  • Merry Christmas! This is the last video of the year, and I am sharing the reasons why I am still actively shooting with Micro Four Thirds, and still love the system today, after 10 years of using it since 2013's Olympus OM-D E-M1.

    If ever anybody doubted Robins credibility then the fact he continues to shoot M43 when there is litetally nothing to stop him switching brands, should put that to rest. Even after leaving Olympus' ambassador-ship he still staunchly believes in the benefits M43 can bring. So not only has he shown impressive photography skills but also that he is a genuine guy. Look forward to more of the same in 2024 Robin 👍

      @@stevemadden7319 this was your original comment:
      "You bought it though 😊
      I'm sure I've just watched your video saying you're staying with the OM-1"
      No, I did not buy it. You were wrong.
      And, I did not say I am staying with OM-1. I said, I am staying with Micro Four Thirds, BIG BIG difference man.
      Please don't put words into my mouth.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@stevemadden7319 also, did you even bother watching this video at all? At which point did I mention I used the OM-1?

      @robinwong  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@stevemadden7319 what amnesia? You said two things which were clearly wrong, and you did not even want to admit that you were wrong. Let me say them again. You said I bought it. I said I did not. You said I am "staying with OM-1". I said nothing of that sort. I have no love for OM-1 and I will have no regrets if it was run over by a bus.

    Had an E-M1 Mk2 and GX8 some years back. Went full frame (Sony a7R4, Canon R5, Sony a7c). Then APS-C (Fuji X-H2). Back with MFT (OM-1, G9 Mk2). The overall MFT experience can’t be beaten - pure fun.

    If I had a wish for Micro Four Thirds(since I am an Olympus/OMDS shooter) I would appreciate it if they would turn their focus onto portrait photography and street photography. They advanced already in macro and wildlife, its time to adventure into other genres. Re do all the 1.8 primes, maybe make them weather sealed or make them f1.4's. 📸🎁🎄🎅🏻🧑🏻‍🎄

      Merry Christmas from Utah USA and best wishes to all of the Robin Wong MFT community for the coming New Year!!. New cameras and new capabilities will be great but I still have so much depth in the features of my OM system gear to explore. I mostly use the EM 1 mkIII with the 12-100 Pro.. the way those two work together is just amazing! I'm going to say it though.. I would love a high capability modernized rangefinder style body. Keep shooting Robin..we'll be watching.

      Yes, the system is really great for street photography and portrait photography , a shame they only focus on wildlife photograhy nowadays. As if every photographer has a mountain or a couple of lions or eagles in it’s backyard. They forget most people just want to make good photo’s of their children or their travels - both subjects the m43 system is particulary good at.

    Hi Robin, I rarely comment on videos but I have to say how much I love this one! I have been a serious photographer for 20 years. When I say "serious", I mean a collector of bodies and lenses from 4x5 film to pinhole cameras to DSLRs and APS-C... you name it, I have probably owned it. I love cameras so much but for me, it's about the beauty of holding them, operating them and of course, seeing the final image.
    Recently, I looked back at some of my earlier street photography photos. Before I bought the Ricoh GR in 2013, I was shooting with an Olympus e-p2 and the 17mm 1.8. And you know, just looking back at those photos I couldn't believe how wonderful they were! At that time of life I call "before Fujifilm", I had never felt so nimble! The camera just got out of my way and let me photograph what I saw. With all the advances since then, there's too much effort in setting the camera up and all the bells and whistles and so...
    Last year when deciding if I would upgrade my Fuji x-T30ii to a Sony, I turned back to M/43. Because of your channel and Emily's channel (Micro Four Nerds), I felt compelled to try to seek out that feeling again that is so unique to the system. I picked up the Panasonic GX9 and went on a trip to Toronto. These were some of my all-time favorite images! I soon started accumulating lenses.
    This week I will receive in the mail an excellent condition the Oly EM-1 II and a 75-300mm lens to test it against my Fuji XH2S and Tamron 150-500mm on travels. I am keeping my expectations low, but I am hoping that shooting with this set up will bring me as much joy as my GX9 does.
    Thank you for all you do for the M43 community!

    I use Sony A7S III and A7R3A both for photo+video ... for the "beauty" shots during weddings. But I use the Panasonic G9 + Leica lenses for capturing 70% of the wedding day. I just love Micro Four Thirds !

