  • This set of videos will document the production of the new reproduction of Hokusai's 'The Great Wave' being made by Dave Bull and his Mokuhankan woodblock print workshop in Tokyo, in early 2015.
    The print is being made as a 'reward' for backers of the Kickstarter project run in the autumn of 2014 by Mokuhankan to gather support for their new shop in Asakusa, Tokyo.
    The print will be carved by Dave, proofed by him once the blocks are ready, and then produced by his printing staff.

    After finishing this series, I had to come back to the beginning to say I think this series might be the greatest example of the power of TH-cam & the internet I've ever witnessed. The difference in how I felt while looking at this reproduction of the Great Wave before and after watching these videos is as immense as the amount of work and passion that went into creating it. I could write paragraphs about everything this series made me feel...but I think I'll make my own YT video about it instead. Many thanks for allowing us to go on the journey.

    Hi David, I have just discovered your series of videos and I am driving my wife mad by watching them frequently. I am just seeing your story unfold and I must say I am fascinated. I cheated and jumped to your most recent video, like reading ahead in book! Thank you so much for your dedication and generosity. I discovered your work as I am tentatively taking my first steps in to the world of Ukiyo-e, I can do this armed with the wonderful library of wisdom that you have created and curate for us all.

    When you've mentioned illumination on Senso-ji, I checked who has done it, and obviously, Motoko Ishii, one of the greatest (and one of the first in Japan) lighting designers, such an interesting woman, I ones saw a documentary about her on NHK World, she also has done/is doing (cause she often changes her works) Tokyo Tower, Rainbow Bridge, Tokyo Station, Himeji Castle and many others. :) OK, enough of this, now back to watching your amazing work.

    Dave, you might benefit from an apple pencil and an iPad or a Logitech (cheaper than apple) pencil and a newer tablet, now those pens and newer tablets let you capture the brush strokes better by deepening the line when you press more on the pencil. Just wanted to put it out there if you see if it could speed up your line work process. Thank you for your videos, I'm excited for updates!

  • @LittleOneSlaysThem

    Didn't the grandson of Bigelow (the collector of Japanese art) allow the original woodblocks to be studied and copied back in the 1980s? Maybe the Wave wasn't part of that collection😔 or..quite possibly, I'm not remembering correctly.

    • @seseragistudio
      @seseragistudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think what you are (partially) remembering is the episode during the 1980s when the Boston Museum of Fine Art discovered a number of the original blocks for some Hokusai illustrated books (collected originally by Bigelow). These were sent back to Japan (temporarily) where they were re-printed by the Adachi company. We have those re-printed books in our Collection, and will be getting them uploaded at some point ... The Great Wave wasn't involved in any of this.

  • @bcschles
    @bcschles 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi David, thank you for another interesting and informative video. I have a question about the Smithsonian's copy of Hokusai's Great Wave. You mention that the linework is very good, which suggests that the keyblock could be Hokusai's original - or if not, it was carved by someone "who knew what he was doing" (like you said earlier in the video there will always be debate over the so-called "authenticity" of a print). But does the fact that there's a mis-registration mean that the printer made a mistake or was inexperienced or was possibly not using the original color blocks? How big of a deal is the mis-registration? Or phrased in a different way, if a print that you were making had the same degree of mis-registration as the Smithsonian copy, would you discard it?

    • @seseragistudio
      @seseragistudio  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      My guess as to why that particular copy is mis-registered is that simply it was printed from a set of blocks that was already showing its age - there is no way that all the wood in any particular set will shrink and expand at the same rate, so if you just keep printing from them, at some point it starts to get very difficult to keep things lined up. The publisher at that time 'made the call' on each sheet - junk it or send it out. We are trying to hold ourselves to a fairly high standard (otherwise there would be no point in doing this), so we would have junked that one, but I can't really fault him for sending it out, as he presumably knew his own market ...
