    I totally got the Taxonomy idea, wow what a breakthrough. I had to watch it again to work through it, and it is so simple to do! I am using it for Products that are really services, but I have a bunch of public service posts using the services cpt which I am going to expand for SEO. Products are related to services as these are actual services clients pay for.

    This was a great stream. Not easy to catch live due to the time difference however I did for this week. I liked your idea on the shift in site architecture. I've been mulling a similar problem on my own site this past week and keep thinking there has to be a better way to connect things without duplicating my effort.
    Thanks again

    My God Kevin, this content is awesome. As a UK-based 50-yr old corporate employee who's taught himself (static) Wordpress web development over the past number of years, I feel SO ignorant, daunted but also inspired watching your content and investing in your tools for use on my future client projects. Thanks for sharing so much of your time, energy and experience to inspire and challenge this community to be and do better.

    Glad I watched this video! Thanks Kevin!
    Just did some testing, and I think I see how centralized taxonomies work. The piece I was missing was -> where in the heck do I create the data that would populate a taxonomy post - like a single service page?
    I created a dummy taxonomy "services" in ACF and then linked it to my own testimonials. From there I opened up my testimonials cpt to discover the services taxonomy in the dropdown. What you see when you click on "services" in the dropdown was the answer: It's where you can create the data that feeds into whatever archive templates you would create in Bricks -> templates. I clicked "Add new service" which created a new service (similar to creating a new post).
    But, unlike a CPT, this taxonomy post does not have the big Gutenberg area (that big old white blank canvas where you can enter text). It's very trim. That's where ACF comes into play - Then I created an ACF field group (with dummy fields) and linked it to "taxonomy is equal to service". That gives the taxonomy post more fields and makes it workable.
    Was also very pleased to find that ACF quick edits works on these taxonomy posts - Now I can show a column that sorts the order of services for example (preferred service first in the loop)

    Will definitely have to rewatch. A lot going on in this episode with a lot of new ideas. The taxonomy centred architecture approach has much potential. As I read it, products category is set up to be assembled by pulling in data and content from the other linked CPTs.
    And… black blending into black. Just like the perfectly pulled pint of Guinness.

New Frames website build looks great and discussion about different features was insightful -- provides thoughts for current/new website projects.

    Great video and love the new design. I really appreciate you sharing the thought process and the behind the scenes - so many gems. The external link indicator is brilliant, but opening links in a new window is generally considered an accessibility error because even with the notice it can be disorienting, and it takes away the user's option. You probably need an aria label on Education to better inform users that they are going to TH-cam.

      I had a client who absolutely wanted all external links to Open in a new tab, despite my accesibility concerns. Ended up with a combination of symbol + aria label + tooltip with a notice. But my approach was more than 2 Lines of code. 😮

    Kevin, I’ve been working on a directory website. Awhile back, I looked into using a Taxonomy as a CPT. The only downside I found that pushed me back (temporarily) to using a CPT is comments not being available on taxonomies. I’m back to using a Taxonomy as a CPT because of rss feed support and many of the other benefits of using a Taxonomy. Planning on testing a CPT and front end form to get around this.

    Hi Kevin, a great video with some outstanding snippets 😄. For me, I would love to see a more in-depth tutorial on the building of the pages and in particular, how you got the individual frames component into an iFrame (I think you said that) on the template. IS this something you think you might consider please?

  • @StuartMcKelvie
    @StuartMcKelvie 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I've been working on a site using the same sort of centralized taxonomy structure that you describe in this video Kevin. So far, I am loving the flexibility and ease of use that it provides. The only small downside I've come across so far is that when sharing a taxonomy between different CPTs (using ACF), the Count column within the taxonomy table counts all posts across the various related post types, rather than displaying a count of just the posts within that CPT. It also means you can't use the default {terms_count} dynamic data tag when building an archive page (I used some custom code to display a filtered term count for the required post type). Hopefully I'm just missing something simple here, but regardless, it hasn't been that much of a pain to fix so far

    • @Gearyco
      @Gearyco  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Glad to hear it's working out. I'll watch out for those caveats!

    • @StuartMcKelvie
      @StuartMcKelvie 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Gearyco Kevin, as I keep working through this site, I'm curious how you're displaying the different CPTs for a certain Product taxonomy. For example, on the Frames product page, it's easy enough to have a query loop for changelog entries, and a separate query loop below that for reviews. Have you been able to figure out how to have separate pages for these CPTs as a child of the Product taxonomy? I haven't been able to figure out if this is possible without complicated URL redirect rules, so I guess that's another downside if you need these to be separate pages rather than contained on a taxonomy archive page for a single product.

    • @Gearyco
      @Gearyco  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@StuartMcKelvie Not sure exactly what you mean by separate pages of CPT as child of Product Taxonomy?
      Do you mean, can each category in products have its own unique layout? Yes, that's possible.

    • @StuartMcKelvie
      @StuartMcKelvie 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Gearyco yep, that's what I'm meaning. How are you able to create a Changelog page just for Frames-related changelogs? Are you manually creating that page? What does the URL structure look like?

  • @GeertBonamie
    @GeertBonamie 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Thanks for your intake on using a taxonomy this way. Let's assume we are building a single template for a taxonomy term. I am probably cutting a few corners but am I right in saying that your approach allows you to pull information from CPTs where the taxonomy was used, right? As far as I know, a tax term doesn't have a featured image, so if wanted a banner background that is different for each term, then the idea is that you set up another CPT ('featured images', where you then also use that taxonomy of course) and that in the single term template you pull the featured image from the 'featured image' CPT? Forgive me for asking; I'm only trying to mentally map the modus operandi with that tax-based approach. If you have many dynamic fields that you want to use in your single term template (a featured image, a tagline, a short title, whatever), then you'd need as many CPTs as you have dynamic fields. I'm not sure if I am making sense -sorry.

  • @bartpronk7141
    @bartpronk7141 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Interesting information about 'Centralized Taxonomy Architecture'. I am curious how you add content blocks with ACF to the taxonomy, so that it looks like a regular product or service page. Example I am working on is for an architect. He has projects but also specialisms (services). Now I have a CPT type for services, but I also have those same services as a taxonomy for the projects (also a CPT).

    • @bartpronk7141
      @bartpronk7141 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Gearyco yes, okay, that is definitely a good option! But in terms of scalability and maintainability I find it easier that the content on those pages can be filled via ACF fields. But I find ACF fields in the taxonomy are not as user-friendly as with a regular page or post. How do you look at that?

    Can someone help me decipher part of the pricing template. I noticed at around 59:23 when Kevin opened up the pricing template there was a element named 'Template' within. The architecture idea has some blind-spots. You could just as easily hook into the save_post and create a bi-directional in one click with a Yes/No switch meta-field with a custom snippet and ACF, keeping the usual post structure. The performance is marginal, especially for most SMEs site's. And managing those relationships from a Post is less work then managing everything from several different post types I would think. Depends how you set it up. Big change for small gains
