- This is a video to show people that it is possible to fix your basketball if the rubber valve is damaged or leaking. If you like your ball and want to extend it's life watch the video
You will need: 1-2 hemostats, a blunt pushing tool, a dab of shaving cream and some patience
There is a replacement tool called Tachikara valve replacement tool that may be interesting to look up

Bernard, I used your advice: I sacrificed a lesser basketball so that I could salvage the valve for my leather basketball. Thank you. I didn't have your tools, but I squeezed the replacement valve with pliers and pushed it in with a chopstick. Took a few tries. But saved me big bucks
For everyone asking what to do if something is stuck in ball
changing valve I broke a piece of tool I was using and it fell in.
Flatten the ball in a bowl shape.until you can see the inside wall. Then push it back a lil for space. With small lil movements bounce it up and down ,side to side. Took about 20 minutes but I was able to see the piece. Maneuver it with a long needle to where I could see the end. Pulled it out with a pair of locking clamp pliers
Beautiful! Got out the broken needle with wire and sticky tape, after removing the valve. Fun Fun Fun!

I guess it is the same thing in terms of steps to replace it. But, the problem is that I could not the valve. Do you think any would work?
Ok so far you need one or two small hemostats to remove the valve as well as a blunt tool to help the new valve slip into place like a non cutting cuticle pusher (works like a shoehorn for the valve)
Hey Bernard, Thank God I found your video explaining all of this. I can't imagine throwing away a Basketball I had so many memories with. The look and texture of a Broken-In Basketball give it character too. It's a waste to get rid of a ball because it doesn't retain air and has a valve issue. Anyways I found this on Amazon and wanted to ask you if these are the right valves for a basketball of if they're similar to the ones you used. Are these the right ones I should buy?

Maybe. The vlaves have a different shape on a football. If the valve is not fused to the rubber carcass and there isn't too much undercut on the valve then yes maybe
I have a Spalding Neverflat in/out basketball. When I pierced the valve to make way for the pump needle I actually used the pump needle. So a small piece of the valve's rubber is in the basketball and it's annoying because I can feel it bouncing around in there when I dribble the ball.
If only I can remove the valve, get the scrap piece of rubber out then put the original valve back. I hope I can remove the valve without damaging it...

What if the thing that the pin is place when inflating went inside the ball?
The top of my valve is off centered...took a long time to even inflate it.
I wonder, if with time.....it will completely dislodge or if air will leak eventually.
Hmmm, tachikara seem to be the only ones making these replacement valves. I will do more research.
I was lucky enough to have an extra basketball of lesser value that was damaged on a place other than the valve. I basically cut the valve out of the dead ball to put it in the more valuable ball

We have a basketball that is leaking from the side of the valve, not the hole itself. Does this require the valve replacement as well? Or perhaps it needs to be re-seated?
Vadim A hmm. tough one. it's possible that the valve may need to be re seated. or the shape of the valve channel and the valve are not the same

It may be possible that most basketballs have a standard size valve. In my video, I used a Wilson valve to repair a Spalding basketball

My friend just pushed the valve inside the basketball and the ball naturally emptied, any way to retrieve the valve from inside?
My valve tore off while trying to remove it. The ball was flat when I tried to remove it. I think a pressurized ball might help to push out a valve while pulling from the outside.

no i left the needle and the whole needle in ball after i deflated. it not inflate. but i went and research your replacement and got an idea to put rubber cement in the valve because i not find replacements. and it worked. i just shot some glue rubber cement f rom my bike patch kit in the hole and then put the needle in to swish it around and now my ball is ok. so if the valve for some reason come away from the ball walls and leak out that is why . try my solution first and put in some glue.. it might only also be a slight map adjustment of the valve saved me 35.oo for a new ball . thanks

The form or mould of the valve needs to be changed to facilitate its entrance, kind of cone shaped at the end.
If that were the case it would be much easier to accidentally push the valve all the way into the ball.

What ball was that which you did the replacement on? Almost looks like an older official NBA game ball (real leather) which is the one I have and looking to replace the valve on.
yes it is an older NBA game ball. I have another one in mint condition with a new valve replaced. as soon as I went to pump it it leaked air so I took it out and replaced it with a new one
Good to know, as I'll be doing the valve replacement on the same ball. Funny thing is on my other older NBA game ball which is well over a decade old, the valve is still going strong!

that's a tough one. it probably rattles around in the right? I've done it before where I use a special tool called an alligator forceps but I would only recommend it if the ball has a lot of value to you. it's a lot of work but it's possible

does the air easily come out of the ball? you can get it out with an alligator forceps. it's like a really long tweezer. I've had to do it and it took me days to do. you basically shake the ball with the hole facing up and your hand on the bottom. when you feel the piece above your hand you pinch the basketball at that spot and then you use the forceps blindly to pick up the valve. if you manage to grab I you have to be careful not to drop it. might be easier to get a new ball though

If the shape is changed it means that the fibers outside the rubber is damaged. The ball is better for the garbage
the air comes out from the sides of my valve, not the actual hole where the needle goes.

Bernard Mayantz Hi Bernard. Any tips on getting the valve when it's rattling inside the ball? Also, are the 8 inch forceps the best tool for this job?
Yeah that's tough but it is possible. What I did was pinch the basketball on the opposite side of the valve opening and tried to get that rattling piece in that pinched area. It helps to keep your hand in that area. Then I aimed the alligator forceps toward it until I got it out. Some advice lubricate the valve opening with some shaving cream so the piece slips out with the forceps. Also when you have the piece (hopefully ) make sure to squeeze the middle of the forceps to get a tighter grip on the broken valve. Nothing worse that holding the piece only to have it fall back into the ball. Good luck

It's happened to me where the rubber valve fell into the ball and made a rattling noise. with much frustration I managed to get it out with an alligator forceps.
Can you use a working valve from an old basketball to replace a broken one? And how can you remove it? I opened the ball with a knife, but iI don't want to pull it out incorrectly. Please help.
+Milos2ek yes you can make sure you cut the ball away from the valve that you need. you have to carefully trim the valve "holder" away from the valve with a small sharp knife with the blade facing away from the valve

Adrian OLDGAMESGamer I had to take out an old valve from the inside of my first ball that I replaced the valve on. it rattled inside annoyingly. I managed to get it out with an alligator forceps and patience and an annoyed wife
