The signing bonuses being escrow-proof means that players, like McDavid, get paid the full amount of the signing bonus, no matter what. This means that the money that the owners take back (and are fully entitled to) only comes from the collective group of player's base salaries. In effect, every player pays an equal percentage in a form of tax, to subsidise the owners when times are harder (like the past few years). This is, also, why you don't see the salary cap drop. Salary levels stay the same, but players do get paid less pre-tax. However, the nasty bit about this is that anyone, who gets paid a signing bonus, is effectively removing that money from the escrow pot. Taking McDavid's case - he keeps $2.2m that would, normally, have went into escrow. Since this money stays with him - it means that every other player is, effectively, subsidising McDavid's contribution. So, McDavid's base salary of $1m this year means that his team-mate, Derek Ryan, loses more, in escrow, to the owners from his salary of $1.25m. This makes signing bonuses very valuable to players. Not only do they get paid before they play the season, but they are both escrow and buyout proof. The player gets the full amount of signing bonus money in both cases. I wonder how other players look on other players with most of their pay in the form of a signing bonus - knowing that they're a little bit poorer, because of that teammate.... (Only mentioned McDavid as he was in the video. There's plenty of others, in the NHL)
The one thing I admittedly don't pay too close attention to, but don't understand well are the rules and implications, particularly around the salary cap with buy outs.

I'd like to see the offer sheet compensations lowered to promote player mobility in the league as well. The compensations are currently so high, that teams can lowball RFAs and overall mess up young player's development without much fear of losing them to others who might be able to use them more efficiently. It's also pretty dumb that the compensations favor better teams with later draft picks over worse teams with better picks, when it should be either neutral or maybe even slightly favoring the worse teams. I mean, having the right to match the offer sheet should already be a somewhat decent protection against player poaching, but add to that 1 or more first round picks and there's hardly any way for an offer sheet to make any sense for the team giving it.
I'm inclined to agree with you, but I suppose they also don't want GMs to upset each other (a la Canes & Habs). Honestly it's pretty straightforward to me. A team saves cap hit by signing a player to a lower cap hit but a longer term with higher pay at the start of the deal, and the player retires before the contract ends. Whatever amount the team saved from the cap is owed over the remaining duration of the contract. For instance, Brent Burns signed an 8 year, $64M contract, so he had an $8M cap hit. In the first 4 seasons of the contract, Burns earned $10M in actual salary, so the Sharks saved $8M. Last year was the 5th year and he earned $7.5M, so they essentially paid off $500K of what they owed him. If, before the start of next season, Burns decided to retire, the Sharks would owe the $7.5M in cap savings split over the remaining 3 years of the contract, so $2.5M per year for 3 years. If he retires after this season (his salary is $6.5M so they're paying back another $1.5M), the team would owe $6M in cap savings split over the remaining 2 years, so $3M per year. After the next season where he earns $5M, the team pays back $3M, so they owe the $3M for the last year. After the following season, his contract is expired so nothing is owed. This is true for any team that saves any money on a contract, even if the contract has since been traded away from them. For instance, Shea Weber signed a 14 year, $110M contract with Nashville, a $7.857M cap hit. His first 4 seasons he earned $14M, so Nashville saved $6.143M in cap per season or $24.572M total. He was then traded to Montreal, and in his first 2 seasons with Montreal he earned $12M per year ($4.143M cap savings per season, $8.286M total). The next 4 seasons Montreal paid him $6M per season, so they paid back $1.857M per season, bringing the amount to be recaptured down to $858k. He's now choosing to remain on LTIR rather than retire (which means he gets the remaining salary but the cap hit doesn't really count towards his team), and his dead contract is now with Vegas. If he were to choose to retire now, Nashville would have to pay back the $24.572M split over the remaining 4 seasons ($6.143M per season) and Montreal would have to pay the $858K over 4 seasons ($214.5K per season), while Vegas would owe nothing. Because of the extreme situation that would happen if he retired before his final season (Nashville having the full $24.572M, or around 30% of their total salary cap, owed over a single year), the league decided to amend the rule to put a maximum on the recapture penalty. The amount to be repaid during a single season can't go over the cap hit of the contract, which means that if he chose to retire at any point after the upcoming season ended, the Preds would owe his $7.857M in cap recapture penalty for 3 years, and then $1.001M in recapture in the 4th.
During the regular season, if you are over the cap then you cannot ice a full roster. Come game time, some guy who makes enough money would have to sit out so the total cap of the guys on the bench is under the cap. So you will only have 11 forwards, or 5 defenseman, or both.
Yeah, Adam Wylde and Co, will definitely spend a good 30 minutes crying about it, talking about, “you can bet that,” and, “So, how does this affect the Toronto Maple Leafs?” On a serious note though, there is no penalty necessarily. However, during the regular season, you can’t put a team that’s over the salary cap on the ice for a game. You would have to make healthy scratches until the roster that ends up on the ice is cap-compliant. So there’s no fines or anything like that, but you won’t be able to use the full roster that you would be paying for. I can’t remember how recent it was, but I do remember Vegas actually did go through this. Ended up playing games with something like 11 forwards and 5 defenseman and double shifting until they were able to make trades to get back under, which didn’t last long, lol.
