Hello, I currently own an 04 Expedition 5.4l..I don't have the words to Express my gratitude and how grateful I am for the hard work and the amount of knowledge that you pass down to people like me that enjoy working on their personal vehicles... I been working on making very important maintenance repairs and preventative work on my Expedition for about a month now getting it ready for a 5,000 mile trip... and you have been all alone with me teaching me how to do work in my Expedition... I don't know of anyone has told you this, but I felt compelled to write to you and tell you this...I been a subscriber for a while now.. and will remain for as long as your channel exists....THANK YOU A MILLION... AND GOD BLESS.👍
Thanks for the video. I had bought a serpentine belt, thermostat, and thermostat sealing o-ring for my 2003 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer with the 5.4 litre 2 valve engine. I followed your other video to change the thermostat and it made it very easy. Then I followed this video for the serpentine belt and inspection of the tensioner bearings and the idler pulleys bearings, water pump, alternator, and power steering pump. The belt installation was a little more difficult to do because the fan shroud sticks out much further than other models making it difficult to get my hands in around all of the hoses and other items. I persevered with my iPad sitting there playing your video for reference and accomplished the job. After filling the cooling system with Ford antifreeze and distilled water, running the engine, topping it up with more Ford antifreeze I was done. I went for a test drive and found that the engine came to temperature properly, the squealing noise is gone and the engine ran smoother than it has in the past 3 years. Thanks again for the great instructional videos.
Thank you for posting your videos. I picked up a used 2007 F150 this past spring. I have never owned a truck before and your videos have allowed me to do much of the maintenance needed to keep it on the road and running. I have saved close to $1500 dollars in labor cost with the work I have completed thanks to you. Keep it up. Much appreciated.
Why is there so many dislikes on this video? The comments are nothing but positive and it was a very well made video that i'm about to be studying as I do this.
I can't thank you enough for how detailed and simple your video was. I had a 2011 e350, former Penske truck, and I watched about 10 videos. None of them were helpful and I was stuck until I found your video. I liked and subscribed. I can't tell you how much I appreciate you and video. Bailed me out
I can tell by the way you explain things on your videos you know what you're doing. Anyone who makes things look simple, even though this isn't a real tough job, you obviously have some experience in this field.
Thanks for the video sir. The techs around my area wanted $50 to $70 labor to replace the belt on my 2006 Mustang. For the price of a cheap breaker, and 10 minutes later I was done. You saved me a bunch of money, and I now have a breaker bar.
I have sifted through tons of different videos for how to do different repairs on my 99 Ford 5L Expedition. I wanted to take a moment to thank you for the hands on "layman" approach you use in your videos. It has helped me a helluva lot and made repairs so much better for me. Thanks again. I am not a big subscriber but I did on your channel. Keep putting out the good stuff. Cal
Replaced my tensioner pulley, idler pulley, and serpentine belt on my 2000 Ford F-250 6.8L V-10. I used all Motorcraft parts and everything went smoothly. Thanks for the great video!
Your channel has literally saved My present structure from day to day over four situation stranded in the cold your videos got my unsure anxious trouble shooting, to a pointed direction based procedure so greatful
Please if you could just quickly answer this for me.does the shaft of the power steering pump pully slightly moved in and out as in toward the engine toward the fan no more then 3/16 to a 1/4 ruff estimate
You´re the only one who explained and warned how to properly manage the belt tensioner. It´s a good thing I still wanted to check out if I had to set it to an specific psi measurement so I decided to check more videos then I found this one and learned to be careful and that in fact it is automatic . Thanks a bunch sir!
Today! My belt jumped and seized a roller and killed power to truck on side of the road. Sourced an instant replacement locally, “called a friend” he picked it up, brought it to me, and replaced in under 2 hours in the dark (phone light) Doubled check my favourite mechanic (FORDTECHMAKULOCO) video before friend showed up. The ORDER of insertion, and the final pulley to EASY slide over to finish. Thanks 🙏 ma dude!! Still want to get the MELLING HV oil pump
Thanks! A 1/2 breaker bar was one of the first tools I bought on my DIY repair journey a couple years ago. This was an easy replace (some cracking on inspection) and all my stuff was spinning good! I appreciate your channel a lot!
