One of Gal Costa’s hits was a song called “Meu Nome é Gal” (“My name is Gal”), in which she literally duels with her guitar player to see who can reach the highest note, but in a playful and not snobbish way. It’s pretty awesome. She was definitely one of Brazil’s top singers.

Interesting fact about Gal: when she was a child, she didn't had access to formal musical education, but she already knew she wanted to sing, so she would stuck her head inside big pans from her mother's kitchen to sing in and listen to her own voice, so she could experiment with her voice and breathing. It's not surprising she grew to have such an amazing vocal control.
For us, Brazilians, she was like music itself. Gal Costa was unique. There is a presentation in the beginning of her career, in which she duels with an electric guitar that you must hear. Look for "Meu nome é Gal".
Força Estranha was written by Caetano Veloso, talks about the passage of time, the contemplation of life and the power that lead her to sing, the power that leads singers to sing, it's a real brazilian classic, I loved to see you show this amazing music here.
Thank you, I didnt know Caetano wrote it. He's quite a writer and has a beautiful voice. I first heard him on Gal's Acuarela do Brasil, singing with her on "No Tabuleiro Da Baiana".
The nasality in Gal's voice is related to the Portuguese language spoken in Brazil. For Brazilians it sounds perfectly natural. This singer's voice is part of the collective imagination of the Brazilian people and its lack causes us immense commotion.
There is a collab between Marisa Monte and the mexican singer Julieta Venegas. Marisa featured in Julieta's MTV unplugged. It is so beautiful!! It is worth watching. The song is Ilusión (Ilusão in Portuguese and Illusion in English).
There is an old black and white video of a young Gal Costa singing "trem das onze" where she sings and plays the guitar during the dictatorship, and the crowd starts singing in unison, so she starts scatting and harmonizing with them, encouraging them, and they sing louder and louder, and it's one of the most moving things in the whole world, I cry every single time.
LOVE LOVE LOVE my favorite Brazilian singer for 35 years. I was blessed to see her in Los Angeles and was deeply moved entranced. The nostril sound is a trait of Brazilian singers and language.
I, too, had the great pleasure of seeing her perform live with Dorival Cayimi. They were accompanied only by a folk guitar. She was absolutely amazing ❤❤
Take a look at the translation of thoses lyrics. You will understand how big her voice were, she is speaking about that. That she cannot stop singging because there is a force that makes her sing! 😍
Gal Costa has become one of my all time favorite singer. There is so much good music and wonderful singers coming from Brazil. And so often poetic lyrics, it is about feeling and emotion. Thank you so much for investigating these great singers.
I wish you could get the lyrics of this song! She is sings of the forces that makes her sing and that is why she has such a powerful voice! So strong it gives me chills!

If you understood the lyrics while she's singing, being touched by each word, you would cry. This song, particularly in this performance, is one of the greatest priviledges of being a native portuguesa speaker. We miss her. And she was much more than just a singer.
I believe that she was a warrior against the dictatorship. I think, through her music, she became a cultural icon. She IS an international star 💫 Anyone who knows anything about a música brasileira knows Gal Costa ❤❤
You chose one of the greatest and well known performances by Gal Costa. She was never afraid of taking risks, although this was already a very well known song, but she gave it the best rendition. She started out in the mid 60s, took part in all the important movements of Brazilian music since then because she wanted to explore, to experiment the new and brake barriers. My heart is still reeling from her premature death. Thank you!
Thank you for your message, Julio. I’m glad you enjoyed my reaction to Gal Costa. She was indeed a remarkable and fearless singer. Thank you for watching!

She was an incredible singer. Her voice was unforgettable. When she was a child she used to sing with her head in a pot to hear her own voice. Maybe that's one of the reasons her voice is so rare and clear. A constant quest for the perfect sound. Her voice and smile will never be forgotten.
It's clear how amazed Beth was while reacting to Gal's singing. She was definitely one of the greatest Brazilian singers of all time, and I'm happy to see her talent continuously getting recognized abroad.
For anyone who has any interest in Brazilian music, Gal Costa is known as one of the greatest cantoras! She can sing in any style/genre. I believe she was Tom Jobim’s favorite singer for his music. However, she’s just as wonderful singing axé with Filhos de Gandhi! There are few artists in the world who can sing the way she does. She will always be one of my favorite singers in the world 🌎 ❤❤
I'm Brazilian and i'm going to suggest names of some very respected artist in Brazil. A small list: Alcione, Cassia Eller, Cazuza, Emilio Santiago, Alceu Valença, Dalva de Oliveira, Maysa Matarazzo, Ze Ramalho, Clara Nunes, Vanessa da Mata, Virgínia Rodrigues, Jorge Aragao, Martinho da Vila, Diogo Nogueira, Fabiana Cozza, Amelinha, Daniela Mercury, Elis Regina, Clementina de Jesus, Elza Soares.

