  • I drove Devon General LH No 127 when it was based at Newton Abbot in the 80s. I re-discovered it in it's new life at Guildford (Surrey, UK), took a trip on it and made this VHS video film.
The AEC bus that appears at Guildford Bus Station at the beginning of the film is an ex-Blackpool AEC Swift (and not a Reliance as I state in the soundtrack); a rare bird as not many Swifts were ever sold outside London.

The days when bus driving was a good job and drivers could have good banter. Sadly these days the job is horrible.

    Leyland 400 or Perkins engine?

My old fleetlist gives 127, and indeed most Devon General LH buses, as having a Leyland 0401 engine.

How random that I should come across this video. Thats Keith, the Hoppa Shoppa bus driver. He used to drive us kids home from town every evening in the 90's. He would actually let us smoke at the back of the bus, and he always took the speed humps on Park Barn Drive at speed for our amusement. Sadly many of the bus drivers in Guildford were bullies and so often gave Keith a hard time. One driver even deliberately reversed his bus into the Hoppa Shoppa while it was parked in the end bay.

Hi Shane...... How ya doin'!....... Crazy Keith here, retired bus driver extraordinaire!!! Although you'd never guess by looking at my TH-cam ID, which is in Hebrew! (that's because I have a lot of interest in Israel) ............ I'm still living in the Woking area, but don't come to Guildford all that much nowadays.......... I was dumbfounded to see myself on TH-cam after our son, Richard, sent me the link............... Believe me I'm just a tad older since that video, which amazingly was about twenty-eight years ago - Arrrrrrrrrgh!!!! ................ You're dead right ........... That was definitely Ed ...... He and his mate, Phil, used to travel regularly. Ed lived in the Rydes Hill area & Phil in Park Barn .......... Excellent guys to get on with, both with an atrocious sense of humour, like me !....... The older couple who got off at the shop at Stoughton Methodist Chuch were Bert and Pat, really nice people, and the young lady was Emma, who zoomed off (heaven knows why!) and then zoomed back on again.......... Hope you get to see this, Shane ........... All the very best .............. Keith ......... שלום (shalom) .............. :)

Hey Keith. I never got a notification of your reply, but instead just happened upon it after revisiting this video. Yeah Phil and Ed were good friends of mine, but sadly overtime we all drifted apart. We were all working together at Robert Dyas when we were using the Hoppa Shoppa. I remember you often took the speed humps on Park Barn Drive at quite a rate Haha. Happy days. Hope your well.

@@5hanesBoard Who, ME, Shane???.... Taking speed bumps fast??!!! …. Good heavens! … Perish the thought!!! … OK, I'll own up ……............…. It was great fun :):):)...……… I remember one day I was doing the G2 the opposite way round, ie. anticlockwise, when this woman got on my bus in the Stoughton area and sat in the back seat. She was going to the Royal Surrey. When I pulled up at the hospital she looked a bit rough as she came up the bus. "You did take those humps rather fast, didn't you?..... I am pregnant, and overdue" she said. I remember saying to her "Why on earth did you sit in the back seat? It's the very worst seat you could have ever chosen, in your condition". I honestly hadn't noticed her "bump" when she got on. Oh heck did I feel guilty after she'd got off, but I must say somewhat relieved to say the least!!! …. Cheers Shane, all the best mate...….. Keith …. :) …………….. PS. I notice you said you worked at Robert Dyas. I just wondered if you knew "Big" Brenda who had worked there for years. She was brilliant. Each evening she would catch my 10 to 6 G2 back home to Rydes Hill. Each time she would get on the 1st step, I would learn very heavily to my left side an would say: "Blimey Brenda, I didn't have to look, I just knew it was you!!!". She really was a great sport and never ever took offence. With her and a lot of the other regular passengers (especially Ann), that 10 ro 6 literally became a club. I still miss those days, even now.... TTFN …. Keith ,=.. :)