This video saved me a lot of trouble. If you are parked against a wall when you are doing this you can push on the wall with your feet while kind of laying on the car to loosen the tensioner. Helps if you have a friend or 2.
at 6:40 secs the pinched belt slip between idler pulley and tension-er pulley to attach to a/c was a very important ''trick'' i needed to learn...thank you
Thank you for posting the video. I know it's a lot of work to make any video. IMHO I really couldn't tell from the video how you managed to wrap the belt around the tensioner it looked like the grooves were facing down, but they weren't they were facing upward. To eliminate the confusion you would grab the bottom portion of the belt once it is wrapped around the air condition pulley not the top part then wrap that around the crankshaft pulley. I hope this helps some one else out. Many thanks again for posting it.
Thanks so much for your videos. Today I replaced my serpentine belt and serpentine belt tensioner on my 2009 F-150. These words: serpentine belt and serpentine belt tensioner were never in my vocabulary. I've never heard of these car parts. Your step by step videos made every thing so clear. I really appreciate how you put your camera really close to the part you're working on and explain in simple terms what to do. Thanks again-Carole
Thanks for this video. I especially liked the tip on squeezing between the tensioner to get to the A/C pump. I have a 2000 e250. The last idler pulley at 11:59 is not on my engine(5.4L) it even shows your idler on my hood schematic, but I apparently don't need it. There's a spot there for one, but it's dry corroded and looks like there's never been anything in there. The routing of the belt is the same really, just minus the second idler. I had to pull the belt up over the top of the alternator pulley instead of what you did. which wasn't too difficult. I'm going to replace the tensioner. I did a goofy hack to bypass the A/c pump, which sort of worked for a good while...Long story. I take the left idler pulley off and replaced it with a slotted pulley, then re-routed with a different sized belt. I think it ruined my belt tensioner. The pulley was gouging a round trench on the front of the block.... My belt size is AC Delco 8K991. Curious if it's a different size than yours.
Thanks, worked great. I accidentally routed that last smooth idler before the alternator, but did not seem to make a difference. 2010 Explorer has a plastic conduit for the electrical clutch fan. Removed it first just to make it easier.
Love this guy how you explains everything step-by-step I've been watching a couple of his videos he does it very professional doesn't mind going to extra mile to explain people of what they can't see or what he is trying to do and if you seem to be confused he tries to explain to you as much as he can on a video good job keep it up trust me your help does help people with money problems as you could do it yourself and not going out there and spending a ton load of money for these type of services great job keep it up don't understand why people have thumbs down on this video If you're trying to help them obviously they're probably ignorant
Thank you very much. This made it so easy to change my belt. This is my first Ford expedition 03 5.4 and watching your channel I think it’ll last me a while. Thanks again
Just did the idler and tensioner pulleys with a new belt on my sons 2005 F250. Thanks to this video....it was a breeze! Love the videos and thank you for sharing👍🏻
Thank you for sharing this. Your videos have helped me out so much, learning how to fix it, and financially, by repairing my 01 4x4 Lincoln Navigator myself, and saving me money! Respect to you. I wish you continued success.
I Just wanted to take this time to thank you for all the info you give us and help us keep our cars "healthier", doing it right, and keeping the cost down. I'm at 62,000 miles on my 2012 Escape 3.0L. I like preventative maintenance and wanted to change out the serpentine belt on it. I realize that definitely one cannot change it by opening the hood, and doing it from the top as in this video. Do you think you can post a video of a belt change on an Escape?
Excellent step by step. My old belt was fraying and the strands had begun wrapping around my water pump/fan shaft. I managed the belt swap with minimal cursing ;-) Thanks for the tips!
Got an 08 5.4 f150. Changed belt awhile back. Noticed some squeaking noise for awhile, changed tensioner squeaking got worse. I haven’t checked the idler pulley’s but when I spray water on the grooved pulley the squeaking goes away.
This will help me put on the belt when I get my new tensioner pulley assembly. Mine was completely seized, and I broke it trying to change my altenator.
Just want to thank you for your very well performed instructional videos and for taking time to share what you know with others. I'm no mechanic so your videos take the guess work out of these jobs.
I'm super jealous of how organized your garage is!! I can't even get my apartment organized!! and thank you for the great description, here I go! fingers crossed! aahaha
The images you attached are close to what my 2006 5.4 looks like but the idler pulley is missing in the diagrams. Also, the title lists 5.4L (2V & 4V). Mines a 3V. Otherwise it was a very helpful video. It's very tight getting to the compressor pulley from above. I found it easier to get it from below. I really enjoy your videos. Thanks!
Great vids ! I work almost exclusively on Subarus and when I have a problem with a Ford your videos always seem to run me through it quickly and concisely thanks for putting in the effort!