These lyrics are wonderful, the richness of the words and euphemisms are the maximum of beauty and communication that the Portuguese language can express.
Strange Force - Força Estranha roughly translated to english I saw a boy running I saw time playing surrounding the trail of that boy I placed my feet in the brook. And I think I've never taken them out. The sun still shines on the road that I never took. I saw a woman preparing another person Time stopped so I could look at that belly. Life has a friendship with art. It's a part I was taught by the sun. The sun still travels this road that is neverending. From this comes a force takes me to sing From this a strange force in the air From this I sing, I cannot stop From this a voice tremendous I saw many white hairs on an artists brow Time doesn't stop although he doesn't age He who know the games, the fire of things that are It's the sun, it's the time, its the road, its the foot, its the ground. From this comes a force takes me to sing From this a strange force in the air From this I sing, I cannot stop From this a voice tremendous
Gal was at her best at that time. In the later years, her voice became more lower. But still a great voice, one of our best female singers. Rest in Power, Graça. Great video, thanks.
Gal is so precious, she’ll always be. I listen to her songs everyday. Actually most of the time, I only listen to her. She had a special way of singing. I’m fascinated about the way she smiled while she sang. I miss her so much, she was also a very funny person.
You should also check out Maria Bethânia. She’s known for her lower tone and very theatrical performance in which she weaves songs, poetry readings and spoken word segments. Back in the 70’s she was part of a band called “Doces Bárbaros”, along with Caetano Veloso (her brother), Gilberto Gil and Gal Costa herself.
I am Brazilian, musician, 64 years old and I am very grateful for having listened in my childhood and adolescence to the wonderful voices of our singers. And there are many. But I've always had a preference for Gal. It plays with tuning and has very rich and surprising musical dynamics. In my opinion Gal Costa is a step above other great singers of our mpb.
The refrain goes like this: "That's why a force drives me to sing; That's why this strange force. That's why I sing, and I can't stop. That's why this is such a voice."
I have always marveled at the dense, low register of so many Brazilian female singers vs the light wispy tone of the males. Look for "Dez Anos", my favorite of Ms. Costa.
It only adds to the miracle of Gal's voice learning she was not formally trained. She learned to sing by herself. One of the most remarkable events of the beginning of her life as a singer is her childhood and early adolescence, when she would place a pot over her head and experiment with resonance and the simple production of voice. From that she went to working in a record store, where she'd listen to bossa nova and anything she could get her hands and ears on. It shaped her voice and would make her one of the greatest representatives of MPB, one of the few to stay in Brazil when her friends and mentors had been exhiled due to political persecution. Gal is a born star who combines voice and soul and sheer determination.
Thank you for reacting to Brazilian singers, always with great respect. You help spread our Culture, which is so rich. We have a lot of unfailingly talented artists, and you know how to choose.
As a brazilian, Gal Costa always makes me cry. So pure, so genuine talent and delivering of the songs... Thank you so much for this reacting and the deep respect that you show to our brazilian artists.
Brazilian artists, singers, poets, are truly amazing. They are all an enormous part of your culture. That is how I’ve learned about Brazilian culture- through music! Also, Brazilian português is a very beautiful, and musical, language. I hope that, someday, I can travel to Brasil to visit ❤
Miss Gal, a beautiful moment with exuberant beauty, incredible voice, contagious smile. This song is by the composer and poet Caetano Veloso, from Bahia, Brazil, just like Gal. I love Brazilian culture. Thank you, nice reaction, greetings from Brasil.
What a nice surprise to find you reacting to Gal. I discovered Brasilian music through her and fell in love with Brasil, back in '83 and I still am. To me she is the best singer in not just Brasil, but anywhere. She has the most amazing range, not only musically, but in volume, from very soft to full blast, as you heard here. And yes, she always tells a story and feels it, she's not just a singer. Glad that you finally found Gal ; your life has just changed for the better and will become richer and richer if you keep listening to her. Try the albums "Gal Canta Caymmi", "Aquarela do Brazil", "Gal Tropical" . RIP Gal, I love you . (If you want an idea of her note range, listen to her song "INDIA". It'll blow your mind) .
