  • In this video, I show you my top 10 Essential Keyboard Shortcuts in Sibelius.
    When working with Sibelius, the aim is to work as quickly and efficiently as possible, and keyboard shortcuts help to get the job done fast.
    I'm using Sibelius Ultimate on a Macbook Pro.
    1. R for repeat
    2. Option+click /Alt+click for copy
    3. Command+Shift+B/Ctrl+Shift+B for new bar in score
    4. T for Time Signature
    5. K for Key Signature
    6. Q for Cleff
    7. X for flip (stem)
    8. Command + Up/Down Arrows/ Ctrl +Up/Down Arrows for quick octave transpose
    9. Command+E / Ctrl+E for Expression marking
    10. Command+T / Ctrl+T for Technique
    Look out for a bonus hack at the end of the video!

    Meg, this is brilliant! I loved Sibelius up through v.6, and 7 is driving me batty now that I've had to change over. Note for you & viewers: these hacks also work on a Mac with v.7 (Avid doesn't make 7.5 available anymore, is pushing people to do subscriptions to Ultimate.) You are saving me LOTS of time with these simple shortcuts.

    My favourite is of course ctrl+up/down for a cross-staff notation.

    Great video! I can verify all these shortcuts work great! Thank you! Also if you press CMD+E for entering Expressions, you can also press CMD+(letters of the dynamic), for example CMD+pp and it'll enter a bold text for pianissimo.

    Super-useful shortcuts, thanks very much. One question: I'm using Sibelius 7.1.3 on a MacBook. Simply cannot get expression / technique entering to work. I select a note, press command-E, and get a little square rather than a vertical bar signifying an entry point, and control-click just brings up a short menu showing me shortcuts! Can you help, please?! Thanks.

    • @MusicHackswithMeg
      @MusicHackswithMeg  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, never heard of that one - that’s super weird! Do individual expression shortcuts work? Like command-p for piano, command-f for forte etc?

    • @lloydbotway5930
      @lloydbotway5930 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MusicHackswithMeg Yes, command-p / piano, etc. I finally figured it out: Pressing command-E makes a little square appear; then clicking or dragging that square makes a text box appear; then right-clicking brings up the menu of the various expression marks. Extraordinarily inconvenient, compared to the Windows PC version!! But thanks for the reply.

  • @conradsaxmelody
    @conradsaxmelody 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Question...why can't I get all key signatures in Sibelius especially when the song your writing is for example in G# Major rather than using The Altinate Key Signature which is Ab?

  • @sunrisecountyartsinstitute
    @sunrisecountyartsinstitute 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Meg, while I'm kvelling with delight at having found you: do you have a hack for modulating /transposing within a score? All the darned app does is introduce a new key signature, but then it doesn't change the key of the notes that follow. And of course to choose All would change the original key too...

    • @MusicHackswithMeg
      @MusicHackswithMeg  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! There is a hack for that! Can’t remember off the top of my head but I’ll have a look and let you know!

    How do you create a multi rest measure with Sibelius Ultimate? I have a Mac too and its not working as described. Is there a keyboard shortcut for that too?

    • @MusicHackswithMeg
      @MusicHackswithMeg  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Creating multi rests in a measure can be done several ways - select the whole measure and then select a note value, the first few rests should split, but if you keep doing it then the whole measure should divide into your chosen rest values. Otherwise select the whole note rest in an empty bar, and select the individual rest values as you go along, making sure not to assign a pitch. Sorry, bit tricky to describe without showing but I hope that helps.

    • @markdjordjevic1378
      @markdjordjevic1378 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m sorry I messed up in describing my question. I’m trying to find out how to create a multi BAR rest where I have let’s say 6 bars rest and want to have the number 6 show over a measure. Does that make more sense?

    • @MusicHackswithMeg
      @MusicHackswithMeg  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@markdjordjevic1378 Ah yes, that makes more sense. Shift+Command+M will toggle Hide/Show Multi-rests. This is something you'd do at the end of your note-inputting for the score, as it will affect the whole score. If you wanted multi-rests on individual parts, you'd have to separate out the parts first, and then use Shift+Command+M. :)

    • @MusicHackswithMeg

      You can customize shortcuts on a laptop for Sibelius, but no default shortcut without a full alpha-numeric keyboard. Here’s a video on how to customise your shortcuts th-cam.com/video/uoweCmIiz_4/w-d-xo.html

    Hi Meg, Jan from the Netherlands here. Really useful, thanks! I'm a long-time Sibelius user (switched from Finale around 1923) and didn't know the alt-click technique, so there you go; there's always something new to discover. Maybe I can return the favour by telling you about another not very well-known technique.
    Suppose you've got a musical phrase with the correct rhythm, but wanna change the pitches. What I used to do was: select every note and move it up and down with the arrow keys. But there's a shortcut for this one, and a big timesaver (as I'm very lazy too):
    Select the first note from the fragment, and type ⇧ ⌥ N. After that, you can just type the new pitches you want on the keyboard. Sibelius will automatically jump to the next note.

    • @MusicHackswithMeg

      Hi Jan, awesome, thanks for the shortcut, I didn’t know about that one - I’m going to give it a go!
