How would this compare to 35mm, the new 50mm from America, the old 30mm standard, or the old 40mm from Sweden?

Biggest question I have is what is the benfit of a twisted sideway mounted gun mantlet? Look like extra work for nothing

That wouldn't be a gun mantlet per say, but rather armored cover of gun recoil mitigation system and there are reasons why you'd want it tilted (IMHO in this case it's pivot point attachment strenght & precision, while avoiding vertical positioning, which would limit gun depression/elevation or require cutouts for clearance).
If you want a well known example of this, just look at the bulge that T-34-76 has below the gun. The difference here is that unlike on T-34, this gun has symetrical recoil buffers (like for example 17pdr on Sherman Firefly, but those are completely inside of the turret, or the gun of M56 Scorpion, which is far more visible)

I thought aluminium armor gave off toxic gases when heated?

if you are referring to the old "vaporifics tests" of the bradley, that was essentially just a meme thought up by some guys who had it in for the bradley, plenty of vehicles use aluminium armour and when you start vaporizing it by incoming fire the slight toxicity of aluminium is the last of your worries.
