The British Indie Disco has a long tradition. Dating back to the days of Orange Juice and New Order, through The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays, it was Guitar Pop that moved you, that you could dance to. But after the death of Britpop there was little to groove to. You can sway and sob to Coldplay, you can do a hyperactive pogo to The Libertines but you can’t dance. In 2004 Franz Ferdinand reignited this shimmying fire by again colliding jangle and funk. And they did so with the best love as a battlefield metaphor this side of Pat Benatar. This is New British Canon and this is the story of “Take Me Out.”

I love the powerfully Scottish energy of starting a fight over some stolen vodka, only to then become best friends moments later and start a band together.
The Franz Ferdinand indie disco sound is iconic of my teenage years/early 20’s. I was blasting their songs all the time : Take Me Out and Michael were my favorites. I also was listening to Modest Mouse and Arctic Monkeys a lot. I still think Take Me Out is one of the greatest songs of the 2000’s, it just never gets old. It was heartwarming to hear that Alex Kapranos still likes to play it after 20 years.

I love the transition between opening riff to the main riff.

Idk maybe I'm crazy but I really dont feel the two riffs sound like they belong to two different songs.
i went to one of their shows in argentina, and people started mosh pits and sung with mega power the chorus with made up lyrics because many didnt understand the language but felt it very strong anyways, one of the most invigorating live experiences from a rock band live

Take Me Out sounded like nothing else on the radio, just an awesome stomping chorus. That line when the beat cuts off still gives me goosebumps every time.
it really was.. after what seemed like an eternity with nothing since brit pop died a death in 97/98.. then suddenly, and thankfully guitar music was back and had an incredible song leading the charge.. i miss those days.
Mate we had the drabness of Coldplay and Keane, and (perhaps an unpopular opinion) but The Libertines were whack - could not stand the lead singer. And there was the usual pop dross. This really was a breath of fresh air.

As a bystander of this period of Glasgow and Glasgow School of Art culture, this was a wonderfully on point video essay. People should care about what happened to Glasgow School of Art building, if not the soul of Glasgow, the soul of the soul of Glasgow. It is undeniably a crime against Glasgow, Scotland and the people of Scotland what happened to that building.

Take Me Out is one of those rare tunes that works with just about any crowd. Even my dad likes it.
Classic pop songs can transcend the genre in which they were created. It was interesting to see/hear the variety in the cover versions of this one. It just goes to show that it's a well-written song. Other tracks from the same scene and era just aren't timeless like 'Take Me Out'. They only worked in a specific and limited context.
Franz Ferdinand is one of my favorite bands and they haven’t released a bad record imo. Helicopter by Bloc Party is my personal favorite from this era

I had only herd “Take me out” and I fell in love more after I bought it. Bought, YCHISMB and Tonight
Franz Ferdinand has been always seen as the Take Me Out and Do You Want To guys, while they're easily the best band (at least with the first formation) of all Indie Rock, their discs are beyond amazing, they had the brightest sparks of instruments in their music. It's so sad to see them as a good band while i re affirm they can easily be the greatest of all indie rock music.
A friend of mine was at their tiny gig in our hometown in 2004, just before their debut album, and said: wouldn't it be funny if they broke though and we'd been there? And so it goes. Franz Ferdinand kicked off a fantastic time for me, of almost weekly gigs and new discoveries. So much dancing, so many people, so much good stuff, especially when synthesizers made their comeback. It completely revitalized my love of music. It was amazing.
I remember hearing this in NHL 2005 and liking it a lot, but I don't think I truly appreciated Franz Ferdinand until a few years ago. Thanks to them I still like Bloc Party, Editors, Interpol, Tokyo Police Club, The Strokes etc to this day

TRUE! Saw them live back in the day and I swear me and my friend were the only ones dancing in the venue. It was a multi-act concert. They are so energetic, but I think the crowd was just trying to play it too cool. Had fun anyway!

i was obsessed with Franz Ferdinand when they first came out. dark of the matinee was my jam. they are still one of those bands that lifts my spirits and makes me dance no matter when i hear them. amazing talent and incredible songwriting.
I always thought it had a Swedish pop rock feel to it, never knew they had a swedish producer. I found it similar to the likes of The Hives, Mando Diao, Sugarplum Fairy, and Sahara Hotnights.
Mando Diao definitely took away quite a lot from that scene. I seem to remember the Hives being already around and a bit more mature, like FF itself.

