  • I broke out the heavy gear and big baits today. The Brazos is the biggest river in Texas and holds some really big fish!

This is the first of your videos I’ve watched. Your commentary kept me interested, sharing your knowledge of equipment, fish habits, baits and rig setups were great! What got me the most was not only the respect you pay to the river but of the fish themselves. Happy fishing young man!

Rod/reel combo with fishing kit as an emergency setup th-cam.com/users/postUgkxntWMOZsO1Zfv-pdn_XuffEtNkTYAYu4Z recommend but started to use this every day. The rod is thick and seems durable. I keep it neatly tucked into a regular backpack all the time with my fishing gear, and can grab it anytime, put it on my back and go anywhere. I just read in another review that the rod length below the reel is adjustable as well, so I will try that too for even more portability. Probably the best setup I've ever owned. I lost the cap for the eyelets, but no big deal since I still have the black cloth sheath that came for the pole and I use that. Very portable and high quality.

Awsome video. I really had fun watching it. I catch a few alagatorgar gar when flathead fishing also. Actually I lost a good rod n reel last year because I forgot to set my drag and I had my back turned. It pulled the rod out of the holder and drug it thrugh high grass and weeds ripping roots out of the ground. In not sure what did it but it had to have been over 30 or 40 lbs. I had 50 lbs test on it. Anyway thanks for sharing. And I'm all pumped up to rip some lips lol.

Here on kentucky lake land between the lakes we catch long nose and alagatorgar gar all the time when fishing for catfish. Kentucky lake is full of them. They can get as big as 8 ft 150lbs. Biggest I caught so far was 5 ft. I didn't have a scale with me to weigh it but just a wild guess I'd say it was at least 70 lbs

Regardless of how some people feel. I think a fish that has lasted as long as a gar in history has figured out there could be something waiting to catch it. I know a gar is considered prehistoric this is why I think they run with bait for awhile before taking it. Yes they have some great tackle defeating hardware but I feel as though they have figured out that a bait might just be a trap. Just a feeling I have with all the hours I have fished this species. Let them take as much as they want. You better have a fat reel!

Where the two currents meet is what we’d call “the crease”. 🇬🇧
You’d expect fish to sit in the slower water on the edge of the faster water, waiting for food to come by.
The halibut pellet could be fished on “a hair rig” if you know how to tie a “knotless knot”. You’d need to prepare your hooklengths in advance though
Enjoyed that video, thanks. The rope trick I found interesting. Not seen that before, we don’t use ropes here, we’d just use a net. Why no net?

I actually wouldn't recommend trying to copy exactly what I'm doing in this video, did a whole lot poorly then.
What I do now is 80 or 100lb braid (Sufix) tied to about 8 feet of 100lb monofilament (to stop the fish from cutting the line on rocks, etc) with a FG knot with a rizudo finish the way Briggsy does it. The mono is tied to my swivel (150lb or 200lb) with a uni knot with 4 or 5 wraps. Then the leader is about 2-3 feet of 135lb pvc coated wire crimped to a Team Catfish circle hook.. I don't use treble hooks anymore.

That is interesting about that dietary study which found alligator gar eat a lot of tilapia. I watched an old documentary on alligator gar ecology (also by tex parks & wildlife i believe) and they found during their study that channel catfish and gizzard shad made up the majority of their diet. So i wonder if tilapia were introduced since that older video and i guess they've become a new favorite food source for the gar.