Aaaah... Thank you very much for making this video about Gal. Here in Brazil, we really love her. She is an interpreter to be studied. You were very kind to us when talking about her. Thank you again.
I will be always thankful for showing our best singers and analyze with such kindness ... Gal was and still is one of our best singers ever... Her art will still for ever! Regards!
Gal Costa got me into bossa, muzak, folk, disco, funk, classic rock, world music and jazz. Im indebted to her music career. I was originally used to more metal, house, filter house, dnb, experimental, breakcore, stuff but my dad would always tell me me about a bunch of jazz and bossa artists (which id always ignore cause me in my angst, I thought my dad was out of touch😅). A few years ago my dad passed away and I decided to listen to his old record collection. Gal Costa’s self titled album was up first and the song “Namorinho de Portao”’s weird opening BLEW ME AWAY. I fell in love with nearly every Gal Costa song and my dad’s other records, and man I wish my dad still was alive because I really want to tell him im sorry for bashing my Dad’s music taste cause his taste was AMAZING. But yeah Gal Costa’s music gave me a chance to enthusiastically connect with my dad musically beyond his death and she was just such a talent. Much love to lady Costa and her family after her passing because she was truly loved by many people outside of Brazil in the world including myself.
It may well be that your father knows, in his own way, that you’re listening to these wonderful records he left for you. My father got me to listen to just about everything, and he left his records for us to enjoy. It is hard for me not to have him to talk with about music. His joy upon listening was absolutely infectious. Keep connecting with your father! My guess is that he doesn’t want or need an apology. He would be thrilled that you’re listening to and loving the music that meant so much to him!
Great reaction. Beth, Gal is among 3 Brazilian singers that are on the Rolling Stones “The 200 Greatest singers of all Time”. She was placed in 90th position. The list ignored Celine which is a shame but at least has got our greatest Brazilian singer of all times. ( The other 2 Brazilian singers on the list are Caetano Veloso and João Gilberto).
It's amazing how Betânia, Caetano, Djavan, Gal, Elis, amongst others, are so synaesthetic in their singing, in their song interpretations. Even though people that don't understand any word of Portuguese can grasp all the emotion impregnated in the song. They were truly artists in touch with their inner selves. That's why their masterpieces crossed generations and still make people emotional no matter their age.
Gal Costa canta Força Estranha, de Caetano Velloso. A letra é linda. Boa sorte! Brasil 🇧🇷
Her voice is unique and sexy. This song is so powerful and loved by all Brazilians. She sings it almost a capella. There are other versions, but she is irreplaceable.
Beth, i'll never be able to thank you enough for these videos featuring brazilian singers... You help, through your audience, that these artists reach people that would never listen to them otherwise. And i'm a metalhead... But for this, i'm simply thankful. God bless you, i love you.
She is one of the biggest singers of all times, I really cried when she passed away, because she continue evolving through all her career, singing with her soul,... so Beth: I d like you to listen to more recent Gal shows, And give us your bright comments , art is sharing. Greetings from Argentina 💖
The lyrics are about the force that leads her to sing and use her voice, and you can feel it even if you don’t know the lyrics. That’s the force speaking 😍
Loved your reaction! You should check the translation of this song because It's beautiful and talk about the art of singing itself! "That's why I sing..." she says; for Gal, singing it's a "strange force" as the sun, the time and life are themselves!
Beth, thank you so much for celebrating our national treasure! Adding some context, she is from Bahia and that state has an accent and most singers from that state are able to reach notes that others cant. And yes: she adds a lot of soul and feelings telling the story! Music connect us all! Once more: thanks!
Gal Costa magnifica cantora, magnifica pessoa. Também a consideramos" nossa" - portuguesa! Adoramos. Assisti a vários concertos dela em Lisboa. Magnifica.

