Good job mate, I have lived in West Heidelberg for 52 years of my 59 years and know the place back to front, I grew up in the Olympic Village and as a kid had no idea it was a rough place to live. The Olympic Leisure Centre (TRY Youth club) back then was my home away from home as was Olympic Park where I played Football, Cricket and Little Athletics. I think it was a bit better in the 60's and early 70's but the major decline would have been mid 70's through the 90's. Always been good people there and you could avoid trouble if you wanted to as I did. Played a lot of sport in the area so I had no problems growing up there. Always been a stigma with living in Westy, I used to tell people I grew up in Heidelberg so they didn't think I was going to pinch their wallet. They are gentrifying it with a lot of old commission places being knocked down, my current house was my parents which was built in 2008 so relatively new. I have lived there since their passing away. I still wouldn't change a thing. I love the joint. Cheers.
@@Noelzsazsa I dont remember that one but I never ate pizza until my 20's. I have heard stories from older friends about a stabbing on a Pizza shop on Bell street in the 70's where Benny Edwards was killed. If I wanted a Pizza I went closer to Burgundy St. to Isabellas up the hill on Bell St. The best Italian food around in the 80's and 90's. Never heard of Kablans mate.
You hit the nail on the head when you said that the council has abandoned the people of West Heidelberg, and for all the bad that is in West Heidelberg the good people out way all that crap, most people who live and grew up there are good hard working decent people who do want to see there area improve, peace out brother 🙏
@gold3084 That's true but if the city of Banyule what's in improve the area for the others who do buy land and the other that have invested in the area wouldn't you think they would keep there properly clean as to show insensitive to others as to set a standard, it's not as if they don't get enough money from rates, but I am assuming that the people at the Banyule council has brains which obviously they don't because you can see the results of their efforts 😕
All those boarded up joints including the flats are getting redeveloped. Heidelberg west is a fucken chill place and when you’re living there your neighbourhood and neighbours are real and friendly. Most of Heidelberg west was built by soldiers returning from the Korean War. And most of the names of streets are named after significant battles in wars.
Sadly though, that massive empty block of land right before The Mall, has been vacant for at least a decade and NOTHING has been done with it. Same with several other pockets of the area, like Waterdale Rd and on Tarakan St, behind the St. Plus school and the old Tech School. They kicked out all of those residents in so many blocks of flats at least 7-8 years ago or more, moved them onto wherever, perhaps on the streets even. Well, there were no houses or units or anything going up to replace those lost flats, was there. So who knows where they ended up. While massive blocks of land lie vacant for a decade or more 😡
lived here about eight years ago, and I kid you not, it was the most spectacular experience of my life. I rented a house behind the Aldi, next to the commission flats, and honestly, I never needed a TV. I’d just step outside, have a smoke, and watch the chaos unfold. One day, I was having a smoke, minding my own business, and watching the crackheads across the road when this skinny white guy pulled up in a station wagon. He drove into the flats and disappeared from view. About 17 seconds later, I heard screaming and arguing, followed by the sound of glass breaking. Five seconds after that, the same guy drives out casually as if nothing happened but now, every single window on his car is smashed to bits, and there’s a pushbike hanging out of the back window. It was the funniest thing I’ve ever seen in my life. Then there was that time I went for a walk at night, and a police helicopter was hovering about 20 meters off the ground while SOG/SWAT guys were everywhere. That was fun. Another time, a cracked-out guy drove his car into a building. There were overdoses left and right, with the fire brigade breaking into people’s flats to administer EpiPens. It was a wild time. Oh, and on the first day I moved in, I saw this cracked out woman get into her car up the road. She drove for about three seconds, pulled up in front of my place, and tried to have a heart-to-heart conversation with me, acting like we’d known each other forever. And then there was this one day I was heading to work. I turned the corner onto Bell Street at around 4 a.m., and there was this lady who had crashed her car into a streetlight. The car was stuck on the base, oil was everywhere, and she was just flooring it, trying to drive away. I parked my car and decided to watch the chaos unfold. Eventually, we got her out of the car, and she started rambling about how her boyfriend made her go out to get drugs and a bunch of other crackhead nonsense. At that point, I was like, Ah, screw it. I’m going to work. Best three years of my life.
They got a lot of older houses down and new houses has been build, my mum brought a new build house 1999 and she's been there since. Now in Heidelberg West it's like mixing new and older houses and because the new owners came in the area you can see a lot of good cars in Heidelberg West now too.
I deal with alot of clients in heidelberg and surrounds. Their eyes light up and beam with happiness when they get a new vehicle from my workplace. Most of them are the most nicest genuine people you would meet. I have made so many contacts and friends around there (i do everywhere i serve really), but the peeps in this suburb are fantastic, and makes my day so.much better dealing with the ones who respect you back.! Great video btw too TJ. Is it possible to put the names of the background tracks you used.? I love that chillout type guitar stuff. Thank you.🙂👌👍👍
My childhood till 1972 was in West Heidelberg. It was clean, I felt safe, the Mall was the local shopping centre and I loved it. Thank the Lord my father moved us to North Ringwood in 1972. That place is now definately abandoned!
I grew up in West Heidelberg, went to heidelberg heights primary until i got asked to leave for fighting a teacher in grade 2! 🤣 I went to primary school at cape st from grade 2, thank god i did, i woulda turned out a bit different. Moved from normanby crt west heidelberg along the creek to behind the IGA there in heidelberg, you should have gone and visited Norflands shopping centre. The place is slowly getting rebuilt and gentrified as you saw, the 80's 90's were its worst peak, when you said heidelberg heights that turns into the nice part of heidelberg. There's a suburb called Bellfield they made up so Ivanhoe (which is a stuck up suburb) wasn't next door to West Heidelberg. Keep up the vids dude, Think i was about ya 15th Sub, you had me at the nippys joke you made when you went to high st preston!
