I just turn down the detail in the picture profile to -7 on 4k, gets rid of the digital sharpness. Then Edit in a 1080 timeline but I still have the option to crop in and re-frame shots without losing detail. Thats how you get the best low light as well.
@@michaelbell75 go to your picture profiles, should be pp1, pp2 etc, open the picture profile you wish to adjust and youll see a list of settings. Click on whatever one you need to change and adjust accordingly.
The A7IV 1080p is very sharp, you forgot to mention that the roller shutter performance is better in 1080p. I use both 1080 and 4k, it all depends on what I am filming. For low light I use 4k though to get lower noise at night.
I’m so glad I stumbled across your video. I immediately noticed that your images looked absolutely cinematic like a real movie. It has a genuine film look that I rarely see in these types of videos. I feel much better about shooting 1080p now especially on the A7IV. You are very wise to trust your own instincts.
I like what you’re saying. I really love the A7iv look of 1080p in S-I 10bit 4:2:2 it reminds me so much of my favourite movies. The sharp digital look has its place, but that’s not the look that inspires me.
I just shot some quick test footage on my Lumix S5 in FHD and looked at it on our big TV. It looks great! Probably gonna shoot all my narrative projects like this frome now on.
Thanks a lot for a great video: Sensible and open to different perspectives, rather than dogmatic. I will continue to experiment on Sony. Looking forward to seeing more of your work!
The 1080P on A7IV is way more than enough for any kind of commercial work/short films. It isnt “losing details” or “not sharp”. Everyone is watching the video on compressed social media anyways? The only time i shoot 4K is during low light situations or works where Sharpness matters soooo much.
The 1080p standard was invented I believe by Sony after studies to determine what the limit was the human eye could resolve while sitting at comfortable viewing distance from a screen. 720p was determined to be the average resolution the human eye could resolve and 1080p was slightly higher than the maximum. So 1080p mimics what we actually see, whereas 4k includes detail we normally do not see.... IMO 1080p can look better than look better than 4k because with video you are trying to show the audience your perspective which was seen by you in 1080p, not how the world actually is. When you and the audience see the 4k video later both of you have the opportunity to see unintended detail you didn't see while shooting and may well not want the them to see now...Again, IMO this is why Hollywood movies are still shot in mostly in 1080p, not 4K or higher resolution.
Thank you for this been thinking of getting one but didn’t like the 4k crop and I actually shoot on a bmpcc 4k now and love that image so much just want another smaller workflow camera with same like quality and you proved it’s possible in 1080
Great video, thanks. I’m just getting my head around the various options on the a74 but like you I don’t really see the merits in 4k, given the hassle involved in editing etc. Most people are consuming on mobile and tablets anyway. I like the emphasis you put on feel and story, which to me are much more important than resolution.
My thoughts exactly! I just got my a7IV a month ago and the over sharpened 4K video just looks so fake and weird, drove me nuts. Ive been using Mist filters to soften it up but its still too sharp IMO I shoot video portraits of models and want that soft, dreamy filmic look. Looks like Im going to be shooting in 1080 from now on! Dont have to mess with the crop in 4K60 either, thats a win/win! Thanks
On A7IV 1080p quality differs a LOT when using different settings. From 24p to 60p it is better to use aps-c mode. If you use 120p the quality is better when in full frame mode. Make a video about it.

This is a great video. I think this is the most important thing. Try and make videos that do not look too "digital". Not worried about the cinematic look, more than getting away from that pixelated look.
my 1080p footage on a7iv seems quite a bit noisier in the shadows than when I shoot 4k... any idea what i'm doing wrong??.. shooting xavc s hd 50M 4;2;2 10 bit
Can't say enough how much this video saved me from wasting my time on the 4K. I wanted a true hybrid and the A7iv really is just that, but the sharpness is just way too much. I was even considering switching back to canon for the first time in 5 years to get away from the digital Sony image.
What about using the K&F Black Mist with variable ND + filming in 4K with minor sharpness in cinetone? That would be my favourite Setting I‘ll try these days 😅 What do you think? Good Plan?

As far as a delivery format, 4K is totally overrated. I'll always prefer a decent codec to more resolution, besides as you mentioned it, the upscaling function in Resolve will fool anybody.
Thank you so much for this vid! I have been debating downsizing my A7iv to the fx30 (even though it’s 6k downsampled) as I noticed the footage was quite clinical but the cinema line and A7S iii footage was a lot more filmic which is what I was after like yourself. I think people see the 7k down sample as an advantage. I will definitely try this method and lowering detail to in 4K slog-3 PP
Thank you so much for supporting the video! That's a great question! We don't use Premiere but we usually just put the footage on a 4K timeline and export them in 4K in DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro. Hope it helps!
Henry, great video!!! Why don't you record in 6k and downgrade? You files would still work for future generations... I don't know what's next, but it will surely be something worth going back to higher resolution. I use lenses that provide downgrade on the image and mostly without those filters that we have all tried. I found heaven in downstepping the image in post... In the end that is what you're camera is doing for you, and without saving those huge files for the future. Take care, hang ten...
Most people don't have over heating issues even in Max settings in 4k with the higher heat threshold setting. 1080p would be so much easier on the camera I don't see this as ever being an issue. It probably uses less battery too.
You don't need 4K if all your videos are going onto Vimeo & TH-cam because the compression they use pretty much undo's most the quality/sharpness bump you get from 4K. Plus do you really need 4K when most people will view it on their phone or tablet? If your producing commercial work then 4K is probably the right format to record in even if you then down sample it to HD for the finished product. I really do think there is far to much hype about 4K & now 8K, I watch everything on here in HD not 4K and to be honest there isn't any real noticeable difference in picture & sound quality.
I agree so much with the very sharp imiage ,i have a lumix g9 and sony a7iii and i prefer the colors and the image of sony cause lumix footage is super clean and sharp
Thanks for this great video : being a hybrid wedding photographer I never tried the 1080 for weddings. It would be, however, so much easier., avoiding the crop in 4k 60(50 for me, european). Do you think 1080 is ok for weddings ? Will the clients notice the difference with 4k ?
If there was a list of what makes a wedding video great, the resolution of the video would be waaaay down that list, but it would be there nontheless. There are way more important things I struggle to take care of first. As an opinion to your question, I believe a good 1080p is good enough for weddings. They care about other things way more.
You know you can soften an image in post but you cannot recover lost details, right? XD Also the 1080 on a7iv is quite bad compared to many other cameras on the same tier...
Softening an image in post is much worse than softening it in-camera. Also, you're not losing details by turning down the sharpness in camera. What are you talking about? This is opposite to reality.
Sorry to say but you mixed a lot of things. I does not make sense. Bluray and dvd render perfectly on a projector at 24p and you can even set the interpolation to the minimum. You don’t get the soap opera effect.i have pro cinema and it is very good as good as at the cinema in 2d and 3d. Filming at 4k is far better in low light for reduced noise. You can also set profile to reduce the detail and apply good color grading and film grain in Davinci Resolve 18. I however use 1080p 60 for slow motion. I don’t use 120p. I render my video to 1080p for easy uploading and smaller size project and the computer does a better job downscaling and it allow you to render 4k if necessary. The difficulties is much more to choose 24p or 30p, and the consequences with lighting frequencies that could create banding flickering. It is difficulties to see that on the small screen. It is visible only on the large monitors when it is too late.
Dude resolution has nothing to do with "film look". What you're describing is the artificial looking sharpness that you're trying to get rid off. Get an OLPF for you camera or softer vintage lenses
