I agree wholeheartedly, "Vive Le Rock" was his best album. After the "Strip" album confused the Ant fans, even though had some good songs like "Spanish Games", "Vive Le Rock" was a roaring return to form. "Vive le Rock" was my favourite all time album, a celebration of his glam rock, Spector influence mixed with his KOTWF era sound. The rockabilly glam sound is perfect, and his quirky humour is back on tracks like "P.O.E" and "Mohair locker-room pin up boys" makes it a truly classic album.
Hey Richard! I finally made it here! Love the shirt, by the way! Thank you for the education, as I haven't listened to Adam Ant for too long and I'm unfamiliar with some of these later albums of his! Wow, that Antbox looks worth discovering. Gonna look it up! Dirk is my #1! Nice that you have the original! Very hard to find around here. I have that reissue jacket version you also showed. Prince Charming is on my want list. I know I'll find a pristine copy one of these days! 🙂 Your #1 is fab! I like that you showed singles and comps, too! Brilliant! Just brilliant!
Yay, you made it Hanna. Thank you so much for leaving a comment. The Ant Box is a brilliant CD box set and it includes quite a few rarities and demos from around the Dirk period so if you ever see it at a reasonable price, I would highly recommend it. Prince Charming, although not quite as good as Kings, is not far off it. Vive Le Rock is another one I think you might like as it has a glammy / punk sound and is produced by the great Tony Visconti.
I have a soft spot for “Kings of the Wild Frontier” album as I have fond memories of dancing to the singles of it at the local church youth club when I was about 12. I picked up a copy about 6 years ago and love it. I’ll have a look out for some of his other albums that you like. Did you see his gig at the Black Box in Belfast about 9 years ago? I heard that him and his band were great. A friend of mine knows the guy who promoted that gig who said that Adam was a bit of a diva that night lol. He’s Adam Ant, so he’s entitled to be in a bad mood if he wants. Enjoyed this, Thank you.
Hi Edward, that was the gig I was at, it was like a large tent! He really concentrated on the Dirk album but it was great to hear him do Prince Charming, Stand n Deliver, Dog Eat Dog etc. The only disappointment was that there was no Puss n Boots or Friend or Foe. Still, a fantastic gig!
Hi Richard!! i really enjoyed this video/ranking very much. I'm just a casual Adam Ant fan, because he never got many airplay donw here, but i do remember some of his videos, however not the songs very well, i will now looki after some of his music and listen to it..... had no idea he had so many releases and still putting out material. cheers and be well
Hi Richard, really enjoyed this run through of Adam Ant's albums. I've always rated him very high. I remembering dancing and making a fool of myself to Antmusic when it came out and I still absolutely love that track. I saw him twice about 5 years ago, obviously past best but still enjoyable. I only have 3 of his albums Dirk, Prince, Kings but watching your video I am now inspired to grow my collection of AA albums. I learnt a lot from your run down, so thank you, and now I will go digging! Thanks Mike
Hi thanxs for this video about Adam Ant's work which desserve much more attention tan he's got nowdays- I've wrote a complete biography in french (im a french writer) about Adam Ant in 2016 called "Adam ant the last punkrocker" (edit camion blanc 500 pages) helas can' find any GB publishers to translate it/ such a shame coz there is no english decent book about this great and innovating artist very underrated to my mind ...
Hi Richard this was a great video as I’m not that familiar with Adam ant solo albums I actually saw a copy of that compilation with the fuzzy photo I would have bought it but it was in poor condition… cheers Richard 👍
I've seen adam live 7 times since 2013 still amazing, I've got a collection about 50 items, my favourites are kings, and vive le rock but everything he's done is amazing, got kings box set,and cd box sets, and nice record store dirk white vinyl with extras, there's only one album I've not got, marrying gunners daughter is amazing got cd and vinyl.
@@CookieMusic43 hi Richard, yes dirk white vinyl, stickers and a poster of zerox, with a few more goody's as well. Came out 2014 uk record store day a gem. Some early version of dirk had zerox on it kind regards.
