Disagree with that last step. You should not need to use the buffing wheel. To get that razor sharp edge, you can just use the finer grit of sandpaper. Also, establishing the flat back of the chisel, using that buffing wheel will round it over once again.
The real reason for using a grinding wheel, is to establish a slight hollow, so the edge will be extremely sharp, and easy to re-sharpen by hand, on a flat surface.

I don't get it on the wooden bevel gauge that is set when the heal touches the grinding wheel. It seems you could have all kinds of angles where the heel of the gauge touches the wheel. Shouldn't the bevel gauge angle lie flat on the wheel?

What size of grinder stone do you use?
80 grit
3/4" thick x 6" diameter
Use a low rpm grinder.
Many sandpapers were killed during the making of this video, holy smokes...

Why have the water?
To cool the chisel down, if you get it too hot you'll undo the tempering (process to make the steel hard) and it won't hold a sharp edge.
If you're just going to use sandpaper and a honing jig, why waste time with the grinder?
The grinder provides the primary bevel of 25°, using an 80 grit wheel to remove a lot of steel relatively quickly, and giving a hollow ground.
The jig with sandpaper provides a shorter secondary bevel of 30°.
The stropping compound furthers the process to get a mirror, razor sharp edge.

man.... somebody needs a wet stone,when you put pressure on the board,i could see it bow,so you end up with a curved edge

1. bench grinder ,
2. wet stone course side ,
3.wetstone fine side ,
that's it! your expensive chisels will love you for ever if you get rid of the sandpaper believe me.
first thing you learn in carpentry school and being a carpenter for 22 years still use it and it still works perfect for me
wet stone... use a simple oil or water?? At school we called the wetstone and oilstone...

Leon Meertens • Some people prefer an oilstone. It’s just a bit more maintenance. I’m fine with H2O. From there I’ll often use a burnisher, then hone with a leather strap.

I'm a knifemaker. This is an example that most woodworkers don't know shit about sharpening.
... that's a bit of an assumption about woodworkers, but i would never use this method. I'm surprised though that he could shave with that edge
I'm a surgeon but... Just thought the same. I'll stay with my water-stone. At least, it won't de-temper the edge... But hell... When some one LOVES sharpening, why not? The blade will probably get dull the first time it contacts a workpiece, but again what a great opportunity to give Mr. Highspeedgrinder and the sandpaper-boys another turn?

Woodworking tools are not sharpened like knives are. Totally different geometries.

years back I tried a lot rubbing chisel on stone to sharpen it. But it didn't happen.

What's a GOOD or BETTER way? Do you have a video? I'm not doing too bad with the few chisels I have, but I'm looking for at least a better edge than what I'm working with. I'm losing my eyesight and everything seems to take longer than it did. Thanx in advance, hope you're still out there, I see it's been a year gone by.
This technique only works on chisels in good condition. Anybody can put bevel on easily. .the back us the real problem

Yeah, nothing good is simple ... unless we're talking about a sunset or a dog.
I've never really understood the mania of wanting chisels sharp enough to shave hair when they're used to shave wood - which is much harder.
The sharper a chisel is the quicker it will lose the edge - that is why sharp enough to cleanly shave wood is sharp enough.
Also, I would avoid leaning over your buffing wheel while it's running.

Started to get back with some hand work and models too. This was always the problem I remember before, all this sharpening and other things. It takes away from actually working at your hobbies. If you are a professional wood worker, yeah, then no problem, it's your job. But, if you do it on weekends or whenever you have free time this is a waste because you will never get them razor sharp. If you aren't a pro (getting your income from it) and you can sharpen like a pro then you just have "something" with sharpening. If not a pro you shouldn't be good at it because most of us that do "hobbies" usually do many hobbies, thus, WE ARE NOT PROS. We shouldn't have to waste our time, we want to build. And if you have the time then you need to get a life and try different things.
Someone please invent a machine where you put the tool in and voila (1 minute) it's done and I could do other things while they are sharpening.
Sorry so long.
P.S. And stop charging the price of a used car for a quality chisel and almost anything made in the U.S. I spoke to many old timers (but they weren't that old when I spoke to them and just listened sometimes too) Guys, with average paying jobs were able to buy U.S. tools with no problem and afford a family and pay the rent and some say pay the rent for a small apartment for your mistress too (lol;hahaha). Something happened after the 1960s, we started going down for some reason. Sorry about the soap box.

NEWER EWER EWER sand your chisel a cross EWER because rest of that beautiful process going to waste , You created microscopic grooves ( canyons) a cross Top of Your chisel ( Yes flat part is top of the chisel , in americas you have tendencies switch normal order of things than rest of the world Joiner vs plainer , dates and addresses etc ) and those groves will at best make Your chisel dull faster , IF very difficult to sharpen
that will teach You in first year of woodworking school , and if You do that as apprentice on job You Will be FIRED on spot

Perhaps , but i now how to sharpen my tools , I got school for that , we do teach people trades,.......my language does not use W much sorry........... Oh well , I newer went to English school , I work since first day i come to US. but I communicate in six other languages thou

If you want to know how to sharpen tools-don’t listen to this TOOL! Watch Rob Cosman or Paul Sellers. These craftsman will show you how to sharpen chisels or planes the CORRECT way. Don’t ruin them on a grinder!
