The Archetypal Wounding Of Men | James Hollis PhD ~ ATTMind 75

  • If we want to build a better world, one that is free of the power complexes that subjugate others, it behoves us to address the root of those power complexes. In particular regards to the patriarchy, if we fail to see both the function and the origins of the patriarchy system in the psyche of man, we worsen it at best and, at worst, become power-obsessed oppressors ourselves.
The deep wounding of men by way of a toxic society is at the root of this interview with James Hollis PhD., whose ideas gave me stability in myself as I came to grapple with the pain, shame, and "quiet desperation" I have been carrying in my own life as a man.

James Hollis is truly an illuminated man. I agree with him that you need a strong ego to approach the unconscious. When you dissolve an ego, you need a strong ego to come back to. Otherwise you're truly just adrift in the world, with no ground or footing.

Thoughtful questions, thoughtful answers, an excellent interview: I believe anyone honestly seeking solutions to their deepest issues will find Jung, perhaps through James Hollis or perhaps Edward Edinger, and if they don't find Jung, they will find his ideas articulated by someone, somewhere in time. It is the masculine and feminine balanced in each of us that solves our problems. The responsibility is put exactly where it should be....on the individual.

The tribalism and brotherhood of men talked about in Under Saturn's Shadow was really fascinating to me how tribes would kidnap men in the middle of the night to wound them to separate them from their mother. But Eden Project and the relationship you have with yourself determining the quality of relationships you have with everyone else is a more important message in my opinion. I totally agree with your book about how the psychedelic experience is a projection where one can interface with their emotions. I read Decomposing the Shadow in 2015. I read James Hollis' books in 2012.

The child stuck with the unlived life of the parent:
    How about this from Rilke:
Somewhere to the East There’s a Church
Sometimes a man rises from the supper table
and goes outside. And he keeps on going
because somewhere to the east there’s a church.
His children bless his name as if he were dead.
Another man stays at home until he dies,
    stays with plates and glasses.
So then it is his children who go out
into the world, seeking the church that he forgot.
    Rilke

I really don’t like how iowaska is separated from other drugs in this discussion. As a person recovering from substance use (psychedelics being a big part of that) I feel like someone listening to this could be harmed by that statement. Substances shouldn’t be made into the catalyst for spiritual enlightenment. Raw, unadulterated painful existence should be the only requirement on this path.

First of all, thanks for having James Hollis on your channel. There is a lot to be learned from our unconscious mind that can definitely be unlocked without the use of psychoactive substances. Jungian psychotherapy can be a good tool for some to access this. However, there was a 15 minute chunk of this interview spent on partisan political editorializing about Trump, gender identity, patriarchy, Jordan Petersen and some other things that have nothing to do with "the archetypal wounding of men" outside of a very loose connection. Hollis has a lot of wisdom to offer and to spend time baiting him into political commentary on pop culture figures or left wing progressive ideas was a waste of time in my opinion. Apart from that, I enjoyed the interview. It was a good introduction to some of Jung's ideas and I hope you continue to explore this topic on your channel.

Perfectly said. I couldn't agree more. Besides the pathetic virtue signaling this was an otherwise great listen. I got the sense that Hollis may be out of the loop on regressive, authoritarian, 3rd wave feminism nonsense. I'd bet he still practices chivalry, lol.
James, you should invite Dr Peterson on ATTM. That would be epic.

I asked those questions because they are relevant to the modern experience of manhood and because they are questions I and other men in my life struggle with and wanted to get his perspective on them because I respect him.
I have emailed Peterson multiple times and have yet to get a response.

Adventures Through The Mind Around 40 minutes, in the same sentence - you mentioned trump, Putin and Jordan Peterson all taking on tribal father roles. Can you see how that false equivalency might seem unfair? Also "smashing the patriarchy" is a dead preoccupation. PC culture is dying thankfully thanks to the uncouth behavior and ideology of the authoritarian left. I've listened to almost every one of the ATTM podcast and am grateful for it. You are definitely the best podcaster in the psychedelic podcast domain. To date, I've only supported one podcast on a monthly basis - Sam Harris' Waking Up. Yours is the only other podcast I've considered supporting. Keep up the good work

I just gave the last 20 minutes a second listen to see if maybe I jumped the gun on my criticism but it actually sounded worse the second time around. Lots of progressive buzzwords being thrown around. To the credit of Hollis, he didn't get off track and managed to right the ship and get back to speaking about the psychology behind the topic and not get caught up in partisan political speech.

    • @jlareaux5504

Tony Starkweather James is usually fairly evenhanded and reasonable. I was also disappointed with primarily the last half hour. Hollis was impeccable tho. It could easily have turned into a resentful and bitter sounding conversation as most far left ideologically driven conversations do...

We could never really expect to get back to raising the children of these cultures en masse like Hollis suggests, which is too bad imo, mostly because of the population explosion. I'd be like trying to put the toothpaste back in the tube at this point. Cheers!

