I was a 8 year old Portuguese girl when he was brutally murdered. I had met him a year prior as my dad was a superintendent of a nearby building and he knew him and introduced me. His murder by those brutal monsters took away my innocence and rudely made me aware that evil exists. Thank u for keeping his memory alive.

When you put the little hot wheels car on the grave site, I really lost it. I could only think of my boys at that age playing with their hot wheels that they loved to collect and play with for hours. I could see in your face that this was a very difficult video for you to complete, but it is a very important story and I am thankful to you, Scott, for having the strength to do this.

The reason he’s buried so far north of Toronto is that the Jacques were recent immigrants to Canada - Toronto - moving here from the Azores to make a better life for their family. They were poor, hence Emmanuel and his brother shining shoes to help support the family. The Jacques family could not afford the cemetery costs so someone donated their own plot they’d already purchased and this was the location. There was also a sister. They lived on either Gerrard or Shutet, can’t remember. The father died I think about 15 years ago and after that the mother moved back to the Azores. One of Emmanuel’s neighbour friends wrote a book about him called Kicking The Sky by Anthony De Sa. The original building at 245 Yonge Street was still there in 2008. He will always be remembered by those of us old enough at the time when this happened, affectionately, as the Shoeshine Boy. I’ll never forget this case

Your very dear Scott, this little boy trying to earn some money for his family, someone’s boy, their son to have this done to him , don’t understand why the death penalty not brought up. The horrific acts done to this child , I believe the judicial system should have put the death penalty on the table , but then I don’t know Toronto, it’s laws , it’s legal system which I’m sure is complicated. They , these 4 monsters took this little boys life in such a horrid way, it’s truly unspeakable. You gave him dignity, honor , and most of all remembrance of this beautiful little boy that just wanted to make extra money and he paid with his life. RIP little Emanuel the angels are now watching over you, where no more harm nor pain will you ever feel again. Thank you Scott for having such a big heart, your show I do not miss.

Thank you for telling Emanuel’s story. My mother was 27 years old and lived in that same area where Emanuel lived. Saul Betesh hit my mother in the head with a large rock and chased her until she had to run into a restaurant for help. They phoned the police but he ran and disappeared. That happened a few months before Emanuel was murdered. May Emanuel Rest In Peace 💗

I stood there that day when they were tearing that building down tears streaming down my face so relieved they finally tore it down and I placed a flower there for Emanuel. Memories came back when I stood there with many others protesting in 77 after we left City Hall. 44 years ago today and up until August 1st I was glued to my CB radio along with hundreds of others in the hopes that he would be found safe and sound. I had heard many many years ago that he also shoe shined just above Gerrard & Yonge where the cement arch still stands where I put a flower every year and put my hand on it every time I walk by

I was also a shoeshine boy during the summer of 1977 on Yonge Street. I was shining shoes that night with my buddies as it was common to do to make money. Usual made $3-4 a night.
That night on the news it was the lead story that Emanuel went missing.
It was scary and immediately they banned shoe-shinning downtown.
I believe there was a McDonald’s next to the strip club where it happened, where the Burger King is now. The old imperial Six theatre was just a few doors down as well. The Eaton Centre just opened that summer.
His parents never recovered and his siblings were never the same again to this day.
    Rest In Peace Emanuel.

Hi Scott. I managed to source Robert Hoshowsky's book last year on Emanuel Jaques' murder. Thank you so much for for doing this video. This young boy's murder should never have happened - he came from a hard work immigrant family and because of his conscientious work ethic, he was trying to make cash to assist his family.

Learn some basic self defense. Just because females or kids are smaller don't mean they can't hurt a attacker. All men have testicles. With a tap it hurts like hell, with a solid kick, punch etc it'll usually take the fight out of him. Paul Vunack taught navy Seals the Rat technique. It's online. He's in his 60s now and I'd not want to fight him unless I was far away with a rifle. There's alot of self defense weapons to help or just plain car keys. There's alot of things ppl can use that's cheap and effective and not obvious. Be safe and be strong.

We are the same age. I had had a paper route for years. I read every edition of The Toronto Star and The Globe and Mail. Until that day, other than Charles Manson, who was almost comically evil to me, a naked Vietnamese girl named Kim Phuc, whose back and left leg was on fire from napalm burns was my only horror. But that was far away. My parents were not very good at explaining why those men did what they did. It was something I should have been warned about because I took the TTC from the age of 12 to a downtown piano lesson and had experienced strange men approaching me with odd questions about who knew where I was or "would I like a hamburger?". These were not gay males, who are attracted to consensual adult sex with masculine (ideally anyways) males. Sometimes I thought they were plainclothes police. I had long hair and was frisked for pot (absurdly) on a regular basis. I learned how to deal with those grubby (not the cops) screw-ups. Emmanuel Jaques was an introduction to lethal sex crimes upon children that seemed to occur every five years or so in Toronto. Later I risked friendships with single moms (I was a very young but responsible father) who did not "get it" about minimizing risks to their mostly young daughters. This was not about blaming victims. Almost no other mammal allows their offspring out of their sight for a minute until it's time for them to go it alone. Only humans. We roamed the streets and ravines at our leisure. We always carried big sticks. Safe when there were 2 or 3 of us. But I also did it alone. I was lucky. That poor child! I hope his surviving family is doing well. But Toronto is a city of millions and has always been among the safest cities in North America. Among millions you will always have damaged and dangerous (almost entirely) men in the population. Most abuse is by a close male relative and never goes reported. Not like these three or four monsters who were caught very quickly. Thank God. Sorry for the rant but have a Happy New Year! Most people are good.

