HIKING NEAR NYC - Ellenville Fault Ice Caves & Verkeerderkill Waterfalls | Minnewaska State Park

- For hiking near NYC, you can venture about 2 hours north and explore the chilling Ellenville Fault Ice Caves, gawk at the 187-ft high Verkeerderkill Waterfalls all within the beautiful Sam’s Point Area within Minnewaska State Park. This 7-mile out-and-back day hike also has you venture through the globally rare ecological community of dwarf pitch pine barrens along the Shawagunk Ridge and saunter through the mystical, verdant oak and fern covered forest all while enjoying spectacular views of the Shawagunks Mountains regions and Catskills Mountains.
If you’re visiting New York or live in New York and on the prowl for a new hiking adventure, you can’t go wrong choosing this day hike as it has it all from caves, crevices, to soaring cliffs!
ℹ️TIPS:
There is a $10 parking fee that can be paid by card at a ticketing kiosk at the Sam’s Point Preserve Visitor’s Center.

do you think its safe for dogs?
@@fgallardo506 The general trail seems safe for dogs, but scrambling up and down the boulders may be difficult. It likely depends on the size and health of your dog. Please check out the park's website for more info if you're thinking about hiking with your dog. Stay safe and be well!
So Cool! I grew up looking at Sam's Point from Pine Bush, in the valley. In high school, we used to climb the mountain trails just to sit on the large flat rocks that make up the point. You could see the Hudson River LOL! (just kidding, but it felt like that). There's a huge reservoir near Ellenville, too, I think it's above Cragsmoore near the convent. So big it actually has waves. Lots of shale and flint, American Indian artifacts. Texas, where I live now, is great but no maple trees or dogwood :(
Back in the day, we used to hang out at Minnewaska too. Not the park, just hike in until we found a waterfall.

Great video and thanks much for the post! I was there early 1990's and the ice was present in the middle of summer. There was a big door sealing off the icy section if I remember correctly. So unique; love the Gunks and Sams Point also :)

I've done this hike. The Ice caves were so much fun. The falls made me feel like I was about to die. It felt like a year trying to get to it. I drank all of my water because it was so hot. Then all I had on the way back was a bottle full of creek water to pour on my head and two other strangers because they were about to pass out from the heat and dehydration. We vowed to never in our lives return to those falls. Not worth it. But we are going back to the ice caves this week. They're amazing!

One of my fave places, Minnewaska State Park. Only place I missed was the ice caves because they were closed. I was so bummed. Hoping to get back into hiking this spring and make it my goal to get back up there! Mohonk is wonderful too.

From May till mid june is best for the falls. Also will be more ice in the caves. You should ask the locals about the area .

exactly, there is another big ice caves in Ellenville that required a permit to hike there. This one is just a little toy.

Hi Alberto, thanks for checking out this hiking video! At the 00:15 timestamp, we listed that the trail is an Out-and-Back (although the just the Ice Caves portion is more like a Loop). If you only do the Waterfalls trail it's strictly Out-and-Back. Hope this helps and happy hiking!

Sorry to break it to you but that's not the famous Ellenville Ice Cave. That cave in on the other side of the mountain and has a lot more snow and ice although it no longer has wooden stairs or ladders.
Oh that's strange to hear about that not actually being the correct Ellenville Ice Caves. When we did this hike, in July 2019, it was hot and thought it seemed logical at the time that most of the ice/snow would have melted to some degree. Though, a bit curious though why the entrance area for Sam's Point Area of Minnewaska State Park Preserve has information and signage signaling the Ice Caves and when we got on the trail we continued to see signs for the Ice Caves up until we reached the descent. If you have instructions or directions for the actual hike down to the Ellenville Ice Cave, we'd love to know so we can do the proper hike! How do you get to that other cave? Coordinates?

Sorry David those are the commercial ice caves they where at. The ones you are talking about are on the other side of the ridge, if I'm correct. The other ice caves are closed due to to much foot traffic.
Did NY State Parks make you get a permit to do this video? I recently reached out to them because these trails were closed and I wanted to see if I could get access to shoot my own iphone/go pro video there for a TH-cam channel I'm starting. Turns out the trail is now reopened but I stumbled into a bureaucratic trap. They're telling me that unless you are shooting video for personal use only (like showing to friends and family) you have to get a permit and that they'll charge you $400 minimum for a permit. Ridiculous. I've shot video on so many park trails before and never had anyone question me.

hahl j let them enjoy the commercial ice caves. The reason the ellenville fault ice caves are so great is because they are lesser known and a bit harder to get to. You are correct that these suck in comparison, in the real fault you can find tons of snow and ice in the summer months.
Ugh, you people are the reason that we have traffic on the weekends. Since you love the city so much just stay down there. There's a lot to see where you are LOL. Kind of kidding but I'm serious about the annoying traffic bit. Some of us live up here to avoid congestion and large crowds
You know you can just live up here for and extremely decrease cost of living. You don't have to travel very far to experience the abundance of natural beauty and Wildlife, not to mention you get to do so more often.
Most importantly, you don't have to clog up the Thruway and Parkway for those of us trying to drive home on a Friday afternoon.
Sorry just needed to vent my frustration to someone. It's difficult to distinguish between the people traveling home from work and the people coming up from the city to sightsee. since I found your video I know which one of the drivers you are now LOL.
