The #1 Texas Rig Option Bass Anglers Forget About (Don't Make This Mistake)

- Weightless Texas Rigs are often forgotten about. These lures are perfect for fishing isolated cover when a traditional Texas Rig with a worm weight isn't getting the bites you hoped for. Watch some of my favorite lures underwater to see how they react when fishing weightless.

The Pros use FFS to see into the water we use Steve Rogers to see into the water. Awesome video !
Thank you! This was a fun one to do.
LOL It's funny because it's true!
The most factual comment on TH-cam 😅
Haha well said! I agree
Steve's TH-cam thing is awesome
Caught 4 yesterday on a weightless Texas rigged Pit Boss. I’ve been using it over 50 years and sure haven’t forgotten about it.
Excellent!
Do you still allow the bait to sink to the bottom ? And should I still working it slow ?
@@zayg062 every day is different depending on weather and water conditions. Sometimes I work my baits fast like soft jerkbait. Other times I’ve seen them not bite unless you dead stick it on the bottom which is very common in my pond because they’re highly educated. All my bass have probably been caught at least 20 times each. I hate dead sticking. I don’t have patience for it. I have a lot of big bullfrog tadpoles in my pond and they don’t move much unless something disturbs them. I think a bait setting still on bottom resembles them. The initial fall after the cast gets the bass’s attention to check it out. But I also catch a lot on the initial first fall after the cast.
@@zayg062 great questions! Most often I will let it sink to the bottom and I do work it pretty slow. Of course, shallower cover is best or it can take a really long time to drop and then a small nail weight will help.
Gotta hand it to you on today's subject of "versatility". Personally, I love the idea of changing small aspects of one particular technique or method into a completely different presentation for certain scenarios. Thanks for everything you do on this channel, Steve. I have learned a whole lot of stuff from your channel and I'm a 58yo guy who has been fishing off and on for around 50 years. You are a really good presenter of information for anglers of all ages, styles, and geographic areas. Please keep doing what you are doing. Thanks again. God Bless. 👍🇺🇸
Thanks so much! I will do my best.
Right on! Most of my Texas rig fishing is weightless. Years them up on ponds when weighted stays in the muck on the bottom.
I almost exclusively use pure black senkos, weightless, Texas rigged. It just works well in so many conditions. If the wind gets too high or I’m in much deeper water, I’ll switch to a more appropriate lure but I’ve never seen anything outperform a senko, bass just love em.
Thanks .... Been fishin a t rigged senko for 15 - 20 years !!! Love a weightless texas rig !
It is amazing what a versatile lure that is.
Man I have to track down that first flat one. those hit all the bases, looks a ton like a sunfish profile. And that drop/twitch looks like free dinner. Thx Steve.
Usually I 'd go with 3X/elaztec pearl/white "Z" or "Z-too". But I like the single tail shimmy on the drop much more. All meat turns white in the water when it's dead or dying. So that's where I start most days when I target a spot. If I want to cover a little more water near the surface, like shallow pad fields when frogs aren't hot, I switch to a hollow paddle tail but skip the belly weight on the hook. The tail can slap the surface like a subtle buzz bait on the fast retrieve in open pockets. But it won't sink, you can let it sit like it's hiding just under pads on the next edge. Super fun when I don't take the boat out and in the kayak I don't plan to move around much.
This is great stuff! Thanks for adding this. I appreciate it.
I grew up in SW Miami. We always threw plastic worms weightless and usually caught bass every trip. Old Crème and Mann’s Jelly Worms on an old Zebco 202 Honeybee Special w/a fiberglass rod. It worked. Usually fished @ depths of 10’ or less.
I still have a pile of Jelly Worms - a great lure!
Great video! Two of my favorite baits to fish weightless are the Googan Drag N’ Drop and Pinner Worm. I fish them both on a Googan 2/0 Drop N’ Finesse hook. My favorite colors are Morning Dawn and Hot Pink.
I will have to try those! Thank you
Love this channel! I learn something every time!
Awesome! Thank you!
Hey, Steve, great to see ya and pray u are well. Looking forward to this. I have thought of this with a rage craw. Be safe
Hi Shannon! I was going to add a Rage craw. I definitely should have. They have a real nice fall weightless.
The Keitech Shad Impact is my favorite for this type of fishing.
Same , but I throw the skinnys going for crappie. Can you imagine the molds for those being poured with elaztec & the squid juice. Add some salt for a lil sink. Yeah baby.
I was just thinking I should test out this presentation! You definitely boosted my confidence. Thanks Steve.
Best of luck!
The Texas rigged baby bass senko is a killer all year up north ... the underwater footage was superb steve..
That is a great color lure!
Awesome video Steve so simple but so overlooked a lot of times.
Thanks 👍
Excellent video as usual, Steve! Going weightless can be just the thing for targeting finicky or pressured bass! I like to use various types of weightless plastics from stick baits to craws and flukes for targeting suspending bass more than anything. I'm not looking to drag the bottom, like I would with a weighted Texas rig, but slowly glide around. It just works so well!
I was thinking of you when filming the stickbait! Know that you like to modify that one and catch a ton of fish on it.
Like some others, this weightless rigging technique is probably my #1 bass catching technique in ponds. Loved the footage. That first bait is crazy.