Great video. I have a 2003 Ford Expedition 146000 miles and I believe the serpentine belt is still the original. I recently had noise in my engine which came from a bad tension pulley and the pulley directly above it both was changed but the belt was not. now only the serpentine belt is making noise all my pulleys are looking properly aligned. the noise is on a cold start up and last for about 5 minutes or a short drive will stop the noise through the entirety of the ride. any suggestions?
I need your help, guidance, or assistance. This was very helpful. I had to replace 1 flat and grooved idler pulley, the belt tensioner and pulley, and the belt. So i take the belt off and start taking off the tensioner, and flat pulley with ease. When i went to take off the grooved pulley on the bottom right side of my vehicle, the damn pulley bolt hole broke and half of it came out with the screw. I called around and everyone's telling me these i have to replace the entire cover for that simple part. Please tell me that that isn't true. It seems like it can be replaced. If it's possible to replace it, what should I do, or where are you located and I'll bring it to you. I have a 2003 Ford Expedition 5.4L. Any help is appreciated.
Great video, I was able to change my belt quickly, the hardest part was to put the new one on, I checked the pulley as you suggested, and the bottom grub idle had a little move forward and backward so, I changed it for a new metal one, but the new one also has a little play back and forward, is this normal? thanks for your help
Thanks for the tip on feeding it through and looping it on the a.c. first that one tip made the job so much simple. You are my go to channel on TH-cam for videso on my f150.
I borrowed the breaker bar tool from AutoZone the darn thing didn't fit completely in the groove so I spent a couple hours tinkering with it and about 30 minutes replacing belt, I still hear a little hissing maybe it's just power steering! But over all it's not that hard! I could easily do it again with no hesitation! The key is to make sure your tool fit into tension pully and loop belt thru first step, the rest you'll figure out by looking at your diagram!
new belts slipping from power pump pulley.any ideas? other pulleys/idlers are fine.strange knocking sound since and gas gauge went to empty since then.why?
great video ... any idea om how to do this on a 99f150 that has no ac ? the sticker with the diagram tells me to move the tensioner counterclockwise to bypass the cempressor , its seized soni will have to buy a bew tensioner any idea on what part to get ? it seems not many models have that option to bypass the compressor
Could you share your thoughts on spinning decoupled alternator pulleys. What's good and what to look out for if it makes some noise. At 200K, I replaced my alternator with a aftermarket unit because a noisy decoupler was still spinning after engine shut down. Now I am thinking I should have replaced the decoupler and left OE alternator on until it fails. (02 G Caravan, 3.3)
D Nelson I really don't see those since Ford doesn't use them except in a few instances I know they were problematic for the Chrysler guys in the shop though.
Nice video! While testing the pullies, the one on the altenator does not seem to turn freely like the others. Is that a problem I need to worry about before I put a belt back on? Thank you!
This happened to my 07 Lariat this past week. 210k on the odometer. It made a horrible noise and I quickly turned it off. There were three bearings on the ground.
@FordTechMakuloco Hey i have a 2008 Mercury Grand Marquis it has the 4.6 2v and 106k miles on it.. i have a huge list of all paperwork from the date of purchase from the very old lady who ran into a garage center beam and her kids thought it was time to sell it.. so i bought it.. The thing is that there are no codes, interior is clean, and the engine is whisper quiet, smooth, and all the fluids look new.. the 100k mile maintenance hasn't been done yet, but i plan on doing it this week.. All that said, i notice when i am on it, that i hear what i can only call either a bearing noise or vacuum leak.. I don't have any codes, so i don't think it's a vacuum issue, i don't think it's a chatter either like a timing issue, where you would get from running low quality fuel.. I was curious if you know what else it could be.. I don't hear the sound when it's at idle, and i don't think it's timing chain guides, the oil has been changed at the Ford dealership since new every 3k miles.. so.. I am at a loss.. figured i would replace the belt, idler pulley, tensioner, and water pump.. but maybe you in your wisdom have an idea as to what else it could be.. I do know the gas cap needs to be replaced.. but i don't think it's an evap issue.. again no code..
Been following your videos for quite a while dude, just wanna give you props man, you're awesome!!. Keep up the good work. Going to change the belt on my 4.6 Explorer tomorrow and this gave me more confidence. Thanks for all your help
Thanks great straightforward video at a good angle and instructions. There was another on YT I thought was good but yours is the best and good tips what to listen for and feel, Well Took about 10 minutes to do, pulleys checked out and tensioner was a bear to pull back with 15" breaker bar and pulley quiet so it's working great. Sadly I already had a Dayco belt, will be interesting as I had a Gates on a Nissan Maxima that dry rotted after 3 years.