  • @donaldbate3017

    Excellent video Robin! I have recently returned to M43 after years of various Fuji and full frame systems, for all the reasons you stated. What finally convinced me was a recent cycle tour of Tasmania, lugging along a Panasonic S1R & 100-400 wildlife lens. Technically brilliant kit, but in practice just a pain. By the time I saw a scene or critter, parked my bike, opened the rear pannier, pulled out the camera, taken off the cap, reversed the hood.. well, you get the idea, either I just couldn't be bothered or the bird had flown away!
    Now, a GX8 with 50-100 zoom is so compact it fits in my front handlebar pannier all ready to go! I don’t even have to dismount my bike, just grab and shoot! The fun of cycling with a camera has revitalised tenfold, now I get the shots, and I will never go back to a bigger system.

It's my first and only interchangeable lens system mainly because learning to use different lenses on any system is something people take for granted. No worries, it was the word first used by my friend "Ming Thein" during blogging days, which I also adopted on my own philosophy when it comes to gear. A lot of people don't talk about sufficiency enough, they just want to chase the latest and greatest.

      Ditto, started with the Lumix GX80/85 and progressed up to the OM-1 so far. Sometimes I think I'd try FF for the low light performance, but I don't think I'd give up the ease of lugging the equivalent of 840mm along the deer trails, and even shoot it handheld...

    Hy Robin, Your passion and professionalism help me a lot to chose between many gear out there. I begin my digital potography with Olympus e-510 in 2007. I after switching to Canon 7D, Canon 6d (full frame) and Sony A7 II. I came back again for a back-up body, with Olympus M5 m II mainly because of his small body and lens size. It became my main camera because of it's reliability and the possibilty to bring up with me the camera every where and take a lot more photos! I have now the Olympus em1 m III and still enjoy this camera. So please do'nt give up, and happy new year!

    I have been trying different models from Olympus and Panasonic MFT and none of them were disappointing me in terms of quality and the price in second hand market is quite affordable for a hobbyist like me. I am also trying to enter into Fujifilm X but the only benefits I can see is the sensor size.

    Another reason that is true for me and I see for you I bet for a lot of people, is that these cameras are actually fun and enjoyable to use. I converted from Nikon FF to MFT in early 2017 with the Em1 MkII. That camera is almost 7 years old and I still love it. I have since added a MkIII and an OM1 and have quite a few lens Oly Pro, Panny Leica and some vintage lenses. I never see any problems with image quality and love what I am getting in a large variety of situations, so I never get why people are so caught up with how much better the IQ is on larger sensors. I have made some really big enlargements with no problems. I love your videos Robin! Happy New Year and I look forward to seeing you in 2024.

    Great video, and great point. Some people get so caught up with the latest and greatest camera that they forget to make the most of the gear they have already. I bought a GH5 II last year, because it was cheaper than the GH6, and more than sufficient for what I needed. All modern cameras are amazing, and, by now, the quality of the image / video is more down to the talent behind the camera, rather than the camera itself.

    My favorite part was the "truly enjoyable system" section of the video -- almost brought a tear to my eye, you can tell how much you love m4/3!! I feel the same way. It's just a fun system to use, and every time I've been somewhere shooting, people are curious about my gear -- I think it's because they cameras have a unique vibe/look... retro, without trying to be too overly retro! I've been shooting Olympus gear forever and still use my trusty E-1 (one of the greatest DSLRs EVER made!!!) How many Canikons from 2003 are still in use???? Probably not many, and that's a testament to the quality of the old Olympus gear. I also have an E-30 from 2008 -- still works perfectly! Now I mostly use my EM-10MII with the tasty little Panny f1.7 prime. So small, and the images are STELLAR!!!
    And... can we all agree that Robin is the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) when it comes to TH-cam photography channels???!! There's no doubt about it!! Happy New Year, Robin!!

It’s one of my very favorite cameras and I have lot of full frame cameras like the Sony A1 Sony 87R5 Nikon Z9 Nikon ZF canon 62 Fuji five, and I am digging all the in camerastuff on the OM one like focus stacking. It is amazing all in Camera thank you for your channel.