It sure had a super slow sink to it.
1/8 ounce weighted hook gives that great gliding action for deeper structure. Give it a try. Thank you for all the great videos.
Awsome content as usual, thanks. God bless and tight lines
@@douggoertzen2396 thanks!
Weightless Texas rigged BrushHog resulted in my son's pb 9lb bass
That is awesome!
Great tips with video. Thanks, Steve!
You bet!
Trying both Curly tali and Texas sets ups today . Have Gee crack bellows gill and worm ! Will touch base thanks boss
Good luck!
Been using this technique for years along weed lines. While I use about anything plastic the one that gets the most bass both large and smallmouth is the Zoom Magnum Ultravibe Speed Craw in Watermelon with red specs. I cast into the weeds then work it across the top of them till it falls at the edge. That is where I get most of the hits, on the fall. Have to watch the line as you may never feel them. A little twitch or movement of the line or even running with it along the edge of the weeds is all you have to go on. If that doesn't get a strike, start twitching it.
This is great! Thank you for sharing it. So satisfying when you see the smallest twitch in the line and they got it.
Seeing the flat sided baits underwater is huge - that looks just like a dying baitfish. Great reference.
Great Steve. You’re right. I forgot about this…
I do all the time too. Lol
The fat Neko Senko is the best one imo. It has the famous senko shimmy but when you swim it the bulbous tail does a subtle swimbait type motion. I feel like I’m betraying myself even telling yall about it 😂😂
I like a trick worm weightless
Geecrack makes some fantastic soft plastics, my personal favorites are the Bao Bab Hog for a creature/beaver presentation or the bellows swimmer with the paddle tail on a swim jig is also killer
They do have some really neat stuff!
I have a weightless t rig on one of my rods e ery time I'm fishing. Everything. And I'm on the water 4-6 days a week. You can't beat it!
It is such a great presentation. Thank you for sharing your experience with it!
Yup
Hi Steve,
What weight of line were you using? It was invisible.
That was a 10 lb fluoro leader. Great question!
Thanks Steve!
Steve- Throw a Sugar Cube covered in scent with strands of rubber threaded thru- They might think its one of those new baits the Japanese tackle guys have invented!!
I was fishing a hellgrammite and crawfish weightless didn't catch anything but did have same followers
For me it's the Yamamoto Ika.
Great stuff Steve! What's your favorite September lure for scattered Bass?
Great question. I have a lot of confidence in either the soft jerkbait or swim jig to find scattered fish and if those don’t work I will try a suspending jerkbait to try and locate them.
@@SteveRogersOutdoors Thank you, my problem is, I have no confidence in either of those so I end up sticking with my jig.
Curious what a beaver bait looks like?
You fish those on a baitcaster or spinning reel?
For these I had them on baitcast equipment. Great question!
I like the 2.5 yamamoto yamatanuki. The only con is little fish chomping the tail off.
That is a great little bait!
Weightless Trick worm.....5/0 Berkely fusion worm hook....
Please do a video Steve on the appearance of florocarbon, monofilament, and braid underwater
@@doughobe8006 this one has should answer some of your questions: th-cam.com/video/fRpO4Blwj8U/w-d-xo.htmlsi=HHicpMWdb1zRz2iU
Sometimes changing your fall rate is the difference between being skunked and filling the boat
It definitely can make a huge difference. It's something I try to get better at each time out, but it is so easy to fall back into old habits.
Ika all day
I like to texas rig my chatterbaits.
As usual....you have such a great way of describing small adjustments that can result in better success. The Texas Rig is the technique I'm most confident with. But I've never tried it weightless. When I want to slow things down, I usually go to a wacky rig....which has a higher snag rate, especially around those targeted areas. I'll be giving this a try! Thanks
Good luck out there! Let me know how it goes go go for you.
Nothing like a weightless green pumpkin senko caught me a 3lb smallie on one recently
That is a great fish! Lots of fight.
@ oh yea it’s went airborne 3 times in my fight best fight ever out of a 3lb fish
kinda the same principle as the 4 inch ringworm- a soft bite and hook point hidden between the rings-your viewers should hit the local tackle
Shops and see if they can find some-Good for slow days- and odds are most fish in the lake have never seen these before !!
I agree! Odds are the bass will be looking at something new to them.
Pretty much snagless
Wonder how those Japanese soft plastics would work in a small river with moderate current….
Definitely worth a try!
Those flat baits take literally forever to reach bottom when rigged weightless. Even the heavier ones. 15 feet or less is doable. Anything deeper, I'm adding a nail weight.
They are incredibly slow. Like you said, they are definitely a shallower target lure unless a nail is added.
Good one, Steve! But hey, they all are!
Sluggo!
Great one!
Don’t forget the poop baits!!!!
I just bought another reel (I have a problem) and it’s going to be my weightless soft plastic rod.
It’s so exciting to get a new rod and reel for a specific presentation. Good luck out there!
@@SteveRogersOutdoors thank you sir. Tournament coming up this weekend, so hoping to place
Does anyone remember the French fry
I do! I still have a lot of them.
Doug Garrett big secret was a texas rig gitzit, no weight.
Great lure!

Thanks! I do have links down in the expanded description section, but I don’t mention them very often. Thanks so much for watching!
