The Cleveland Agora Ballroom was the premier venue for new acts breaking onto the scene. Toto, Foreigner, Southside Johnny, and Bruce Springsteen are just a few. The manager of the club was a music fixture in Cleveland, a fine drummer and lead singer for groups like Rainbow Canyon and Charade. They even wrote a few songs picked up by Sly and the Family Stone. And as you can tell, the club was set up with great acoustics. What I can't fathom is how it came to be broadcast in Japan. I was there for both concerts that night, 2/2/79, and Toto absolutely blew everyone away.
@@drumsport thanks for this review wow 20+ years later incredible !! Watching Jeff Porcaro having the time of his life belting the drums in the backround is worth its weight in gold Just a frikin outstanding performance
I simply have forgotten how good they were and sounded. Kimball at his height sounds amazing, what a singer. Paich plays and sings unbelievably well. Jeff Porcaro the best drummer of them all. Lukather is playing like there is no tomorrow, one of the best guitar players of all time. Steve Porcaro is great too. David Hungates bass out of this world. Tom Kelly on rhythm guitar and amazing backing vocals is simply outstanding. Lenney Castro on perc and backing Vocals is unbelievable. What a stellar line up.
My brothers and I were there. February 2, 1979. Stood outside in line for 2 hours in 20 degree cold. The first Toto tour in support of the release of their first album. There were two show that night, and we were astonished at both for their brightness and tightness. Jeff was something to behold. RIP.
I still remember the first time hearing this track on an album oriented FM station way back in the day, as a child, and I was hooked on TOTO forever. Epic music, fond memories! And what a masterful live performance!!!
I saw them back in the day at the Starwood in Hollywood and they opened with this song and I remember my exact first thought ... "HOLY SHIT! these guys are great! "
From the early of the earliest days when the band rocked big time. All accomplished session players who thought hey, why dont we give this a go ourselves? Ive always loved the first album before it became more corporate? but to be at this concert would have been insane fun as you can see the guys are having a good time
TOTO at its best (i regret to be born in 1975 because i missed TOTO early live performance !! ) I'm a fan of Mike Porcaro but i consider the first TOTO "team" as the golden age for the band Steve Lukather was like Alien in the Nostromo ship of rock....the UFO guitarist :))

They really put out in Japan... they also were really excellent at this time... later their vocals weren't so good 😊.... they were such great musicians and the band was so into it...
I love watching these bands when they just started out, before all the fame, money, groupies, and lawyer-protected bad habits took hold. Love seeing the power of guys who look at each other and say, f k were playing the Hollywood Bowl, before it became, ah, f k where playing that place again:?
They were great once, when Bobby’s voice was Fab! Sadly, he pretty much lost his edge, IMHO.... Maybe if he would try to keep his head more level or O’Dowd some instead of stretched upward, he would strain to get the higher notes now...
if at one point of life anyone wants to make a film or a movie about TOTO and try to find an actor to make bobby pedro pascal has the same fucking vibes XDD
I don't know who he is this was the time THIS record came out i was hooked on TOTO loved every record it's strange our music took us to the sunset strip all around there i found myself in some fancy famous places and some weird places blows vill every where bad SEEN. Man had to leave that band it. Was a smart move but TOTO shure played to the bone love em man a bunch
Sushi 🍣 and sashimi is on sale at the commissary and blow fish 🐟 is being served - slaughtered in front of you... I think that's what the Japanese guy was saying... Wasabi very spicy 🌶 tonight!
God damn. Whoever was the audio engineer on this show did a spectacular job. With all these instruments on stage, you can hear each one crystal clear.

This is a monumental show and is disgustingly underappreciated.
A lot of Toto is, sadly. especially in the US
This band 79 is when i TOLD Montrose the BULLSHIT clubs and fake songs.........iam done i DID GET to biz on that music all my OWN thanks to TOTO
Very proggy. Hydra is probably the most proggy of their albums.
From their best album, in my opinion. What an outstanding live performance!
Agreed that recording holds huge weight up until this day !
❤❤❤❤
Agreed, Kimball singing GIRL GOODBYE is what made me a huge fan of the band since the first album in 1978. @@scottwohlers9422
RIP Jeff, you were a God, on the drums
Absolutely!
Best studio drummer of all time
Bobby Kimball is just a god.
Well, back then he WAS. Unfurtunetly not anymore. Lost his voice control completely...
No he was blessed by God
Best Toto Singer ever...
@@djLouisLoop he's 73
@@wickedartist1451 He was forced out of the band due to cocaine after Toto IV.
No wonder they won so many awards. WOW!
Having the great Lenny Castro in this band made the rhythm section even better. He is completely locked in with Jeff.
All while dangling a ciggy - badass!
Probably my favorite live performance ever
David Hungate epic on Bass
Laying in bed at 10:30pm in 2023 and when that song ended I had to fight the temptation to jump up and cheer 🙌🏻🙌🏻👏👏 such a great performance! ❤

Toto will always be my favorite band.
I was there on that cold February night but it was smoking hot in the Agora!! Fabulous show!!!
Tiberious, did the band hang with the audience afterward?
Unfortunately I can’t answer that. Had to leave right after the show. But I don’t believe they did.
Best live show they ever did
This is spectacular!
Loved Toto. Memories of my last days in the United States Marine Corps after 6 yrs (73-79) I wore this album (cassette) out. Semper Fi
I cant stop watching this! What a smoking live performance...god damn.
Damn, folks really knew how to sound good live back then huh? And the mix is surprisingly fantastic for VHS.
There is so much energy, incredible music! Bobby great!
❤❤❤❤
This is my favorite live version yet!
Probably my favorite Toto song.
Me too love to return to 1979, be 24 yrs old and have my long hair.
Absolutely my favorite Toto song.
Same here although I am more interested when it's Bobby not the singer(s) after him performing the origina firstl 4 albums.
Every version of Toto is stellar.
Bobby is an absolute BEAST!!!
Lovin' me some TOTO...
Bobby Kimball....Toto´s VOICE
This is Toto!
Lenny Castro on congas...good God.

This is where we need to go back too, musically and socially as well. What's happening to us?
Can't get enough of this song, it rocks.
That's the great session drummer Lenny Castro on conga drums.
Does Lenny play kit too?

Does anyone have the non japanese talking version?
Why talking trash, thus spoiling the show? Now as always before and through eons yet to come?
Directed towards the commentator.
Is there a version of this without the talking over the instrumental? It ruins the “lost in the sauce” vibe!
Who's that on rythmn guitar?
who is that drummmer /? I'm sorry ,, that you left us so soon

Am I the only one who hate the japanese voice over Bobby's scream?