Preston local here. That bloke at the lights on Bell and Albert streets is there daily. He's usually asking for change or ranting his ass off. Don't think I've ever seen him actually wash a window lol
2 decades ago I use to live near the cnr of Plenty and Murray Road. That cnr of Bell and Albert area hasn't changed much since then. But he's a new development.
What a flash back for both me and my wife, my wife grew up in a flat behind the Olympics shops, and I was on bell street opposite the mall, in the 60's back then bell street was single lane each way. If you had done your walk back then, your car would have been stolen, and you would have bashed up big time by the West Heidelberg boys, that ruled from bell st (South) west to the creek north to the school and east to the Australian bird company (can't think of the street name) in its day it was a crazy place West Heidelberg - they then changed the name to Heidelberg West trying to upmarket the area. They failed. With all the boarded-up houses typical Housing Commision (that what Govt department was called then) Multi Storey flats to come. Thanks for the look back into out nightmare past, but for our parents thats all they had a roof over our heads.
The only business that has survived and flourished in West Heidelberg is Midnight Spares open 24/7 and guarantee to fill your order asap. And one fact is that the Olympic Rings from the games were installed in the gymnasium of Heidelberg High School in Oriel Road, it's been bulldozed the rings ? I've just been on google maps you aroused my memory of being there, its not the same area, Heidelberg High on Oriel Road gone, Bellfield Primary opposite the high school in Banksia St gone Heidelberg Tech Cnr Waterdale Road & Bell Street gone, they've gutted the area.
@@CharlieCarp-b7q Heidelberg High has been gone 20 years at least I reckon, at one stage they merged Latrobe, Waterdale and Heidelberg High together at Banksia St and called it Banksia College a few years after I left school in 1981. All the schools are gone other than Olympic Village and St Pius. My daughters had to travel to Macleod Secondary College (Macleod Tech.) every day a couple of years ago as there was nothing closer. Not a lot of young people in the area anymore so they shut the schools down and merged them.
I grew up around there in the 70's & 80's. Use to run at Collingwood athletic track. Use to go to the old roller rink back in the 70's. Went swimming in the Olympic swimming pool. Would sometimes shop at West Heidelberg mall and northland. So some nostalgia there for me.
I use to be one of the Posties of the Berg about 15 years ago. Man that shit was rough. Waking dudes up out of bed who have only been out for a week with what they think are more fines and summonses wasnt fun. You went down all the streets and commissions I delivered to, thanks for the memories. One of which was Sanaya Sahib (woman who killed her baby and dumped her in the creek around 2017) lived just houses away from where you were.
@@iankearns774 Liberty is a funny place one end full ghetto and one is where top AFL stars live and the parents of Bianca Censori etc etc, probably as vast a lifestyle flip you can get.
Most boarded houses in Heidelberg West is due to commission house tenants moved on and property sold to developers. It has been slowly changing. The Mall consists of individual owned shops therefore any attempts to rebuild it had failed. Heidelberg is not Heidelberg West, two different looking suburbs with didn't post codes, Then there is Heidelberg Heights between Heidelberg and Heidelberg West. Overall one very large area
A couple of k's or less south of Heidelberg Gardens is Eaglemont and East Ivanhoe, some of the most expensive real estate in Melbourne. It's a whole extra step up...
@@TJ_OFFICIAL_MELB She is right, the butcher at the Mall used to give you lollypops. My Mum got her meat there every Friday through the 70's. I had forgotten that.
Yep, Heidelberg is the other side of the hill over Upper Heidelberg Rd. Between Upper Heidelberg Rd and Waterdale Rd, it's Heidelberg Heights. The rectangular area between Bell St and Banksia St, then Waterdale Rd to the creek, is now Bellfield. Used to just be part of West Heidelberg until the mid to late 90s sometime, clearly a rename for real estate purposes. And the Village was the worst part of the entire area, always has been. Along with a few pockets just outside of the Village. Nothing against those who lived in those parts of West Heidelberg, though. Had several friends and a few relatives that lived in that part of W. Heidelberg, and I was never really too afraid of walking all the way back home (close to the Repat hospital) from the Village area at night from about the age of 12. This was the mid 80s, btw, so it wasn't entirely that bad or my dad would have never let me do it.
@@MelB67 ofcourse he let you walk home. The old heads looked after the young heads. The gangstas helped out the youngins. We were always safe at a young age but if you put your self deep in the mix as we got older there was always a chance you'd get got for it.
Okay watched the rest... I used to live on Boyd Crescent in late 80s esrly 90s. Number 13! We got robbed 3 times there, once by the next door neighbours! And our car was petrol bombed too. It was definitely the hood back then man. Also there used to be a mad gravel BMX track behind the Olympic Village pool, it was sick!!!
Good Old Heidelberg West. Got into a lot of mischief back in the day in and around that area, which leads to countless visits to Heidelberg cells, court and Prison 😂. I think it's improved over the years.
The Mall was empty because the Courtrooms were open, but Westy was far worse in the 70s... when Skyhooks and AC/DC were popular, ohh and Abba... I was always amused by toothless guys covered in tattoos on bail all grooving to Abba on a Saturday night either before or after the ritual brawls. And they were all Aussies with a small sprinkling of others.. Many have passed on since those days but the truth is that you were as safe at the Mall as you were in Burgundy St. What finished off the culture there was disco and heroin. I escaped to Europe for more than a decade to dry out! Many properties in the area are Gov owned and are also up for sale in the state they're in. Westies were hard working class people but over all they were solid. The police were violent tyrants, they would throw you in the back of a divvy and chuck you out in the bush somewhere among the trees over an hour outside Melbourne, in order to keep the peace.. lol and we would square up in the coming weeks.. torch a unit. It was anarchy and chaos but it contained order.. then we grew up.
I grew up in the berg it was the hardest neighbourhood by far . But now it's deadset quite I'm baffled on how much the hoods changed. There's not even kids on the street.
Grew up in the area liberty parade. And yes it was rough even back in the day. My parent moved into there commision home when i was 6mths old. There still there lol. Im 53yrs old. Thanks for the memorys bro