The 1/2" drive was left behind in the spring tensioner on the special service tool of your serpentine breaker bar tool. Surprisingly no one else made that comment. 😮
Hello master Ford guy! Can you tell me what year did the Expedition switch over to an electric only cooling fan? I'm going to look at buying a 2004 Expedition 4.6 140K miles and I am hoping it still does utilize the clutch fan and not just an electric fan as another 4.6 I had in a 2003 Town Car did..that's why I ask..the TC had the 4.6 V-8 but no clutch fan just electric...
how about working on a newer explorer. mine has a squeal only when I'm driving in heavy rain. mostly notice when stop and start but not all the time.75k on, thinking about changing belt too
Makuloco how am I able to find out which engine I have 4.6 or 5.4 my vin says 5.4 but some pictures online of a 4.6 look similar to my engine can you help me out please it’s a 2002 F150 king ranch 4x4
help I have a crown vic, codes p0316, 0420, 0128, 0442, 0307, 0308 and c1266. I know a couple are a coil pack, I have changed spark plugs. check engine lite is on and or flashes intermintantly and the car has 193+++ miles.
Changed the belt and checked the pulleys still got a a loud squeal only when I accelerate. I can be driving put the truck in neutral rev the engine no noise, put truck back in drive accelerate noise is back. Might not be related but when moving very slow I here a squeal sounds like a rubber gromit grinding together from under the truck. Any suggestions on what to check? Appreciate the videos, used the wheel bearing video last month. 2001-F150- 4.6 - 170k
Thank you for your very informative video's. I have a 2007 Expedition EL Limited just turning 80k. I was wondering what your thoughts are on Cold air intakes such as a K&N? BTW I have a Ford Premium Care plan to 127,000 miles. Thanks
FordTechMakuloco Thanks for your reply! I watched the video, as always very informative and makes a lot of sense. One more question. I always have (since taking delivery) my expedition serviced at the dealership. What are your thoughts on switching from the motorcraft semi synthetic to the full synthetic. I always get "the works" oil change done. Thanks
I just changed the belt, all idlers and tensioner on my 08 F150 w/5.4 and it still screams at high rpm. What would you think is causing this? The alternator does squeak like the one in this video. Both the water pump and ps pump run smooth.

Just had to do this in a gas station parking lot when mine broke on the way back from Chicago. This video saved my ass. Thank you 🤘🤘
Why is there so many dislikes on this video? The comments are nothing but positive and it was a very well made video that i'm about to be studying as I do this.
🤔Can tell how old this comment is just by the information you had back then..lol... 2023 YT don't like not liking...

Or is that considered needing a new pully or the complete assembled pump mind you the pully doesn't wobble or continuously spin
Perfectly normal even when new.
Very helpful thank you hands down your channel makes the 5.4 a whole lot more tolerable.
Should a new grooved pull have a slight wobble?
Still sucks pretty bad lol
💯👌🏻
@@lindseyyah1 no absolutely Not
This video along with the diagram on the underside of the hood made the job pretty easy

Thank God for your great video on the serpentine belt. It helped me solve a problem I had at 4am.
You don’t disappoint man, every time I see your vids it’s spot on to the typical diy guy like me. Much appreciate it! Keep up the great work!

The 2009 E250 Econoline Van (4.6L V8 w/ac) is a hugh PITA for one thing you need a step ladder to even access the engine bay properly.

Best tutorial by far. Thank you!!!
Best video I've seen on YT. Thank you so much! 👌
True.

thank you soooooooo much for your time it helped me put on my belt all by myself without help from the hubby,,

Thanks…took more time to watch than to do after watching!!
This video just saved me on a Thanksgiving road trip!!! Saved lots a money bc of it... Good lookin out
Could if been much better with a separate camera person! I'm still not sure of the belt off the power steering!
Do you have a video on batty replacement Ford F-150 Ecco boost 2014
Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
Great video, I was able to change my belt quickly, the hardest part was to put the new one on, I checked the pulley as you suggested, and the bottom grub idle had a little move forward and backward so, I changed it for a new metal one, but the new one also has a little play back and forward, is this normal?
thanks for your help
I've seen videos where they removed the fan shroud and fan. Thanks because that's what I was about to do 😩
Thanks for the tip on feeding it through and looping it on the a.c. first that one tip made the job so much simple. You are my go to channel on TH-cam for videso on my f150.
learned a trick i couldnt have done it without this video thanks a bunch
Guess I shoulda watched to the end before commenting! Great video - you make it look easy! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
With no leaks present then how do you determine if the power steering pulley bearing or the power steering pump are worn and need replacement?