    Merry Christmas Robin! You nailed it on this video. I have been a professional photographer since 1976 and have used many different systems over the years. I use the Olympus / OMDS system for 95% of my work (I also have the Fujifilm GFX 100 II / 50s along with GF lenses for certain client projects which require that gear), and when I am reaching for a camera for my personal work, it's the Pen-F! I love the M43 glass with the amazing range and choice we have available, which is unmatched in any other system. I am happy that there are many manufacturers producing cameras to allow all photographers to find the right tool and fit for their creative endeavors too. Wishing you a healthy and prosperous 2024!

    Sadly Robin, I decided to jump ship to Sony Full Frame after 2 years with M4/3. I am increasingly disappointed in the new releases and direction OM System is taking the platform and the cost advantage seems to be slowly shrinking. That OM1 Mkii is as expensive as a Canon r6 Mkii, Sony A7 iv, etc. and I don't see the extra value. I do believe there is still some magic in the platform, especially from the older lenses and bodies, but I want a system I can put my full weight into for years to come. You are such an important person in the M4/3 community and one of the joys in being in the platform! I did buy you a cup of coffee to express my gratitude! I'll still watch your videos, because I watch for you and not for the platform. Cheers!

    My MFT gear travels everywhere with me and has created so many amazing prints and photo albums of my family's vacations. The 8-25 f/4 zoom is an incredible optic for landscapes all the way through everyday documentary style shooting and it's balanced perfectly with the E-M1 and OM-1 bodies. I shoot Canon R6 and RF lenses for events and most professional work, but Olympus is my go to for everything else! If I had a wishlist from the MFT brands it would be for a street photography oriented camera with the latest sensor and menus from either OM or Panasonic (PEN-F or GX9 successor) with a 2-axis tilt screen like Fuji uses. That would be the unbeatable street machine 💪

    Thank you Robin fot this video. My first camera was Olympus e410 and since then I was loyal to 4/3 and m4/3 system and of course I had doubts if m4/3 will have a future. But when I was shooting I was telling myself that I don't need a 50+megapixels and I do enjoy this system because of how small and good quality lenses are and the weight for the whole system. And I am glad and very happy with my m4/3 system and I am also glad that Panasonic and OM system are making new stuff, just what they need to do is make another G80/E-M5 that will be priced reasonably and will be packed with tech.

    My reasons why I have chosen MFT system: (I have used Olympus Pen cameras and M.Zuiko lenses.)
    1. Light weight and SMALL size. It's easy to carry the gear around.
    2. There are many CHEAP Micro 3/4 cameras and lenses too. I don't have thousands of euros to use for cameras and lenses.
    3. These cameras and lenses are very DURABLE and good quality. I have used them ten years without any bigger issues yet.
    4. These cameras and lenses are also very GOOD LOOKING. Giving some enjoyment even when you are not using them. 🙂
    5. Number of available lenses for MFT cameras is huge. Olympus, Panasonic and many third party manufacturers.
    6. Old lenses can be used too with adapters, which is very interesting and fun, and cheap.

    The question we all must always ask ourselves before buying ANY gear is "what do I NEED for my own creative process?". If a 5 year old camera or smaller sensor will do everything you need, and it saves you a ton of money... That's the answer (unless you have unlimited funds!)
    Robin poses an excellent question... At what point are you just going to appreciate what you have, and focus on making great images? I would say MOST camera buyers just have a gear obsession and buy gear which far outweighs their needs or talent. They spend more time watching TH-cam videos about new gear and planning their next purchase than actually shooting any pictures (don't deny it, we've all been there!).
    That's why most 'photography' channels only talk about gear and not actually shooting and improving as a photographer... Because that's all people care about. It's quite sad.
    My only issue with M43 is they lost their way with regard to what made the system special. I had an original Lumix GX-1 back in 2012 (followed by a GX9 and a G9). It was literally pocket size, giving professional image quality, had a detachable EVF and the lenses were tiny of course... Which made an incredible camera to always have in your pocket! THAT is the type of camera they need to bring back as for me that was the whole point of the system.
    Making bodies which are the same size as full frame cameras just seems to defeat the point, especially when Sony are also managing to make full frame lenses increasingly smaller, lighter and third party glass is so cheap. The weight penalty is so small now, unless you're carrying your entire kit up a mountain... It becomes hard to argue why you would make any compromises unless you just have more fun with a M43 system.
    I will say, I always recommend a M43 system to beginner wildlife photographers... A G9 with a beautiful compact zoom is a sensational package for birding with results that can't be beat at the price point.
    For me, personally, when full frame systems have become so cheap and compact, I just couldn't justify M43 for my needs, but I'll always love the system and I hope it's around forever... I will buy another M43 camera, and I just PRAY they'll bring back truly pocket-size cameras which offer something which full frame can't.
    Apologies, that spiralled and became a lot longer than I planned...

