Buying something to escape negative emotions is a tough one to beat.
I love to vintage shop. I make mistakes sometimes but when I do I pass the items on to friends, family members, or donate them again to a thrift store. I try to shop at thrift stores which donate to causes near to my heart. That way if I make an error I don’t feel badly. I just consider it a gift to the charity, and I donate it to them again for resale. ❤️
I've been doing a MAJOR declutter this month, and once again, I'm kicking myself for poor buying choices/habbits! Grrrr!!!! I'm *DEFINITELY* going to be more mindful going forward!
There's this pressure nowadays that everything has to be "new", so ranges of things are constantly changing. A few years ago, you could save up and buy a few pieces of a set at a time (eg dinner service; mugs; even garden furniture) & build up the set gradually. Now you run the risk of your set becoming unfashionable & getting deleted so you are not able to complete it. It leads to subtle pressure to buy too much all at once in case you are not able to later.
Love your channel! It’s really helping me to pare down my stuff! BTW, can you do a plant tour/plant care video of your home? I’m a houseplant lover and I see so many amazing plants in your home in your videos! :)
The only thing that helps is returning unused items within 29 days. If I haven't used it I don't love it or never really needed it.
Absolutely!
Especially when I’m on vacation 🤦♀️
Bingo! Impulsive, emotional shopping for me! I definitely need to get a hold on that
I can relate to a lot of these examples. I’ve struggled with sensitive skin for a long time and even though I’ve found products that do work for me, I’m always looking for something better or something to add. Now I have a drawer full of fails. Lately I’ve been looking at coffee makers. I was considering a Nespresso, but when I look at machine options I think, “oh, I’ll want to be able to make a latte, but also regular coffee, and iced coffee. I could easily try to justify a $700 machine. And then there’s the cost of the pods. I realistically don’t need it. White shirts and boots are a weakness of mine also.
Awe love your idea of the comprise over the winter boots. Buying these 2nd hand, yes, what a great compromise. I too am always tempted to buy & it almost scares me how stuff can get a hold on me. But I definitely am trying to be more conscious regarding this. Trying to make sensible buying decisions that will fit my lifestyle. God bless & have a great day.
Love this! My most repeated mistake is with clothes. I am trying to find my 'uniform' and keep buying t shirts and tops in multiple colours only to find they are not really me or poor quality, or some other reason. And I don't send them back! Food for thought, thank you 😊
I work for Spirit Halloween. People buying new costumes keeps me in a fun seasonal job.
Thank you! I can relate to this!
There are no shopping mistakes. Every purchase is an experiment. The important thing is to learn from our purchases.
Love the 'real talk'; ) Thank you Elin! It helps~
I am afraid I must disagree with the comment below mine and say I think there Are shopping mistakes - I've made them many times, And I have learned some things along the way that make it easier to avoid making them again. I appreciate your videos!!
A very good video all your points are truly accurate thanks a lot Elin
I was literally crocheting while watching this...
white tees are so relatable! TY for sharing
Thanks for the honest talk Elin, I just deleted something from my list that I'd only just added before watching the video - I'd convinced myself that I wanted/needed it & even though it is a practical item, I realised that I already have somehing else that would do the same thing 🤦♀️👍
If you need to buy a tuxedo you need the accessories to wear it. Like saying if I buy a lamp then I need to buy lightbulbs so maybe don’t buy the lamp😂
I literally just bought the saucers to match my teacups out of obligation or, better yet, fantasy self. Ugh 🤦🏼♀️
Don’t teacups come together with saucers😁
@@lauras4472 not when they're vintage and you have to match pieces 😆
@@marlyking1972 well, you have no choice then😆
I save receipts for at least a month so if I don't use the item or regret buying it I can get it.
Some of these really hit home for me, and I appreciated the real talk. :)
Fantastic video :) I wish this was something they talked about during schooling years. Even just the concept of Minimalism would have been immensely useful for me to understand at a younger age. I certainly would have spent my money differently/more mindfully right out of school/university if this kind of conversation was had :) Thank you for sharing your thoughts :)
There is even a name in sociology for your 1st point it is called the Diderot effect
I'm not saying that I've arrived and that there isn't always room for improvement, but my shopping habits have improved tremendously. I have become very "stingy" about what I allow to come into my home. And if I make a mistake, I am not hard on myself, but just let the item go.
An insightful video. I love the way you present the concepts. Well done.
Great video
Elin, did I missed the video you were going to attach? Thank you
You are sooo beautiful today! Thanks for the video
Excellent video. Very helpful.
Excellent video, as always. But, am I missing the "Appreciation Odds" link? I didn't see it. 🤔
Hi Elin, I believe you promote Skillshare. Will you share a discount link so I can sign up? Thank you!
One of the benefits of decluttering is "getting" to learn my personal bad decision patterns. ; - D 7:09 I really get the wisdom of spending a little more for things I'll actually use/enjoy after confronting my regrets over things like a sheet set bought on sale and used only once (hideously scratchy!). 😃❤
😊😊😊