@@philtorrez4198 I'm pretty sure that's not actually true. The salary cap is a season total, not an individual game total (hence why expensive players are able to be picked up at the trade deadline). If a player has a cap hit of $8.2M, each game he counts for $100K*, and at the end of the season you can only have spent a total of $82.5M. If a team is operating with a roster that is $2M under the salary cap for the first 3/4 of the season (roughly when the TDL normally is), in the last 1/4 of the season they've "earned" $6M in cap space which can be spent in the last 1/4 of the season to bring in an $8M cap hit player. That being said, I'm pretty sure it wouldn't work the other way around (first 1/4 of the season $6M over the cap, then go $2M under the cap for the last 3/4). From my understanding the way it works is that the $8.2M player counts for $100K per game*, and the salary cap is $1M per game*. You can't go over the total amount that you were allowed to spend for that day. For instance, the first game of the season you can have spent a total of $1M of cap space, the 3rd game $3M, so if for some reason you only have $800k worth of cap hit the first 2 games you could do $1.4M for the 3rd game. * This is simplified, I know it's based on days on the roster rather than game days. I also simplified the salary cap to $82M instead of $82.5 because $1M per game is cleaner than $1,006,097.56 per game.
Been watching hockey for 30 years and this is still not clear to me ! lol ! The players that retire and the penalties that teams have to pay and the pay the players get exactly and ltir exact pool amounts mostly!
Contract termination vs Buyout trips me up sometimes…. Some are teams are charged and some not… I think if they are minor players, I think it’s not charged?
This was so interesting and yet it just shows us how complicated running a business is. I hope the NHL can improve on the Waiver issue and LTIR. It is so complicated and interesting how salary cap and waivers affect the game. I know the NHL wants PARITY, probably ever since the Penguins began to dominate, or maybe the Black Hawks. I wish they would just let it all go, and let the best team just win, on and off the ice. Let the teams get better without having their hands tied. It just takes an open mind and more NHL executives with knowledge with creativity and math skills. Let alone determining Players talents and abilities. Everyone has SCOUTS, but not everyone has an eye for Talent. Now you need talent on the ice and on the Spreadsheets. Raise the Salary CAP and improve this Waiver nightmare. Also, scout much much more. NHL rules and it is a great game. Just wish it was TELEVISED more often. Thank you Shannon. Great work.
A video about players who rose late in the draft to be a top pick and how they did compared to the ones who were there longer could be cool. A lot of talk about Slaf rising (and terrifying comparisons to Kotkaniemi, another draft riser through tournament play) and it could be fun to look at
The Devils wants habs to select Wright #1 because they want Slavkowsky because there is only one slavkowsky!, There are several top Centers and lets say Cooley was habs second pick because they moved up in the draft. Cooleys performance would be stronger with Slavkowsky on his wing and we put veteran Dadanov on his line for leadership on the rookie line.......first line. Suzuki, Cole, Farrell, and Dvorak, Gally, and Andy on the 2nd line, Slavkowski. Coolie, Dadanov, on the 3rd...thats solid. the fourth line could be our prospects and a bevy of draft picks. Devils want Slavkowski and any deals with the devil will be a hell of a way to go.... Draft Slavkowski #1 and there is 5 or 6 talented Centers that would be better with Slavkowski on the wing. I like Wright Butt this can't be another Miss
Waivers seem to be fine. Signing bonuses seem to be OK as well. I think all RFAs (or, like, all RFAs who actually played NHL games) should have arbitration rights, so that there are no stalemates with them. Maybe different rules for RFAs that are just out of ELC, with more contract length options, should exist.
Is it considered "gentlemanly" to not grab a waiver player, even though they could be an asset to your AHL team? I see a lot of decent/worthy of a second chance players clear waivers that, in my mind, shouldn't.
I'm pretty sure if you claim somebody they have to report to your NHL team and if you want to put them in the AHL they have to go through waivers again and the team you claim them from can just claim them back
Thank you ! This cleared up a misconception I had with waivers. I incorrectly thought that if a player played more than 11 games then they instantly had to start going through waivers. Why would a team do a contract like what Vancouver did with Boeser's old contract ? Is it just part of the negotiation or are there advantages where it reduces likelihood of him signing with another team ? This year Tim Meier will make $10M and it's the last year of this contract. Will the Sharks have to pay him $10M to retain his rights or does arbitration have something to do with it ? What if Timo doesn't want arbitration ? Thanks again !
The Sharks need to offer him a 1 year, $10M contract if they want to retain his rights. However, both sides could come to an agreement either before or after to pay him $8M per year for 8 years or any number (as long as it's not less than the league minimum salary or more than the league maximum salary - 20% of the salary cap). Also, refusing to issue the qualifying offer doesn't mean you can't re-sign the player. Let's say the Sharks can't afford $10M, but want to offer $8M for 1 year. They could refuse to issue the offer and then sign him as an unrestricted free agent to a 1 year $8M offer.
