Finnish is actually not so complex. Sure, there are more cases than in most languages, but everything else in the grammar is pretty logical, without the huge amount of exceptions or irregular verbs like in some major languages. The sense of difficulty comes from having so DIFFERENT structure than English, Russian or other Indo-European languages.
Let's say that your spoken Finnish sounds much more fluent than my English. Good job!
You may have noticed that as an American, it's kind of difficult to learn Finnish through conversations since almost every Finnish person starts speaking English automatically with you because they want to be polite and would like to improve their English skills as well.
I noticed this phenomenon myself while studying in high school. We had two exchange students: one from the United States and one from Japan. At the end of the exchange year, the situation was that the American barely knew the basics of Finnish, but the Japanese student, on the other hand, was able to have some conversation in the Finnish language.
Why did it turn out like that? Well, everyone primarily spoke English with the American student, but nobody spoke Japanese, and the Japanese student's English skills weren't particularly strong to begin with.
So, she didn't really have any other option but to learn to speak Finnish, as this was way before smartphones and AI translators.
@nikke2404 I think you’re right! Americans are so lucky that the world’s universal language just happens to be English. The downside is we know we don’t ever have to learn any other languages and usually we easily get by when traveling abroad.

Your Finnish is excellent. Just start using it more in everyday situations to make it more like routine.
It is funny to see and hear how a person's whole voice and even facial expressions change when speaking a different language. The same thing happens to me every time.
Personally I feel awkward when speaking English for the first time after a longer break, even though my English is not terrible by any means.
I can't even imagine what would it be like to make a video in English. It feels awkward enough hearing my own voice on video in Finnish!

Luke Bland The key for being fluent in a language is using it, regardless of the mistakes and imperfections.
Your accent is almost native level. Öljy seemed to be the hardest word to pronounce for you.

Your pronunciation is near perfect, hardly any accent. Grammatical errors happen, but that's expected, even Finns are sometimes confused about their own grammar :D

Just remember that it's important for the child that the parents speak their mother tongue to them! Your mother tongue will always remain more rich, and also the language of your heart (you can better express non-concrete or language-depend "things of the mind" by your mother tongue). And just be patient while learning Finnish ;)

I'm jealous of your ability to speak Finnish, Luke. Because my ability right now is limited to only a few simple phrases and a lot of swear words 😅 That being said, I just returned from a couple of weeks in Helsinki with my (Finnish) friends. One day, I woke up with a phrase in my head. I excitedly opened my phone to translate it - what could it mean?
The phrase was: Mitä vittua.
I'm sure you know that one 😏 But I was still proud!
Can you offer any tips for learning Finnish BEFORE arriving in Helsinki? I'm still waiting on Duolingo for an English>Finnish course. Their language incubator suggests it won't be ready until a year from now (April 2020). That's too far away for me.

Clearly you've became a genuine finn! Because finnish people are always so shy speaking foreign language if they feel they're not fluent at it. Your finnish is just fine! Your pronunciation is excellent and even though some words and prepositions aren't completely right it's easy to understand what you're saying.
My family and I were in Finland for 3 weeks in the Summer, and in the six months prior to the trip I worked quite hard to learn some of the language. I consider myself to be a terrible Finnish language speaker, so it's with some authority that I can say you were amazing. You were downright conversational! Well done.
That didn't come out right at all. If I had seen you talking to someone in Finnish in downtown Espoo I would have thought you were well versed in the language.