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeap, agree that we all have different gear needs and buy what works for us best. I don't disagree with you about full frame systems becoming lower in price and more compact these days. Indeed Micro Four Thirds is losing their advantage fast. More reasons for OM Digital Solutions and Panasonic to buckle up fast and start pushing their boundaries sooner than later. They need to get serious, or soon be lost in their own game.

  • @peterpanimg
    @peterpanimg 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Nicely said Robin. I hear you. I bought my Canon m100 few years ago, as it was the cheapest (that's all I could afford), and a publication suggested this was a recommended entry level camera. I have not even pushed it to it's max, but still there would be times of post purchase dissonance. Eventually I added something that is the absolute real power of this system, ef-m 22mm. This one lens completely changed the experience and delight I started getting out of my camera. I can take my camera to cafe's in the evening, and get the kind of shots that I like. For all these years, I have stuck with very basic image editing (just crops and basic adjustments) in PC, or snapseed on phone. Now I am hoping to get a software that can help manage noise even better.
    I have matured as an enthusiast watching sensible content from you and others, and I realize the complete ecosystem one possesses is what makes a good photographer/publisher. I really admire the MFT system, hopefully I get a chance to experience this.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The Canon mirrorless that you have is a great camera, and that 22mm pancake is a wonderful lens. You are right about a system, it is not just a single lens or camera, but you have to look at the system as a whole.

    I think the OM1 almost sits at the boundary of where the benefits of M4/3 starts to fade. The Oldest weighs almost 500 grams, and the newest is at 580g, where the A7C weighs 509g. The other thing is that a f1.8 M4/3 lens is really like a f3.6 full frame lens for example. If you get a 1.8 lens for FF, yes it’ll be much larger, but there are definitely much lighter lenses like Samyang 2.8, or the new g primes are very small and light. So let’s say you have a EM1 III at 580g and a 20mm 1.7 pancake. This combo weighs in at 680g, while a Sony a7c with the 40mm 2.5 would weigh 682 g but would have a slight f stop advantage (2.5 vs 3.4 equivalent).
    I think the EM5 and below is where you still get the size benefit, weighing in the low 400 g. I’m kind of wanting to try one at some point as I’ve been trying to downsize and simplify my camera system, as I have realized what I like to shoot and decided I don’t want to do it professionally.

    I completely agree. I use a Panasonic Lumix GX8 and an Olympus E-M5 iii for most of my photography - especially for concert/event photography, and I'm very happy with the results.
    In fact this Christmas I was gifted an old Leica Digilux 3 four thirds camera. I only started using it today, but even a camera that old delivers RAW files with so much data and potential, it confirms, that the sensor size is not a problem.
    I love the size of the micro four thirds lenses and cameras. I can walk around a crowded concert venue with a small shoulder bag with extra lenses and my two work horse cameras hanging around my neck - one with a wide angle fast prime and one with a longer fast prime (the Olympus 45mm f1.8) with ease. No weight issues, no big camera/lenses getting in the way, when I move from one ideal photography spot to another - and I get great shots.
    I recently picked up a non-Olympus/Panasonic MFT lens - the Sigma 30mm f1.4. It's slightly bigger and a little heavy, but I really look forward to trying it out the next time I get to do some concert photography, because so far I'm really impressed with the results I have been getting.

    I hope you had a great Christmas, Robin, and THANK YOU for the awesome videos over the years. A few years back I bought an E-PM1 and soon found out I disliked all the menu diving that was neccessary and lack of a grip. I traded it recently for a 1.1 because of the features and the grip for longer lenses. I plan on getting either the 1.2 or 1.3 next year. Just tonight I have been watching your videos and setting my 1.1 for better images and use. Priceless info!! Shoot the system as long as you love and enjoy it, that's what really matters.