Perfect timing with this one, Richard! I hadn’t listened to Adam Ant for many years, then watched a documentary a couple of years ago and learned about his mental health struggles. Decided I should get caught up, not having paid much attention since Friend Or Foe and bits of Vive Le Rock, but will admit my enthusiasm was short-lived and didn’t really stretch beyond the albums I was already familiar with. I’ll have to give Prince Charming another chance. I really didn’t like it at the time, although Stand & Deliver is certainly a favorite. I did manage to hear most of Marrying The Gunner’s Daughter, which, as you noted, is a bit generic in its production, although I enjoyed the songs. Once again, I learned a few things: Had no idea Press Darlings (a favorite) was only on the US version of Kings. Also did not realize there was an unreleased album! Don’t think I’ve heard anything from Strip, Manners & Physique, or Wonderful. Will check them out, if only to hear what he was up to during that period. Always a pleasure, Richard. Cheers from Minnesota!
Cheers E. The Prine Cahrming album is regarded as a bit of a disappointment after Kings but iit has really grown on me. Mowhak and Mile High Club are the hardest to get into but tracks like That Voodoo, Sex and Picasso Visits the Planet of the Apes are fantastic.
Great run down/top ten. I’ve been a fan since that first ToP appearance in 1980. Seen them/him a number of times and have had every released album plus some bootlegs. Everyone has their own opinion and I respect your but I would swap PC and Dirk around. I am fortunate enough to have got to know Marco and even played with him and Terry LM once. I love the early stuff but if pressed KOTWF is my fave. Gonna try and find your ranking of the singles, my top single (btw) is either Zerox or Dog Eat Dog
Thanks, Vive Le Rock is underrated although I think his most underrated is actually Prince Charming. It was seen as a bit of a disappointment after KOTWF but it's my second favourite and as you just said, it's your favourite.
I love Adam and the ants. Have a lot of their stuff but never heard of persuasion. If you know a way of getting hold of a copy i would love to hear. Same goes for Family of Noise. I didn't get the last album as I thought it was dreadful. I may get it some day but only as a completist. Car Trouble Is such a brilliant single. Still love it to this day. Great video mate. Loved every second.
Thanks! You could try typing on Adam Ant Persuasion download into google and it might take you to a torrent site but be careful, there's a lot of viruses about and of course, it's not legal lol
Hi Richard. I really need to listen to the Adam & The Ants and the one Adam Ant album I own (I also own a lot of singles), all of which were given to me a couple of years ago. They really didn't appeal to me at all when I was growing up, I don't really know why as they were clearly fun and inventive. I think I tended to stay away from anything overtly gimmicky or image-orientated (so speaks the KISS fan lol). Strange to say it, but in a way Adam Ant in the eighties was a bit like Jeff Lynne in the seventies in that he hit big with a very particular sound and style which he then got stuck with , making it hard for him to then do anything else that his fans would accept.
Which Adam Ant solo album do you have, James? The best way to re-introduce yourself is to get well pissed and let the tunes rip! I never really thought of comparing Adam to Jeff but what you says makes perfect sense.
Good job except I have to disagree with a couple choices. Perhaps because I got Wonderful when I was in love with a beautiful girl who looked like the girl from Clueless and we wore it out on a trip to Montreal from Philly. A long drive. I rank it third. And the Blue black Hussar 4th. Such a great comeback album. Punky young girl is his best work since Kings. I think the production is just fine. It's a dark album..meant to have a droning quality. What ever happened to Adam's 2018 release? Where is it?
Bravest of the Brave? I have no idea. I remember seeing an interview with Adam anround 2014/15 and he mentioned it was coming out soon but still, nothing!
Ha ha, I inspired a video. OK, here is my thoughts further on that album that you know the title by heart :) - first four tracks sounds great, then it goes into oddity for me with the way the vocals are done on Valentines, Darlin' Boy, and then it stay messy sounding, until the odd vocals that drive me crazy come back in Cradle Your Hated. But track 11 thru the end is pretty normal, with only an occasional oddity that grates on me. So, it is really mainly tracks 5 thru 10, especially the ones with the droning, totally off key background vocals, and the moaning, strange background vocals, that bother me and make it hard to get past and to the rest of the record. I need to shuffle them in a playlist, move 5-10 to the end, and see how I feel about the album as a whole. :) I should do a response video - "My Adam Ant Ranking and Why Richard is Wrong" - ha ha. Maybe we should have done a collaboration video ranking and discussing, that would have been fun I bet. At least our #1 matches. Hey, that Family of Noise album, is that available to you locally still? It seems since it is unofficial, no one can sell it on Discogs, and I am not finding it on eBay.
Hi Jeff, it's the sign of a brilliant artist when the fans cannot agree on the order of the greatest of their output. The Family of Noise album was bought from ebay a few years ago. I haven't seen it advertised since unfortunately.