T.J = see the going in 'hot' or as in straight up = worked well = when you walked down the lane, alleyway in Heidelberg West. Man, that's exactly what we mean = meaning the music when you walked down there = it fits = it's the right place and for real the right time, and the right sound for when your walking down there. That was spot on. For real. As opposed to other times, with other music. That music when you said "stuff it, Im just going to walk down here". That quote on quote suspenseful sounding music works for that walk down there, as in = not knowing what was down there or if anyone was in there and even what was on the other side = that part was really good. As in man, there's no real problem with your music = its just the timing of it. You see the music you used, when walking down that alley way = it fitted perfect, and man that's going in hot = but still, being safe. Like can you imagine that place in the late '90's and early '00's = exactly. Yes = and the flat's, meaning the 'ascot vale' flats = use to hold soldiers and their families who had just returned from ww2 = not that you would have to put something like that in there, yet thats part of the video shows the good & yes it's a fact. For real though man = see how you just used that eerie music while walking down that alley way, lane way. That was spot on = that is what my group of ppl and I, are trying to convey. Yet with no disrespect at all = if anything your 100 percent right with your comments = that at the end of the Collingwood video, that 'violence' isn't the answer = great message to the ppl, and ppl these day's seem to jump straight to weapons violence. Like ppl if they "have" to. They don't throw hands they = UNFORTUNATELY just do something that will send them away for years. Trust me we know. Man, you seem like a good guy with morals. Please know any of our text's messages to you have sincerely been meant with = no disrespect, with no pressure and with just a bit of encouragement from some viewers, as to what they would like to see. And man good on you for just doing it = as in like you said = to go in hot. All we give is a bit of feedback. But with no pressure. T.J = Keep dropping your videos = bc trust me = you can always circle back and do other areas again and as we both know there are many suburbs in Melbourne, Victoria = that have as you say and its true 'the good, the bad and the ugly". If we didnt, we wouldnt of even reached out :) kind regard's
The people that put West Heidelberg down are people who have never lived there..When I moved in from Fairfield my insurance went down by $100s. It just shows that Heidelberg west is safer with less thefts...
You dont shit in your own nest and you dont rob from your own. I heard that line about 30 years ago, that was a code the locals for the most part stuck by, however Northland by definition across the Darebin creek was in Preston and the tea leaves had a field day stealing from there. I wish I had a $ for everytime I was offered something cheap from an open car boot. Of course I never bought anything from them. LMAO

