I've just ordered a set of Stringjoy Foxwoods for my Lowden F32. I'm at present using Martin Lifespans, but I'd like to try the Foxwoods and also I'm going up a gauge, a bit of experimentation. I've been using D'Addario's for the longest time and decided to try some different stuff. Love the videos, informative and fun.

I absolutely love Stringjoy joy strings. I have been using stringjoy strings for a long time now. I play electric 12 string guitar. I use signatures 10 to 48 on my electric and the naturals 10 to 50 on my Taylor acoustic 355 12 string. I'm spoiled now,Stringjoy strings are the only strings my guitars get. So try Stringjoy and you may never go back to store bought strings again, unless they sale Stringjoy strings there. My strings are sent to me automatically every three months. I changed my last set 2 months after the strings arrived, and they still were able to be played on a gig. Love my STRINGJOY STRINGS!! I DO WIPE MY STRINGS DOWN AFTER PLAYING.

D'Addario XS have become my favorites. I tried the XT's & they didn't last long at all. Same with EXP, though EXP sound better than the XT & XS, but don't last nearly as long. For me, feel wise, and longevity the XS have smoked everything! Slides & bends feel so good with them and they went 5+ months with about a 1.5 hour per day playing time. XS sound great, I just feel that they might be a little bit quieter than other strings. Excited to try the Stringjoys out & if they make it 5+ months, sound as good or better than the XS, and also feel as good as the XS, then I will be super stoked.

What’s you’re take on the fox woods now, 7 months later, how long did they end up lasting for you.
I ordered some when they came out a while back and just finally got though my hoard of strings to get them on my daily driver the middle of last month.
I just ran across you’re video and I agree about the feel and all I’m just interested to see how they hold up over time. I’ve heard of people who got the first run of them leaving them on for a year or more without changing them out and they still weren’t tarnished.
The one thing I have to say is that for the first couple of weeks they made my fingers feel like they did when I first started playing.
To me they felt a bit sharp, maybe that’s not the right word for it.. but my fingers hurt for about 2 weeks. Now they feel just like anything else.
I was making beer the day I swapped them out as well so I Imagin it could be possible that the acid in the star-San might have softened my calluses who knows.. but I’ve been buying from stringjoy since they started out and I love them. I’ve bounced around from time to time to try other strings but I always come back to them. I think that says something about their quality and customer service which are both outstanding.

I have Stringjoy Signatures Balanced Lights (10/48) on every electric guitar I own. My son and I also have their acoustic strings on all our acoustics. They make a reasonably priced, high quality, product. Their customer service is exceptional, and they're a small business. I've never liked coated strings, but i'm willing to give these a shot based on the possibility that they feel more natural and my past experience with the company.

Love the service and if someone email’s them with questions, they don’t hesitate to get back to you with a reply!!! They will also make custom sets and or suggestions on string sizes depending on what type of music you play and how you play! Awesome!!

Good Video! IMO, there is no "best" string. Strings that sound great on one guitar can often sound not so good on another guitar. It also depends on what type of playing you do and the venue. In some cases a better sounding string (to you) might not sound good as long for as you wanted to. For example, I use Elixir nano webs on my Gibson Hummingbird because they sound pretty good on it - playing 3-4 gigs/week. Many of my gigs are outdoors and I have been rained on many times. Non coated strings, if they get wet, go totally dead by the next day. Coated strings don't have a problem with that. Yes, "the show must go on" so the H-bird has been rained on quite a bit!
As is often noted, you have to try out strings and see what works best for you in your situation. Also, if you play amplified, the string choice doesn't really matter all that much because you can EQ the guitar for whatever sound you want.
Re your comment about how bad elixirs are - I totally disagree. Never had a problem with tuning stability or any of the issues you mentioned and, for regular giggings, their lifespan is useful. I have no issue changing strings as often as is necessary but prefer less changing as opposed to more changing. With "normal" strings I have to change them every couple of weeks; the Elixers can manage a month or more. If they get wet, regular strings just go "Thud" the next day. The elixirs ignore the wet.
I'm not pushing Elixers; I only use them on my gig guitar, not on my "stay home" or studio guitars. I use Daddarios and Martin strings on those, alternating between them on my "indoor" guitars - several Martins, a Guild and a couple of Ovations.
Yeah, I know some folks tell me to use the Ovations if they might get rained on as opposed to the Hummingbird but the Gibson is MY gig guitar - so it has to deal with the weather if I'm outdoors. As a plug for the Gibson, it's been VERY wet on a few occasions and has shown no sign of distress at all...in contrast to my AER amplifier! ;)
I mentioned alternating between string brands - FWIW, I found that using the same strings all the time does not bring out the best in an acoustic guitar. Alternating string brands seems to result in better sound. I "discovered" this a long time ago. Other musicians I worked with said I was nuts. So I was pleased to recently see a Tommy Emmanuel video where he said the same thing! :)

I recently bought two sets of Stringjoy 13-56g ( phosphor bronze) and fitted them on my Martin HD28 and Larrivee OM40R - they sound amazing, in fact my guitars have never sounded as good. Very interested to see what Stringjoy have done with their coated strings. Speaking personally, on most other brands ( eg D’Addario XS, XT, Cleartone ,Wyres etc) I find the low end suffers greatly from the coating , I,e. they quickly become dull and mushy.