Great video Does it matter if I start top to bottom or do bottom to top
new belts slipping from power pump pulley.any ideas? other pulleys/idlers are fine.strange knocking sound since and gas gauge went to empty since then.why?
great video ... any idea om how to do this on a 99f150 that has no ac ? the sticker with the diagram tells me to move the tensioner counterclockwise to bypass the cempressor , its seized soni will
have to buy a bew tensioner any idea on what part to get ? it seems not many models have that
option to bypass the compressor
Thank you!
Since it is so heavy and there are dual bearing it will spin smooth but only spin for a bit.
Great video. My F-150 didn't need the intake removed ... so bonus. Replacement was easy.
Thanks for being very detailed and informative in your videos. Easy to follow.
Wow belt change was quick... that tool is nice.
This happened to my 07 Lariat this past week. 210k on the odometer. It made a horrible noise and I quickly turned it off. There were three bearings on the ground.
@FordTechMakuloco
Hey i have a 2008 Mercury Grand Marquis it has the 4.6 2v and 106k miles on it.. i have a huge list of all paperwork from the date of purchase from the very old lady who ran into a garage center beam and her kids thought it was time to sell it.. so i bought it..
I do know the gas cap needs to be replaced.. but i don't think it's an evap issue.. again no code..
is there a way to bypass the A/C compressor without replacing it ?
Could the Issue of squealing while accelerating be linked with this because I am having that issue and it only does it when I accelerate?
Great video! Helped me change my belt quick and easy.
Thanks for posting and saving my bacon. It took me longer to put the belt back in than to change the alternator.
Thanks you are my mechanic I appreciate for what you’re doing
I'm glad you said to check the bearings on each of the pulleys. good check
There was another on YT I thought was good but yours is the best and good tips what to listen for and feel,
Well Took about 10 minutes to do, pulleys checked out and tensioner was a bear to pull back with 15" breaker bar and pulley quiet so it's working great.
2010
@@FordTechMakuloco Thank you very much for taking time to answer! I truly appreciate it!!!
Thanks a ton for this video! Your tips made my Crown Vic belt replacement a breeze.
How many miles were on this engine?
The manual for my 2010 Explorer 4.6L says 1st change out is at 150k. Will it really make it that long?
Is this the same for an 01 expedition 5.4?
how about working on a newer explorer. mine has a squeal only when I'm driving in heavy rain. mostly notice when stop and start but not all the time.75k on, thinking about changing belt too
Dirtyharry70585 Good thinking.
Makuloco how am I able to find out which engine I have 4.6 or 5.4 my vin says 5.4 but some pictures online of a 4.6 look similar to my engine can you help me out please it’s a 2002 F150 king ranch 4x4
do u have any video ,how to remove AC compressor
What do u know about bypassing the ac pulley . Is it possible on a 97 f150
help I have a crown vic, codes p0316, 0420, 0128, 0442, 0307, 0308 and c1266. I know a couple are a coil pack, I have changed spark plugs. check engine lite is on and or flashes intermintantly and the car has 193+++ miles.
+james e Mendenhall What year vic? Yeah the next step is replacing coil packs for cylinder 7 and 8 which should take care of 3 codes right there.
Well done. Extremely helpful to me. Thanks.
Power steering?
My 93 Mark VIII has the 4.6L v8. Does this apply? Sorry if this sounds stupid
Thank you for your very informative video's. I have a 2007 Expedition EL Limited just turning 80k. I was wondering what your thoughts are on Cold air intakes such as a K&N? BTW I have a Ford Premium Care plan to 127,000 miles. Thanks
kdsek I don't like them see my new video on this.
Thanks
kdsek I don't think it is necessary on a daily driver like yours you would get virtually no benefit over the semi you are running.
Best use for youtube for I've ever come across ..thank you ..
This information is timeless, thank you
Really help me out. Saved me 200$ thank you
I just changed the belt, all idlers and tensioner on my 08 F150 w/5.4 and it still screams at high rpm. What would you think is causing this? The alternator does squeak like the one in this video. Both the water pump and ps pump run smooth.
the scream is coming from the trans
normal
Do you need to rotate the tensioner in the opposite direction if you do not have AC? I have no AC and need to replace belt
+Jesse Pedersen Rotate the tensioner pulley away from the belt that is wrapped around it.
i tried the half inch racket on my 2005 ford E350 v10 superduty and it was too small.. what other alternatives are there
You must have an aftermarket tensioner, the other size would be 3/4".
Thanks man - you saved me! You made this look EZ. Wish there was as much room for my arms on my F150.
