Ah the Ford "The Homer" Edsel, a great idea crushed by bad timing (recession), bad design (Time magazine compared the front to "A midwife's view of labor and delivery"), bad manufacturing (common wiring harness problem due to proximity to exhaust), and Marketing.
(On the design, they were victims of visual design having to yield to mechanical needs. That vulva-esque grill, for example), was meant to be much smaller, but they couldn't make it with enough airflow to keep the engine cool. Thus it became huge, and far less visually pleasing.)
The new Edsel division (it was going to be a mid-luxury car range to take on GM's Oldsmobile, so that Ford could position Lincoln in the luxury bracket they believed it should have been occupying) ended up costing Ford some $350 million (~$3.66 billion, inflation adjusted).
BUT, like so many failures, the concept behind it was good. Ford could have benefited from a mid-luxury division situated between Mercury and Lincoln. The car industry could (and in the future would) benefit from vehicles designed to be easier to use, with driving aids to help improve safety.
Unfortunately, Ford is often a victim of its own terrible corporate culture, and poor timing.