Yes to do a comprehensive string test you need to use them until they need to be changed to understand how good and how expensive they truly are.

I found when doing a quick fret cleaning by loosening strings to move out of the way that when i tuned them back up you could see where the string had previously been in contact with the fret, it was frayed. Just on the contact points. They were elixr brand. I don't know if that happens with all of them as I'm pretty new to the party of coated strings. Didn't seem like the coating was holding up 100% and the strings were not very old at all.

The XTs are corroded after a day for me, the Elixirs are the only strings I tried that lasted more than a day. Hoping the Stringjoy ones last as long. Do you know if any of them are coated on the unwound strings?

Thanks for sharing this info. I appreciate your take. I have tried Elixirs in the past and do not like them. Because my strings don't corrode quicky, it does not make sense to me to pay double for strings that don't have the feel I like.
Quite honestly I did not hear a significant difference between the different sets of strings.

I love elixir tone on my koa guitar but not how they play. The Daddarios were clearly different (new vs old) and Elixirs last 5 months for me. I might try Stringjoy. Idk, when the tone is right I play my best so Elixirs have stayed so far.

Hey man. Nice video. I play fingerstyle and have been trying to get away from Elixir. I have tried several. Elixir sounds great on my Furch guitar for about a week. Then , they go flat. I do not understand the hype with them at all. My hands are not overly oily or anything and I always put my guitar in the case. I have been curious about the Stringjoy Foxwoods, and in this video, to me they sound the best.

I play about 150 gigs a year with my acoustic guitar. I used D'Addario EXPs exclusively for the past couple years. Since they've been discontinued and replaced by the XTs, i've started searching for new strings. I find the XTs lacking something the EXPs had and are a couple dollars more per pack. The XS strings are good but more similar to Elixirs in my opinion. Also, they're about $6/pack more than the EXPs where I live. That adds up when you go through 50-60 sets of strings per year. Hopefully the Stringjoys give me what i'm looking for and then I can find them in bulk. I've been playing DR Dragon Skins for the past while and they're the best price/quality string i've found thus far.

Glad this video came out. I have a 2011 Ovation Applause AE128 super shallow that came with D'Addario coated 12 EXP's. Ovation recently went with Adamas strings. I tried a set of Elixir Nanwebs and didn't like them (story behind those are they were free when I bought a Squier Affinity & they were tucked inside the pouch of the gig bag). So that leaves me with going back to D'Addario and I'm fine with it. But I'd also like to see what else is out there just the same. The sounds of any of them aren't the difference to me, I think they are all fine in that regard. It's the feel of the strings for play.

    • @jimcamp2423
      @jimcamp2423 2 ปีที่แล้ว

BTW, $ 14.90 for the Foxwoods. Those eliminated themselves on MSRP alone. For expendables like strings, nobody makes $ 15+ strings that I would buy. But you did keep MSRP fair for ballpark pricing for this comparison. For me it still looks like D'Addario EJ's or EXP's in 12-53 are the go to strings. Honestly, I'm interested in how $ 3 Alice or Musician's Friend strings fare against these $ 15+ strings, even the 7-8 EJ/EXP's. If any strings aren't saving money, they better be more competitive than doubling up the price of what I'm already using. This was like going to a seafood restaurant and seeing lobster on the menu. I know I'm going to enjoy the lobster, but the budget is Mahi or similar. Catch of the Day is pretty good stuff too.

  • @chrisb3389

I want to try the Stringjoy coated strings on my acoustic. I have to use coated on it because it sits not being played as much. Currently using Elixir Nanoweb but don't love them. I should try the D'Addario ones, though I was unimpressed by those on my electric. Didn't feel good and faded too quick.
On electric, Elixir Optiwebs are so different than their other coatings. Those actual feel very natural to me and have good tone, life, and tuning stability. I occasionally go Cleartones on electric. Stiffer feel but more output and edge if I want it. Definitely been waiting for Stringjoy to offer coated. Just too lazy to change strings often and some guitars hang out while not being played, so uncoated isn't a practical option for me.

And the excruciating pain it is to clip on an electronic tuner and slightly turn the tuning peg .... I feel for the guy. Never knew that that process could cause such emotional disregard against a coated string before. Who knew. This shootout reminds me of string screech, which coated Elixirs eliminates. :)

I always appreciate your honesty about purchasing the products yourself, call it a disclaimer if you choose, when it comes to those that think you are "given everything" you review. The only way you could be given different manufacturer products if is if a vendor, like Sweetwater, for example, gave you "all" the strings you wanted to review, "but" then you couldn't include StringJoy in your review. That would negate you being able to give the type of review you did here. While I tend to keep going back to what I've always used, I welcome reviews like yours that educate me what is on the market I might not be aware of, or new on the market, that otherwise I would never even consider (reference tending to be a creature of habit, purchasing what I've been using). Thank you for the review!!