Things haven’t improved in 50 years. Back then I went to a masquerade party at night dressed as a pussy cat. Had to ride my motorcycle in full feline outfit. That wasn’t too bad except it broke down in Heidelberg West and I was dressed as a pussy cat while pushing a broken down motorcycle. People threw things from cars at me 🥾. That sort of thing. That’s an interesting bit of trivia and a cool movie. I watched that while working on a ship up in Weipa, all those big monsters bouncing around hahaha
i live in Heidelberg Heights and id say im lucky where im in an area which seems clean although the street i live on as it gets closer to heidelberg west it becomes somewhat sketchy. im kind of towards the next suburb rosanna which is a nice area to explore too
My mum grew up there and I remember visiting my nanna as a young kid. They lived in Tarakan Street I think, opposite some massive flats. Near the old tech school. Flynn.
Omg so many memories you gave me as I grew up in West heidlberg in the 80 went to school at Olympic Village primary school then heidlberg tec look so quite now
I lived on Waterdale Rd for a few years and also Setani crs late 90s and it wasnt that bad. Moved to Macleod and that was rough as well in the early 2000's but fine now.
I grew up round the corner, spent a fair bit of time round West Heidi and Bellfeild as a kid, it's nuts how dead it is now. Also Kebabs on Bell are the real deal! Go check em out!
Wasn't originally meant to be a permanent setup but someone decided to make it Housing Commission. My parents moved there from Hawthorn in 1959 with a young family, they wanted to move to Jordanville but there was no commission places left. Their choices were Broadmeadows or Heidelberg West and they chose Westy because it was closer to their relatives than Broady was.
Great video changed alot brother 😉 Rosanna is good keep the videos coming brother back in the 90s u had to navigate carefully.. Heidelberg west shops went off punch ons and heroin, the area was controlled by hard thugs and definitely had a repi used to smoke bud in a few houses u went past
The athletes warmed up and excersized at the track in Olympic Village. They completed at Olympic Park in Melbourne. I did little athletes at Olympic Village track. I recon the shops in Olympic Village where the very first to add metal lock up shutters in the free world lol😅
Lived on Liberty Pde for a few years on the west Ivanhoe end. One night walking home from 7/11 this Ute went speeding past, turned a corner and stopped. I heard and explosion and bogan babble “Carn ya cunce, let’s go” etc and the car went speeding past me. They stopped when they saw me, lingered for about ten seconds and they were obviously discussing whether they jump me or not. Cooler heads prevailed. I walk around the corner to billowing smoke and a car on fire. Had to be insurance job…
I’m my opinion if your not involved in drugs your fine but as soon as you don’t pay up the tic then cars get burnt or houses to get you moved out the area I’ve found but you do have a huge disparity on house prices so some now are moving into as $200K cheaper than the next suburb even across the street on the border to a new post code
Use to go to banyule high school in Heidelberg. Would walk through that park up to train station. Two neighbourhoods close together but totally different vibes. I think I grew up in too many rough neighbourhoods that when I moved to eltham I lived their for a while went to westy and mill Park would notice the difference.
@@TJ_OFFICIAL_MELB yes Eltham is a rich area and lived there for about 5 years. You notice how different the neighbourhoods are and the people for those areas are. Really had to laugh a tad when you said: “I’m making a documentary.” A documentary typically involves researching, which was totally absent. Nothing about the Banyule Community Health Service (Alamein Road), Barrbunin Beek Aboriginal Gathering Place (Catalina Road), Malahang Reserve (Southern Road). Why on earth would you visit on a Sunday; and you’re “surprised at how quiet this place is”? Honestly, what would you expect on a Sunday afternoon? Sport, good on you for taking initiative, but seriously, if you’re going to slag off on our suburb, speak to more than one person who’s lived here for only two years, and do your research. You pretty well stuffed up on this, I’m afraid.
It's like heaps of towns, close or far from the city. Lot more rougher back in the day. Pick nearly any suburb and the crime was at least tripple what it is today. Remember, use to be no cctv. Local police would close shop at 10pm 😂 I'd say most of Melbourne is safe now. Everywhere has characters, but crime doesn't pay as much now. Also, there's a government dole. Before the dole, it was WAY worse. 30% in poverty. Survival was harder for the poorest. People make fun of the dole, or blame it for other problems. But the dole slowly turned things around. If the economy keeps going the way it is, and the polis refuse to do something about the housing crisis and cost of living while wanting to cut the dole, cut funding to education, loose as standards for landlords (in Melb).. then these problems will come back.