If a player gets bought out don’t they still get all the money? If so why would you make a contract buyout proof? Cuz if you still get all your buyout money and you sign with another team that sounds like a check on a check
Waver...I remember when the Habs claimed Paul Byron in 2014 or 2015...CGY wasn't very happy lol BTW Shannon,a video explaining the Carey Price LTIR situation(if he doesn't replay) would be VERY interesting and Informative.
It’s quite because everyone is focused on the draft or don’t have the assests to do anything else (Tampa, Florida, and Avalanche to name a few) Also I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of the gf’s in the leagues are gold diggers like you were jokingly suggesting.
For waivers I legitimately thought claiming a player off waivers was 100% first come first serve and whoever sees the waiver wire first and wants the player gets them, I didn't know there was a specific order process of going through each team getting asked do you want the player.
It’s like a note goes out, this guy is on waivers , do you want to make a claim ? Yes or no? Everyone submits their answer, then the bottom of the list team gets the tie breaker if multiple teams put a claim in.

Sports contracts confuse the hell out of me. Quick question what would be the punishment be for a team that breaches the Salary Cap???
They have to listen to the Dangle Podcast where those chuckleheads talk about gambling, the Laffs, and the cap.
@@georgeblair3894 🤣🤣🤣
During the regular season, if you are over the cap then you cannot ice a full roster. Come game time, some guy who makes enough money would have to sit out so the total cap of the guys on the bench is under the cap. So you will only have 11 forwards, or 5 defenseman, or both.
Yeah, Adam Wylde and Co, will definitely spend a good 30 minutes crying about it, talking about, “you can bet that,” and, “So, how does this affect the Toronto Maple Leafs?”
On a serious note though, there is no penalty necessarily.
1 hour later "Mcdonaugh traded" lol
When you put out 3-4 videos a day that’ll happen
It has been quiet. NHL Executives spending this weekend to holiday, since everyone has been grinding since the covy shutdown.
What about those stubborn guys like Adam fox who refuse to sign.
day 21 of asking for a Dale McCourt video
Been watching hockey for 30 years and this is still not clear to me ! lol ! The players that retire and the penalties that teams have to pay and the pay the players get exactly and ltir exact pool amounts mostly!
My girlfriend put me on waivers, but luckily I got claimed by her mom.
Mcdavid only makes 1m a year?!?!
No 12m. 11 up front
@@dr3putt62 oh, dang still seems so low, if mcdavid was in the NBA hed be worth 270m supermax
@@johnnyglenn2692 NBA makes about 4 times the NHL does
So much for a quiet day in the NHL Ryan McDonagh to the preds
Great work.
Trade happened right as I watched this
A video about players who rose late in the draft to be a top pick and how they did compared to the ones who were there longer could be cool. A lot of talk about Slaf rising (and terrifying comparisons to Kotkaniemi, another draft riser through tournament play) and it could be fun to look at
have you played dwarf fortress, rimworld, arurora 4x? instructions "figure it out ya noob"
LTIR, Retirement, and the Salary Cap gets to be a bit convoluted. That and limited trade clauses (Dadonov), ha ha.
it is crazy to me that the Blues gave up 6 1st round draft picks for 1 season of Scott Stevens
Your defiantly excluding shanahan from your thoughts
morning kittens
Ouch minni is paying 12.7 mil this year to dead cap money
On a day you discuss demotion and being discarded, it's apt you're wearing a Vegas hat.
I believe Boeser's dad was sick and had medical bills. I think the Canucks did it to help pay medical expenses
McDonaugh to the Predators.
I sure hope that Lauren is not watching.
If a player gets bought out don’t they still get all the money? If so why would you make a contract buyout proof? Cuz if you still get all your buyout money and you sign with another team that sounds like a check on a check
Waver...I remember when the Habs claimed Paul Byron in 2014 or 2015...CGY wasn't very happy lol
BTW Shannon,a video explaining the Carey Price LTIR situation(if he doesn't replay) would be VERY interesting and Informative.
I would like to see this too, there is a lot going on here with Carey. Hopefully Shannon will come through with an in depth look video.
The NHL is the only sport that gives year round. God Bless Hockey!
Im thrown by when a player is waiver eligible or not.
It sounds complicated, but it really just boils down to age and games played.
It's way too quiet. I want to hear what Dubas will do to not only create a team as good as last year, but better.
cant believe you are wearing mismatched jersey and hat.
It’s quite because everyone is focused on the draft or don’t have the assests to do anything else (Tampa, Florida, and Avalanche to name a few)
Also I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of the gf’s in the leagues are gold diggers like you were jokingly suggesting.
Conner McDavid can buy/renta girlfriend! They're overrated anyway. He can wait..... Play hockey!