I could hear them scream I've been in the essence of each hidden wish And the truest thing of all is this: It's pointless to have a way under the sun Because the sun upon the road is just the sun upon the road, it's just the sun For that reason, a power makes me sing For that reason, here's this strange power in the air For that reason, I sing and I will always do For that reason, there's in me a voice this grand For that reason, a power makes me sing For that reason, here's this strange power in the air For that reason, I sing and I will always do For that reason, there's in me a voice this grand lyricstranslate.com
Remember: this was recorded in 1984, live, not much technology to help her…
One of Gal Costa’s hits was a song called “Meu Nome é Gal” (“My name is Gal”), in which she literally duels with her guitar player to see who can reach the highest note, but in a playful and not snobbish way. It’s pretty awesome. She was definitely one of Brazil’s top singers.

Thank you, I didnt know Caetano wrote it. He's quite a writer and has a beautiful voice. I first heard him on Gal's Acuarela do Brasil, singing with her on "No Tabuleiro Da Baiana".
💅
As a Brazilian born around the time of this video, I've been listening to Gal Costa for my entire life. That chorus never fails to give me the chills.

The nasality in Gal's voice is related to the Portuguese language spoken in Brazil. For Brazilians it sounds perfectly natural. This singer's voice is part of the collective imagination of the Brazilian people and its lack causes us immense commotion.
I'm not familiar with very many Brasilian singers, but I love Marisa Monte and I'd love to see a reaction video to one of her performances.
There is a collab between Marisa Monte and the mexican singer Julieta Venegas. Marisa featured in Julieta's MTV unplugged. It is so beautiful!! It is worth watching. The song is Ilusión (Ilusão in Portuguese and Illusion in English).

Marisa is a Queen
She is incredible
There is an old black and white video of a young Gal Costa singing "trem das onze" where she sings and plays the guitar during the dictatorship, and the crowd starts singing in unison, so she starts scatting and harmonizing with them, encouraging them, and they sing louder and louder, and it's one of the most moving things in the whole world, I cry every single time.
LOVE LOVE LOVE my favorite Brazilian singer for 35 years. I was blessed to see her in Los Angeles and was deeply moved entranced. The nostril sound is a trait of Brazilian singers and language.
Yep! That's a language thing, that's why is so hard to foreigners to learn Portuguese, some sounds are very nasal
I, too, had the great pleasure of seeing her perform live with Dorival Cayimi. They were accompanied only by a folk guitar. She was absolutely amazing ❤❤
@@amanda.2416You said it! It’s a beautiful language, but difficult to learn and speak.
Gal Costa is emotion on the surface. Probably sweetest voice of Brazilian Music.
I’d love to suggest Dead Can Dance “The Carnival Is Over”.
Hermosa Gal!!! De las mejores voces que dió Brasil. Una pena enorme cuando se fue.
One of the most brilliant Brazilian's singer ever. Touching performance. Congrats for your react Beth. RIP Gal 🙌🏼
Latin american culture is so rich and beautiful, we should know each other more, for sure.
I wish you could get the lyrics of this song! She is sings of the forces that makes her sing and that is why she has such a powerful voice! So strong it gives me chills!
I saw the boy running, I saw the weather
Playing around the path of that boy
I put my feet in the stream
And I think I never took them off
The sun still shines on the road and I never passed
I saw the woman preparing another person
Time stopped for me to look at that belly
Life is a friend of art
It's the part that the sun taught me
The sun that crosses this road that never passed
| That's why a force leads me to sing
| That's why this strange force in the air
| That's why I sing, I can't stop
| That's why this huge voice
I saw many white hairs on the artist's forehead
Time doesn't stop, and yet he never ages
He who knows the game
The fire of things that are
It's the sun, it's the road
It's the time, it's the foot
And it's the ground

I was at the bottom of every hidden will
And the most certain thing of all things

the craziest thing about her is that she learned to sing all by herself it was definitely a gift
It really is amazing! She has a gift very few singers possess. Most can only dream of singing like her ❤
If you understood the lyrics while she's singing, being touched by each word, you would cry.
Beth, I really love how clear are your opinions and explanations. So glad that you could listen to Gal. Her voice is eternal.
Wow, thank you!
Gal Costa's voice dances with the instruments so naturally with such a ethereal chemistry.
Beth, these are the lyrics:
STRANGE STRENGTH
I saw a boy running
I saw the time
Playing around the path of that boy
I put my feet in the creek
And I think I never took them out
The sun still shines on the road and I have never passed it
I saw the woman preparing
Another person
Time stopped for me to look at that belly
Life is a friend of art
It's the part that the sun taught me
The sun that crosses this road that I have never passed
That's why a force leads me to sing
That's why this strange strength
That's why I sing, I can't stop
That's why this immense voice
I saw many gray hairs
On the forehead of the artist
Time doesn't stop and yet he never ages
He who knows the game
Of the fire of things that are
It's the sun, it's the road, it's the time, it's the foot and it's the ground
I saw many men fighting
I heard their screams
I've been at the bottom of every hidden desire
And the surest thing of all things

congratz man! Accurate translation of these beautiful lyrics.

She will always be one of my favorite singers in the world 🌎 ❤❤
This song is about the force that drives a person to sing. This song definitely defines Gal Costa!
Gal Costa and Elis Regina are both the best singers in Brazil, for me. It was so nice to see her here in your channel...
Gal costa with Maria Bethania in "sonho meu" are awesome. The vocal complement is great.
R,I,P, Gal
I'm Brazilian and i'm going to suggest names of some very respected artist in Brazil.

