE channel - RM is one of the people talking).
Boracity magazine made a video essay about BTS Chapter 1 music (I don't like all her interpretations but overall it is very good) and a vid called "The "I miss BTS old sound" excuse" - which shows BTS "sound" overall.

I know you’ve seen comments like this before - I’m another older person (I’m 56) who rarely listened to rap and hiphop before BTS but they have made me really appreciate these genres too. Now sometimes my fave parts of BTS songs are the rap verses. When BTS first started releasing solo albums as they entered the military I imagined the vocal line’s albums would be my faves - but it’s RM x 2 (Indigo and RPWP both) and j-hope’s Hope On The Street that I love the best (I enjoy each of the other members solo work a lot too)

I totally understand what you mean! Hip Hop can be a unique display of passion. So glad to hear that BTS has had a similar impact for you as they have for me - expanding our musical genre pallette one song at a time!

Same I didn’t really like rap/hip pop before BTS. Now I can appreciate it & sometimes my favorite part is BTS songs are the rap parts. I also like the rap line solo albums a lot & some of my favorites!! I am still picky, but I do appreciate the genre a lot more bc of BTS.

A big reason they talk about/defend their love for hip-hop is because Korea is a very conservative, education-focused country. Being individual, expressing yourself, talking about struggles, pursuing the arts, mental health, etc., is pretty frowned upon, though much better nowadays. And that is what art and hip-hop is about. Just for example, RM and Suga both had experiencing with fighting with their parents as young teens because their parents disapproved of them writing music and performing in the underground hip-hop scene. RM explained that his mother once ripped up all of the lyrics he wrote. RM is very intelligently gifted; has a high IQ and placed in the top .3% of the country's school testing. His family thought he was wasting his intelligence on music. They suffered a lot as kids and teens as their families and people doubted their dreams, and they finally made it. That is the reason they are so passionate about their love for music and hip-hop.

The parents had a reason not to be that happy with their sons choices and you can even find it in BTS lyrics:
      Dope, Nevermind, etc.
You can look up "n-po generation" on wikipedia. I hate that such a phrase exists.
"The Rise of Bangtan"-series also helps with their information in the first 3 (?) episodes.
But when RM ran away and thought about not debuting with BTS he talked to his father who told him that he would regret it if he did not try.
Suga's parents drove him to the label building and watched him enter.
It was not because they did not love their children but because they were afraid for them.

@@ruthfischer7615 I totally agree, I never said they didn't love them. They are extremely close with their parents now; it has to do with societal expectations, but that is what caused a lot of their early struggles with making music.

Something's off with the algorithm as it's the first time I'm seeing you. Best reaction on their hip hop content I've seen to date. You even brought up ASAP and wild for the night. So happy when people get them instead of being closed minded and just assuming something right away. Them having roots in hip hop is the reason why the lyrics for their songs are on another level. They have poets' souls.

Their peers had problem with them doing hip hop są idol group, so hate mostly came from underground and hip hop fans, bc "how can they rap and still be in idol band and dance, etc" stupid thinking but also times were different, when you were in underground and choosen different road you were called sell off no matter how good and sincere your music was and if your label was ok but the fact alone was enought to call them out on anythinig.
RM was asked do many times in interviews why hip hop and he simply said that this was genre they know the most and feel the best in also feld that it could become more mainstream so more people would like it. It is the best answer he could give. With time they really expanded with genres bc they grow learned and also there is 7 people that have visions soo yeah.. even tho they started with hip hop now they do a lot genres but there always is rap there.

One of my favorite songs. Extra cool. RM and Sugar were already rappers before BTS. They were criticized when they turned into a K pop group.

This is why it's important to watch a guide to BTS. Both the one by Taylor Mari and Purple Snow. Preferably not split into parts.

I hope more people can understand that BTS and BigHit almost have the same relationship as BTS and ARMY where there is mutual respect, trust, support. I feel because we are so used to labels being sketchy we run to put BH under that same umbrella but if u ever really listen to the guys talk abt their company you'd learn that it's far from that. Every project BTS had done from debut to now has been their original thoughts, feelings and ideas with the company there to assist and guide and that's something else that sets the whole unit of BTS (incl. BH and ARMY) apart from the rest. 💜

    • @PremierMusicTribe

That's great insight! It's true I assumed that BH operated as most other labels, I'm really glad that's not the case! We love artist empowerment!