I think characters like Trump are an interesting phenomenon. He certainly has major issues and is a terrible collective-father figure but you need to give the devil his due. He is bold, outspoken, very disagreeable, and has raw power, something that has been slowly bred out of men over the years. The less that inner strength comes from each man and woman the more likely a Putin or Trump will emerge from collective unconsciousness.
Once I connected with my own anger around my father (who was a very angry and wounded man), I then connected with my power too. Too often I stopped myself from doing 'un-nice' things because I lacked that strength which comes from that energy. Funny thing was the 'nice' things like not confronting people wasn't a virtue but a vice because without a sword my only choice was to not fight. Now I can chose and be more thoughtful.
Nietzsche said this quote and Confucius something similar, “Of all evil I deem you capable: Therefore I want good from you. Verily, I have often laughed at the weaklings who thought themselves good because they had no claws.”
The fact that Trump has claws is a big part of his appeal which means he's connected with his shadow, again he's a flawed guy but sometimes we need a bas***d to get things done. Great article called 'Jung and the Trumpian Shadow' written by a SciFi writer which is refreshing: quillette.com/2017/10/02/jung-trumpian-shadow/. Jordan Peterson has this appeal too but he is by far a more balanced person who for many pushes a lot of buttons which means he has something to say.

Peterson jung curiosity or somewhat understanding, is jungian the Alchemist, jungian the gnostic , then the Aion period , dabble often with anima/animus and mother archetype ( With freudian tone), for a jungian Peterson seem closer to Erich Neumann's work, he got somewhat of a psychanalytic transpersonal Philosophy of the authenticity of the self, he seem to focus less on the luminal but it been mentionned, and he sure once in far fetch mode get a grasp of jungian cosmology and prophetic voice. ( this will had been a more precise question to Hollis )

amazing interview, very interesting but i must say , about the interviewer, seeing only the "machismo" on the "far right" and not in all the radical left extrenist cheguevara wanabes is quite narowminded. masculinity in general has been canceled by the left and this os why most men seeking to improve theire lives find guidance in someone like jordan peterson, and sure there is a toxic sidw to masculinity but that is somthwing that has been with us forever. , dont let politics get in the way of enlightment. there is enough irrationality and projection on both sides of the political spectrum.

Great podcast! I underestimated your work by just thinking of you as "another psychedelic podcaster". I have very recent experience on this subject I'd like to share, after I say this: and I hate to be " THAT GUY ", but I'm really not. Your guest is slightly weighed down by feminist and patriarchy theory while supposedly recognising oppression of men. Whose " archy" is it anyway? Has this guy never read Woman's Inhumanity to Women? Is he unfamiliar with the fact that women held power as much as men outside of Judeo-Christian and Islamic culture? Notably in my ancestors Brehon social framework. Women are as vicious as men and on as many events benefited from this supposed patriarchy - reveled as much as men in the brutish protection of other men. Cancel out this patriarchy business, get back down to the brass tacks of relationships, and you cancel out the unnecessary re-shaming of men. Otherwise it will go way off in the opposite direction and we're fucked for another few generations.
As a man turning 32 this Summer I've finally feel like I've made sense of this big scary world, and almost completely by myself. I've been contemplating my place in history - not as some big man who started a multi billion tech company or won a war, but as a man in a broken lineage and a broken society. My duties. I hosted a Summer Solstice fire, with only myself, a friend in his early 20s, and my mother's partner in his early 50s. We had a complete line of succession. My friend struggling as I had years prior, myself having passed by first Saturn Return, and a man who will soon be an elder. A lot of wisdom and encouragement was shared. Funnily, the following weekend my cousin has his 21st and we sit and have a chat about our shared childhood memories and what it means to be a man.
Point being, if we keep this in mind we'll come to a point where we realise we have life wisdom to share. If you're a young psychonaut like me who's struggling to heal and find their place, KEEP GOING. Generally, the way life goes is that you spend a while figuring out what works from here and there, and one day you realise you're really good and passionate with something. Out of that, life actually starts.

    • @AdventuresThroughTheMind
      @AdventuresThroughTheMind  6 ปีที่แล้ว

These are great comments, thanks. I recently listened to an interview on psychedelics today where the guess suggested that the issue isn't men in power abusing women, it is all gender on all gender violence and the only reason we see the men of power against women is that that is the way society is structured. If women were in greater power within society, they would be the primary abusers. The question for her dropped down to healing our relationships at the relational level and to leave assumptions about gender being a factor is who aggresses behind.
Also, your comments here about coming together at a transgenerational community is so important. I am about to do a weekend with Stephen Jenkinson learning from him about elderhood. I think it is deeply important.

This is so funny: listening to a person that knows what he's talking about (Hollis) and then seeing how all this progressive gender identity BS is being forced upon the subject. You can see how Hollis is also amued by all the LGBTQXYZ* remarks :))

    • @AdventuresThroughTheMind
      @AdventuresThroughTheMind  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Gender Identity politics are the politics of our current era. I see the issues in them as well, but there is also value in there too. I asked Hollis those questions in those ways to represent the modern discourse on these modern issues so as to provide him with the context to respond to that form of politics with his wise and thoughtful manner. Unlike much of the self-righteous anti-left culture of youtube, even if I disagree, I feel it valuable to give space for divisive politics around gender to be addressed or deconstructed. Rather than just acting like a self-righteous shithead shouting into an increasingly polarized and hateful echo chamber, thinking myself morally superior.

Exactly my thoughts. Why mixing up problem with modern gender identity (created by scholars) with talking about men issues, it is purposefully diluting problems of one sex. You can clearly see that the guest is just silently nodding because what else can he say... And btw I can clearly see a lot of jealousy towards Peterson, I also see a lot of insecurity projected in this topic. So there’s is a spectrum of gender expression and so masculinity that we have to accept, but Peterson is of course not the one we should consider a proper form. It is called intolerance. Although I consider this whole conversation quite interesting.