    The "good enough" point is worth highlighting. For what I do, I don't need more megapixels or bigger sensors.
    Also, for some stuff, smaller is better. Larger sensors will always have less potential for effective stabilization. Meanwhile, I was able to achieve 8 and even 10 second handheld exposures on my OM-1.

  • @Sven-R
    @Sven-R 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I'm happy with my Panasonic G9 and I have no intention to switch systems. When I first bought this system with the G3 it was a lot because of the price - I didn't want to spend thousands into my first system. I sticked to it as it was always very convenient and the number of lenses I have now (Yes, G.A.S., I know...) would not be possible with full frame systems without selling a kidney. I always smile when people tell me about other systems and their advantages. In the end the results are what counts. And I am not the greatest photographer in the world, but others with the latest and greatest aren't as well and my progress will come with practice, not with different gear.

    been itching to try a different system, despite mainly a m43rds user but i cant help trying either Sony, Canon, Nikon or Fuji as a second body with its own purpose and all rounder.
    dont get me wrong i love the compact telephoto lens m43rds offers but id feel complete with an accompanying slightly bigger or full frame sensor body for everything else walkabout setup.
    it won't stop me from watching your enthusiasm and loyalty to it all, because time to time there's definitely things i haven't even tried or learned about making full potential of the sensor system

  • @yukonchris
    @yukonchris 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hi Robin, Well, you might be a more effective m43rds promoter, but are you the biggest? Some of us are probably just as passionate. I've been using Olympus gear since the four-thirds days, and I've been using micro four-thirds almost since it was introduced. In fact, I am still shooting primarily with my original OM-D E-M1 Mk I. Like you, I have also tried other cameras and I even purchased a Canon 7D back in the day, and more recently, a Canon EOS R to which I have mounted some native RF glass and a number of adapted EF lenses saved from my 7D days. All that said, I almost always shoot with the older E-M1.
    The reasons why I generally chose my Olympus E-M1 over the much newer EOS R correspond closely to the reasons you gave in your video. Light weight gear, superb lenses, and reliability. That said, I also love the image quality, and the camera's ergonomics, and interface design. The Canons are good cameras too, but if I could only have one, it wouldn't even be a close contest--I'm keeping the Olympus gear!
    As a camera nerd, I've tossed around the idea of trading the Canon in on a Nikon or Sony, but in the end, I suspect that I would still prefer my micro four-thirds experience. Anyway, thanks for the great video as usual. We do need system promoters like you to keep up interest in the system. That said, I'm not unhappy that the "full-frame" marketing hype is so effective because I kind of like having a superb OM system that is just a little bit exotic! Cheers.

    Merry Xmas Robin ! I totally agree with you : images are made to be PRINTED ! And a good printed image has nothing to do with the specs of the camera (except for some very large detailed prints). Hanging a framed photo on a wall is an experience that computer display viewing cannot replace.
    Regarding m43 and olympus... I bought my first Olympus (OM10 film camera in the late 70's and still have OM4's for film photography) ! m43 has few cons and so many pros ! Size, reliability, compatibility, versatility (my brand new OM-1 is still nicely compatible with former FT SWD Zuiko Digital lenses), one can adapt almost all lenses to m43 (viantge, russian, OM analog lenses, etc).
    I'm a kind of "extrem" photographer as I have on one side my OM-1 with all kind of lenses to attach to it (the newest one is a Leica Lumix 1.4 25mm first generation...) and on the other side a p65+ Phase One MF system with lenses from Mamyia, Hasselblad, etc to do some job I can only do with a big sensor. Same thing on film : compact and very efficient OM4s bodies with a nice set of lenses and on the other side A Hasselblad V 6x6 system (when I bought it something like 10 years ago it only costed me 450 US dollars with the 80mm...). What I can't do with m43 I do it with the Phase One system. No interest in APS-C and FF systems : they don't have the advantages of the m43 nor the MF cameras. They are for sure excellent cameras but too big and do not have the advantages of a real big MF 16 bits sensor.
    Long life to m43 ! Hoping that OM System will continue the wonderful job Oly did.
