I felt so bad for Buster here. He had to feel so uncomfortable in this situation. You can see it so clear. But his face lights up when Eleanor comes out to sit with him. He is just like a little boy. He loves her so...
It is great that all of us Buster fans can "get together" like this and watch fantastic records of his past. How could someone as thoroughly decent as Buster be abused by his exes like that? I have the fan crush on the "baby" that does the snake dance and the backflip in the lifeguard outfit. I have unending love & respect for the man that endured it all and was the performer that he was. Much love to Eleanor for saving him and loving him as deeply as she did.
While I wish Ralph Edwards would have spoken less too, remember that Buster was not only shy in crowds of people, but never liked to watch his films or clips with an audience! There was no way for him to be comfortable here, and it shows, but I AM glad that with this show, among others, he was able to know how much he was loved. Eleanor and Buster are so adorable!
Buster hated crowds and was very shy with people he did not know. Edwards put him on the spot many times even embarrassing him. What a jerk he was! Buster was a gentleman. Thank Heaven Eleanor asked him to marry her so he could be happy for the last 26 years of his life. He was a true gentleman.
What I keep hearing is how kind and what a great man he was to say he is the greatest comedian of all time would be like saying ice creme is cold.....DUHHHHHHHH
Not sure how I found myself watching this. He seems overwhelmed by everyone saying such kind things about him, but look at the way he comes alive when his wife comes out.
yeah he was almost deaf. Must have been torture to have to pretend he knew what they were saying. What an awful host Ralph Edwards, his condescending remarks... Love the way his wife breezes in, takes over so he has a chance to regain his composure. What a restrained and polite man. Buster was the greatest.
Ralph Edwards tactfully avoids revealing Keaton's alcoholism of many years. Keaton turned to alcohol when the movie bosses shuttered his career; the alcohol destroyed his marriage. But Keaton had a comeback of sorts later in life, and was recognized as the genius he was. Red Skeleton's tribute here is really touching. "This Is Your Life" was the first--and most remarkable--reality TV show!
@ jackie S : Alcohol didn't destroy his marriage But That Witch, 1st wife Nate Did, Took all His money, his two sons and even illegally had their birth names of Keaton taken off their birth certificates and even changed 1st sons name Joseph to Jimmy. She and second wife were no more than gold diggers and UNTALENTED WITCHES!!!
It’s amazing that now we have such beautiful restorations of his movies. Those copies shown in the 1950’s were awful. You can see good prints on YT, but the best is from Criterion Collection or Kinos Lorber. Many of his films can be rented on YT.
@glassoniongirl64: If anything positive came out of this show, it's that it proved what a gentleman Buster was. This episode says a lot about his character in that he was able to sit through all of Ralph Edwards' crap politely without getting visibly angry.
I wanted to smack Ralph Edwards! But it was so sweet when Eleanor came out and they kissed like that. Too bad Virginia Fox didn't make it. I wonder if they tried to locate some of this other leading ladies.
Ralph Edwards and his corny comments throughout... Ugh. Buster must have really hated this, but was a good sport about it. He lights up when Eleanor comes out :) Thanks for posting. Never saw this before!
@Lecy1982 Maybe Red said that because Buster didn't tell him that the gag he describes is straight out of "The Cameraman". Of course it's funnier when it's silent and with Buster doing it. Still Red is at least nice.
I do wonder how much of this Buster's just nodding along to for the sake of being nice. He was hearing impaired for most of his life and would never ask anyone to speak up so not many people knew about it. I wonder whether he can hear a lot of what these people are mumbling.
Thanks for posting this. But i still know Ralph Edwards did everything for Ralph Edwards and made all his guests uncomfortable by being so condescending. He loved being like that. Talking openly about a persons problems, making the guest have to relive the incident. I bet Edwards got off on it. Personally I HATE the Subhuman and that"s my own opinion!!! How dare he treat Buster Keaton like that. Buster did more with his little finger than Edwards did with his Whole life!!!
Interesting how people dislike Ralph Edwards but if it had not been for him dozens of former motion picture stars that the world had forgotten would have died in obscurity. Instead, thanks to "This Is Your Life" broadcasts such as this one people like Keaton, Helen Kane, and Bebe Daniels were able to get back in the public eye. And thanks to Edwards, and the show's team, who as any student of period television would know were presenting the show in contemporary 1950s style, we are able to see these legends still today.
@ Dan Curran : BULL CRAP and the world did't forget Buster Keaton. For the world was getting smarter and going back to see the GREAT CONTRIBUTIONS BUSTER and Others had made. Buster was NEVER FORGOTTEN and was always in the public's eyes.!!!! You need to rethink that statement . Ralph Edwards did for only Ralph Edwards and was always CONDESCENDING to the Guests !!!!!!!!!
A lot of enforced awkwardness, is what we forget these shows could produce. Not sure there was mutual pleasure in reuniting with the entirety of these visitors from his past. But good humor commands us to overlook that. One would hope that the more tactful of the production staff were vetting the guests based on their current status with Mr. Keaton.

I know you can't really judge an actor by their films and TV shows. But I think Buster Keaton seems like a genuinely wonderful human being.
Love how Buster just silently lets everyone adjust his tie, wipe tears from his eyes, pat him, and hold onto his arm.

Buster was CRAZY NUTS ! Tough as they come !! ....WOW those stunts he did !!!

I just want to hug him! He looks so uncomfortable there.

I love that smooch that Buster and Eleanor exchange. Very sweet.

"In the most dangerous scenes, he would never, never use a double."
Donald was good in "How green was my valley" I didn't know he directed in his younger days how cool!!!
Thanks for posting this. You can tell Buster was a genuine person. Is there a part three?
Thank you, Golden !

Better that he couldn't hear Edwards
it is inhuman, cruel, stupid humorless this host with his comments to such a decent human being. beyond belief how he was tv personality.

buster cringed, when he saw that movie of himself when that bluiding when almost missed him.. the host ask buster would he do it again ? him said no.

Oh my goodness I don't think I've ever seen anyone more bashful! He's soooo embarassed! And yes, the host is making me cringe.
Maybe Buster caused all his problems, as he said, but I want him to be happy and I believe that he was happy with Eleanor.
Ralph's commentary during the clips almost made them unfunny. Almost.
