I’ve always loved Jeff’s playing. Gradually Going Tornado has some amazing playing on it. Glad to see he is able to get this off the ground.

I was nice to see him after concert - his natural pleasure from music they created and from people which consumed it with such an appetite. He acted like little boy but with gracie of experienced man.

Jeff is a Master. I was lucky to have him as an teacher when I went to B.I.T. (Musicians Institute) years ago.

Right on @Jeff-o-Lee ✌️ Good on you brother!
Me too ! 1986-'87 Jeff Berlin, Gary Willis, Jim Lacefield, Steve Bailey, Scott Henderson, Alexis Sklarevski, Joe Diorio, Paul Gilbert n so many many more icons of music education and performance ! 🙏 So sadly the year Joco Pastorius died. I was also blessed to be in the only class that started the first half in the original School, then the second half across the street where it is now. So awesome!

@stevewolf223 I had the same instructors. Couple years after '88-'89. We wad rehearsal space at the old building. Great time to be at M.I. Now it's called "M.I. College Of Conterary Music".

Jeff is certainly a very skilled improviser. But I just realized that Jeff does not solo in phrases. Just an endless stream of notes. He does not take a breath like a singer or a hornplayer would have to. That makes me lose interest very quickly. I think that is why I never had Jeff on my radar as much as some other players

but the term "phrase" means different things to different folk. I certainly hear his phrase concept. I think it has a lot to do with his compositional approach. This tune reminds me of something Steve Swallow might compose. It has a bit of an unconventional harmonic rhythm and is very dense harmonically. Mr. Berlin is all over the changes- its exciting and yes....busy!

I am a big fan of Jeff's and have been for decades but, I understand what you're saying. He has broken up his solo phrasing in other settings, which allows my ear to digest his solos closer to human speech patterns. For me, not only does the continual string of notes diminish the overall value of his solo statement... like someone who's talking and doesn't take appropriate pauses between phrases and words, but also that chorus tone becomes distracting and overwhelming, taking attention away from the note and phrasing content. If you've heard any of his long form interviews you know Jeff has a distinguished mind.
In any event, Jeff is a supreme player and composer (and I didn't think he sang all that bad on GGT either). Outside of his own recording my favorite showcase of Jeff's playing is from his time with Bill Bruford. I loved the way his solo sections were orchestrated and especially written for his solos as opposed to just taking a turn over the changes.

...not fan of this kind of playing...too much notes, no silence, no air.
