I have to say that I fully agree with your findings here Pete. But the only thing I would say in difference is that I found the Cleveland wedges easier to control then the vokeys due to the weighting of the vokeys being heavier and in delicate shots they were a bit harder to control. So I have been playing the Cleveland wedges and I have since shaved off more strokes.

Over past 10 years i've had SM6's, SM7's, then SM8's last year and sold them and custom ordered TM MG3 wedges, 52 deg and a 56 TW grind. The TW grind has a shaved off heel and a beveled off leading edge for pitches and chips off of tight lies. Works great. These will wear out in about 3 years and then i'll move into SM10's !

I have had Cleveland RTX 4’s in my bag for a few years and really loved them. Went to get new wedges, and was just going to upgrade to the RTX 6. However, ended up testing all kinds of wedges to see what I like. To my surprise, I ended up getting all new of the Wilson Staff model forged wedges and am absolutely in love with them. They are incredibly underrated. I have become slightly a Wilson fanboy as I’ve recently switched to their ball as well! Definitely worth a try

100% agree. I just got the 56 and 60 (12 deg bounce) and they’re the best - AND most forgiving - wedges I’ve ever used (of Vokeys, Clevelands, MD4’s, etc). Roger Cleveland joined Callaway in ‘96 (after leaving Cleveland) and, IMHO, he’s turned them into one of the best wedge manufacturers in the game. Hit ‘em straight! 👊🏼😉

    • @Plastpackad
      @Plastpackad ปีที่แล้ว

For me it was the other way around. Callaway had a more flippy feel with it's weight more towards the toe, harder to control. TM is way more balanced but has a smaller club face and bigger faced wedges might feel more forgiving.

Having nine generations of Vokey speaks volumes for the design and build quality and consistency; with all the professionals continuing to use them, that's a living testament. That said, my personal preference remains with the Cleveland legacy wedges. I keep coming back to my 588 Gunmetals, superb feel and touch with still plenty of bite and spin after two+ decades in and out of my bag. They have also retained their black finish even after many, many rounds and practice, unlike the newer line iterations from Cleveland.

If you’re unfamiliar with it, it is a very cheap low end brand (in all of their products). Now I know, it’s not going to outperform any vokey, however if anyone gets a chance to hit one you may be surprised. Cons: putting up with sneers from playing partners, not the feel of the high end ones reviewed here, spin is , shall we say limited. Pros: can hit it as far as these, still decent feel, will plough through the deepest, thickest rough with ease I guarantee, and!.....about $39 ! Don’t scoff until you’ve tried it.

Peter, given you are from the famously damp North West of England, it would be interesting to see the results of a comparison between the Vokeys and the RTX6 zipcores in the less than optimum conditions in your clip. I have a sneaky feeling that if you factored that in to your considerations, the zipcores would be in your bag rather than the vokeys.

I've used Cleveland for ages but after seeing this vid, I may have to give the Vokey's a try.

Played a 56 Cleveland RTX and a 60 Vokey SM9 got the Hi Toes as a gift and for me i like the cleveland best for full shots Hi Toe the best around the green Vokey's feel the best

Glad you had no crowded course during your test. I was there in February and the course was too filled… no chance for tests like this.

Had the TM MG3 line and was extremely underwhelmed with them. I dumped them for the Jaws Raw and Full Toe from Callaway. I'm beyond happy with my Callaway wedges. I also had SM9s and didn't like the feel of them.
Personal preference is different for everyone.

Vokeys are good yes .. but they are not true forgings, so they will never go in my bag. Great review as well, thanks. I play a mizuno t4 52 raw and a very old but much loved MacGregor tourney 58 wedge.

Interested why you didnt test the Milled Grind 3 wedge, not the high toe version. Smaller shaoe, better on full shots. Interesting.
I have the milled grind 3 TW edition 56 and 60° and theyre the best wedges i tested. I had the milled grind 2 versions too.

Not sure if you have already tested) but would be great to see if the Edison wedges could make it into your bag.

I lost my wedges and had to play with some bullshit Bombtech wedges.. after playing them instead of my $200 Vokey wedges I realized all wedges are the same and I can play any wedge. I’m also just a naturally good wedge player so maybe that’s the reason but I’ve never had trouble with any wedge, they’re the easiest club to hit, I can be slicing my 7 iron off the planet and I can always hit a dead straight 100 yard wedge no matter what, wedges are easy and fun.

I got the SM9's and it has been love hate; on bad days I don't want to shape shots. I just want a simple stock pitch to the middle of the green which is very difficult...On good days, however, you feel like Spieth throwing darts!

I'm surprised with you playing in wet weather so often that you didnt put the Zipcores in the bag, think you would just see more consistent results for the majority of your rounds.

It would be interesting to see your Vokey lofts and grinds and bounce you selected and why. I know some players like a full grind with more bounce in some wedges with the next one in the bag with less bounce and grind relief. Are the shafts you have for wedges the same as your other higher irons?

Right now I have SM8s, and I love them. Very consistant. I am curious about wedge with grooves all the way to the toe, like the hi-toe. I like to hit more toward the toe out of the sand or thick rough.

Interesting results. When I got new wedges last year just after the SM9 release I ended up with Cleveland RTX5. I got better spin numbers, 500 rpm, more than the SM9s! I haven’t noticed any drop off in the shots I play from my SM8s to the Clevelands. The only difference I saw was the 25/ wedge price difference!

The 56 down to 46 lofts in Vokeys are fine even though they are not forged any longer, they feel ok but the 58 and above have a hollow section in them to reduce weight in their design, and that clicky sound they give off is annoying to my ear. I own a set and you can definitely hear the difference on shots compared to a wedge that doesn't have that hollow section , such as a Cobra or Callaway or Edel. I love the PXG Sugar daddy's those are amazing feeling and looking wedges.

This review should be updated to swap out the TM Hi-Toe for the new Milled Grind 4. It is an amazing wedge. I have two in the bag and will be replacing my two Hi-Toes in the future with the MG 4.

I know you can’t test every manufacturers wedge out there but there are some less expensive forged wedges that it would have been great to see you try. Ie Wilson Staff, Cobra Snake. The other thing I recently learned about volkey wedges is the pros are forged and what is sold in stores are cast. Where using forged or cast volkey wedges?