When crimes like this are committed against children/minors. What they did to poor Emmanuel will be done unto them. Once they pass over to the afterlife over and over again. For all eternity. I would say my heart is hurting, but my whole body is sinking, feeling this horrific crime. It's hard to think of these disgusting individuals as being "human" beings. Some of these videos that you do are really hard to watch yet it's important that we do. Just as you are compelled to tell them, we listen to honor that person, in this case, Emanuel Jacques. I was glad there were flowers there. I believe Emanuel loves the Hot Wheels car. I could feel your sadness and that resonated a great deal as a viewer. Thank you for honoring the precious life of young Emanuel, may he rest in peace.

Scott, a difficult murder to cover. You did a nice job. Emanuel Jaques should never be forgotten. I was 18 when this happened and I recall it well. Finally a book has been written Outraged by Robert J. Hoshowky 2017. Unfortunately it is out of print. Couldn't find any used to purchase. The Toronto library has 6 copies thankfully. This book should be reprinted. Emanuel and all Yonge St.was in the 70's should be remembered. Thank you for making this remembrance. Every kid loved Hot wheels back then. Blessings...

Scott, excellent job my friend..this hits home (literally) big time..I'm 55, from Niagara Falls Ont. and was 10 when this happened..I'll never forget my mom who was a social worker at the time, telling me about this horrible event. I could see in her face how (even after her years and years of dealing with children of abuse, broken homes and dead beat parents) she was absolutely shaken and filled with sadness. Now that I have 2 boys (10 and 8) of my own, I can only imagine what she felt looking at me at the age of 10..this event had such a huge impact on all us Ontario boys from that point on..everywhere parents were warning their children to beware of strangers, and not to trust adults even if an incentive is offered and to stay in groups..etc etc..it's so nice how you remembered him and made the journey to his resting place..I spent a lot of time in TO in the 80's as a teenager as Yonge St. was fun St. as you know. I did however tend to stick to places like Sam's A&A's, Big Slice, MLG Leaf Games and the arcades as this event was always over one's shoulder..I just recently stumbled across you channel and have to admit that now after living 30+yrs in Europe, it's nice to spend some time watching your channel and remember my roots..I really enjoyed your Tim Horton episode..all the best, peace out man..Andrew

I was 4 months old and living in Mississauga at the time. I am surprised my parents didn't tell me about this, as I remember hearing many stories from Toronto when I was older. This is something that more people should know about. Emmanuel deserves to live on in the minds and hearts of all Canadians. As difficult as it was for you to share his story, you did a good and right thing. You did so with grace and preserving Emmanuel 's dignity. Thank you. Take good care. Be safe. Travel well.

I'd still die for My one AND ONLY Son. I hope And pray nothing but the best for HIS Family. This is so sad, AND so tragic beyond belief. If they wanted sex so bad, WHY didn't they just rape each other ⁉️ Thanks so much for sharing the details with US. Have a great evening scott.stay safe out there ‼️🙋🏿‍♀️.

I remember this tragic story as a young child on the news media, I wept for this boy, full out sympathy and empathy and prayed for him and his family, as many of us did. I did not ever forget him. I always cringed when walking by that area and Burger King, such a bad energy, some adult clubs down town remained even in the 90s, I felt very uneasy in this area, when going to art school in TO. Toronto was once considered a safe city more than others, one of the most darkest moments in Toronto history. Scott this video, is a very sincere message of honoring his young life in memory.
Child abduction , abuse, trafficking and murder is world wide and continues to this day,, very evil sick , prey on poor children and occasional kidnappings of rich kids. Monsters is an understatement, Pedo crimes are more common that we know sadly, the positive thing that came out of this is the streets in the area the business closed down at this time and glad you had mentioned this.

At this time of year,in August, I always think of Emmanuel, especially in the last two weeks, every year since 1977. It was so horrible,it was cruel. It was beyond words!
I remember, how it was covered in the Portuguese media here and across the world,it shook the entire Portuguese community's around the world, they couldn't believe it that something like this horrible could happen in Canada...
So many of us were not allowed to go anywhere near Young Street. All the extra street smarts that kicked in....such an ugly horrible feeling that families, parents had,for the safety of young children.
Emmanuel sweet boy rest in peace !
Thank you for making this video and doing it with care and respect.

I was 11 living in North York. We spent our summers walking the strip from Bloor to the Eaton Centre. Joke shops, Sams, Mr Sub. My mom worked at Old Angelo’s Restaurant on Elm st. This event changed all of that. Toronto changed overnight. There is a documentary on this. I miss Maple Leaf Gardens, House Of Lords, Joke Shops, Exhibition. Sad.