I saw time playing
surrounding the trail of that boy
I placed my feet in the brook.

The sun still travels this road that is neverending.
From this comes a force takes me to sing
From this a strange force in the air
From this I sing, I cannot stop
From this a voice tremendous
I saw many white hairs on an artists brow
Time doesn't stop although he doesn't age

I love Gal!! She is singing about the art of singing, that's what this song is about. Great reaction.
Love Beth’s analysis because of how she can express what we felt listening but have never been able to say.
PS: The “roar” gets me every time 😊
Gal was at her best at that time. In the later years, her voice became more lower. But still a great voice, one of our best female singers. Rest in Power, Graça. Great video, thanks.
This song makes me cry a lot, the lyrics hit so strong in our soul. So many things come with those lyrics.
Gal is so precious, she’ll always be. I listen to her songs everyday. Actually most of the time, I only listen to her. She had a special way of singing. I’m fascinated about the way she smiled while she sang. I miss her so much, she was also a very funny person.
Gal was a force of nature. So proud to be born in the same state as she. ❤
Bahia é tão linda
The refrain goes like this:
"That's why a force drives me to sing; That's why this strange force. That's why I sing, and I can't stop. That's why this is such a voice."
The chorus
I have always marveled at the dense, low register of so many Brazilian female singers vs the light wispy tone of the males. Look for "Dez Anos", my favorite of Ms. Costa.
Gal para mim, é uma permanente emoção
It only adds to the miracle of Gal's voice learning she was not formally trained. She learned to sing by herself. One of the most remarkable events of the beginning of her life as a singer is her childhood and early adolescence, when she would place a pot over her head and experiment with resonance and the simple production of voice. From that she went to working in a record store, where she'd listen to bossa nova and anything she could get her hands and ears on. It shaped her voice and would make her one of the greatest representatives of MPB, one of the few to stay in Brazil when her friends and mentors had been exhiled due to political persecution. Gal is a born star who combines voice and soul and sheer determination.
your reaction is the best tribute to her as a Brazilian just say thanks so much
So nice to see this reaction. I'd like you could understand the lyrics as well. Cuz it turns her rendition even more impressive and beautiful
Maravilhoso. Vc reagindo a esta música. É um clássico. E como brasileiro, sempre paramos hipnotizados ouvindo.
The Best video of the season, the best voice. THE VOICE !!!

😂
Boa sorte! Brasil 🇧🇷
So much Thanks for that, Gal is a Brazilian soul ♥️🇧🇷
Her voice is unique and sexy. This song is so powerful and loved by all Brazilians. She sings it almost a capella. There are other versions, but she is irreplaceable.
Beth, i'll never be able to thank you enough for these videos featuring brazilian singers...
You help, through your audience, that these artists reach people that would never listen to them otherwise.
And i'm a metalhead...
But for this, i'm simply thankful.
God bless you, i love you.

The lyrics are about the force that leads her to sing and use her voice, and you can feel it even if you don’t know the lyrics. That’s the force speaking 😍
She is unique 💓 And these lyrics on her voice are sooo thriling! Just perfect!
Adoro ver coisas do Brasil nesse canal. Me tira um leve sorriso na hora.
Gal was amazing singer.
Thank you Beth for give your attention for our beloved Brazilian Music

Strange power
Versões: #1#2
I watched a boy run freely
I saw time, as it played
Around the trail the boy left
I put my feet into the brook
And maybe, have never pulled them away from there
The sun is still shining at that road I've never passed before
I saw a woman produce a new person in hers
Time had just stopped so I could watch that belly
Life is a friend of art
That's what the sun has taught me
The sun, that crosses this road it has never met before
For that reason, a power makes me sing
For that reason, here's this strange power in the air
For that reason, I sing and I will always do
For that reason, there's in me a voice this grand
I saw some gray hairs upon the artist's head
Although time doesn't stop, it seems to never age
The only ones who know how the fire of life works
Is the sun, the time, the road, the feet, and the earth
I saw some men quarreling. I could hear them scream
I've been in the essence of each hidden wish
And the truest thing of all is this:
It's pointless to have a way under the sun
Because the sun upon the road is just the sun upon the road, it's just the sun
For that reason, a power makes me sing
For that reason, here's this strange power in the air
For that reason, I sing and I will always do
For that reason, there's in me a voice this grand
For that reason, a power makes me sing
For that reason, here's this strange power in the air
For that reason, I sing and I will always do
For that reason, there's in me a voice this grand