Wow man, what an epic read .. it’s like something out of a movie
Epipens have nothing to do with overdoses lol
🤣🤣 love it. Thanks for sharing.
They got a lot of older houses down and new houses has been build, my mum brought a new build house 1999 and she's been there since. Now in Heidelberg West it's like mixing new and older houses and because the new owners came in the area you can see a lot of good cars in Heidelberg West now too.
It’s such a massive contrast
Noone going to talk about the pharmacist 😂😂 he's seen some shit.

Thank you.🙂👌👍👍
Thanks man, no doubt there are great people in HW, with the tracks there all on epidemic sound.. thanks for the nice words

My childhood till 1972 was in West Heidelberg. It was clean, I felt safe, the Mall was the local shopping centre and I loved it. Thank the Lord my father moved us to North Ringwood in 1972. That place is now definately abandoned!
Wow must’ve changed big time
I grew up here, right near The Mall. Awesome to see one of these vlogs done here
I grew up in West Heidelberg, went to heidelberg heights primary until i got asked to leave for fighting a teacher in grade 2!
You fought a teacher at grade 2?!? Lol you brawler! Thanks for supporting me from the beginning, really appreciate it 😎

Preston local here. That bloke at the lights on Bell and Albert streets is there daily. He's usually asking for change or ranting his ass off. Don't think I've ever seen him actually wash a window lol
Yep, definitely given him some change once or twice haha
2 decades ago I use to live near the cnr of Plenty and Murray Road. That cnr of Bell and Albert area hasn't changed much since then. But he's a new development.
Oh damn.. just a beggar
@@TJ_OFFICIAL_MELB Yeah and not very mentally sound, but he seems harmless enough.
Walk there so often never seen him
What a flash back for both me and my wife, my wife grew up in a flat behind the Olympics shops, and I was on bell street opposite the mall, in the 60's back then bell street was single lane each way.
I've just been on google maps you aroused my memory of being there, its not the same area, Heidelberg High on Oriel Road gone, Bellfield Primary opposite the high school in Banksia St
gone Heidelberg Tech Cnr Waterdale Road & Bell Street gone, they've gutted the area.
That’s awesome man
I've lived in Heidelberg for about 4 years. After moving here from Sunshine I'm like, eh it's not so bad 😅
lol
Heidelberg west eats sunshine all day bruz, there’s hope in sunshine which is non existent to HBERG WEST!

Waking dudes up out of bed who have only been out for a week with what they think are more fines and summonses wasnt fun.

Heidelberg and Heidelberg west are to different joints. The postcode ain't even the same
Ahh thanks for that
Yep, Heidelberg is the other side of the hill over Upper Heidelberg Rd.

Many have passed on since those days but the truth is that you were as safe at the Mall as you were in Burgundy St.
What finished off the culture there was disco and heroin. I escaped to Europe for more than a decade

@TJ_OFFICIAL_MELB it wasn't all that bad. I had some wild neighbours, but everyone either kept to themselves or got along well.
Theres an idea to talk about = meaning to go through = the good, the bad and the ugly side = then to how the suburb is today in 2024. Good luck man, and we mean this for real. If we didnt, we wouldnt of even reached out :) kind regard's
thanks for the comment, the Springvale video you commented was the start of the year...its a learning journey

Cool, you do a video
Wanna vlog with uncleTJ
Let’s go!!
Very good points

You went on a Sunday the mall is always dead on Sunday
Yeah I know
I can’t understand why it’s up to the council to clean up this place when there are so many lazy people that could make an effort to pick up the rubbish, mow the lawn and make some nice gardens and have some pride in where you live……Just pure laziness with “”” I don’t care””” attitude::::::: We live in a beautiful country so give it a go,,,,,
That’s not what’s happening there they are housing commission joints which the government has moved people out and then literally just let the joints rot with no safety fence or signage. People in Heidelberg west care about their property and will not live in filth.

There is no one in any of the boarded up ones you walked past and all young families live there. In the houses u walked past literally the mental people are blow ins from elsewhere