I presume it's at least partly because the band chose to turn down some of the corporate bollocks they were offered and stayed on the independent Domino Records label. They would have sold more on a major label with a bigger marketing budget, but the music wouldn't have been any better. Indeed it often loses its edge.
I still remember when I watched the video of "Take Me Out" on MTV. I bought the album weeks later. Big fan of the band ever since.
I heard about them when Elijah Wood was on TRL! I think he was promoting LOTR and was asked what he was currently listening to. He mentioned a few bands but when he said Franz Ferdinand I perked up. I was like “Huh, a band named after the archduke?”. I was curious so I went to Virgin the next day and found their cd and bought it. I was immediately a fan.
Their first two albums are still such bangers. Love how crunchier they sounded then.
This tune 'Take Me Out" is a bopper and their single from 21' "Bye Bye Billy" is a fine boogie woogie(with a Scots accent) disco tune. "The Pseudo-Brits" The Killers line is a good touch in this btw.

I don't know about others but I absolutely love tempo changes in songs when done right.
I was just listening to "Narcolepsy" by Third Eye Blind the other day and remembered that I originally didn't like it because of the tempo changes - the sudden switches from fast to slow out of nowhere, then back to fast again. But as soon as I said out loud to someone that that was why I didn't like it, I realized, "Oh my god. NARCOLEPSY. WHERE YOU FALL ASLEEP UNEXPECTEDLY. The sudden change is THE WHOLE POINT." I've loved it ever since.
Tempo and key changes can make things interesting, as it's something you already are liking, but with a twist.
I normally find it quite unnerving and it definitely makes dancing quite tricky. This song, plus 'Come on Eileen', as mentioned in the video, are rare exceptions that are great for listening as well as dancing to.

I remember going to buy this album after listening to “Take Me Out” on the radio and it giving me the chills and making me want to dance at the same time! It was what I wanted being in high school! It was so British and so awesome! The whole album was incredible from start to finish and even got the special edition afterwards! I even dressed like them haha I didn’t really fit in many clicks in HS but this was all me! Love all their work since then, their new album is shaping out to be incredible as a Hits album! Love them! Can’t wait to see them live again and they recently trended on Twitter for canceling their tour in Russia! Cheers from Mexico and I hope we get more on this amazing epoch of Post Punk Revival/Garage Rock from the 00’s and Brit Pop from the 90’s! And hopefully on what’s coming next from guitar music!

This video was so well done.. 'The opening notes signal you have less than a minute to get on the dance floor' is a brilliant line. Alex is such a clever frontman. He seemed to have it all figured out before he started and never made a misstep.. Best band of noughties (well, them and the Libs). Thanks for this.

FYI, the original radio edit of Take me out started AT the tempo change, it contained none of the guitar riff at the start.
Radio 1 played only that edit for the first 2 weeks.

Me as a teenager in the 00's, now watching this video in 2022: Found the song 100% because of the first commercial for the PSP.
Awesome video. I had never realized how similar modest mouse's "float on" and franz ferdinand's "take me out" are in terms of groove and in terms of like indie popular rock. Wow!
This album came out the year I was born. My parents used to play it a lot around me growing up, and boy, am I grateful for that. It is still one of my favourite "classic indie rock" albums to date and has aged like a fine bloody wine. Every single track, from start to finish, front to back, is absolutely phenomenal. I can't put into words how much this (along with many other albums from this era) have influenced my taste in music and my musicianship over the years. Thank you for this video, it was brilliant!
P.S. Can't believe I've now heard one of my favourite content creators mention Athlete!! Criminally underrated band and amazing albums too, reckon they're deserving of their own NBC episode now... Either them or Bloc Party, I'm not picky haha!
Dear lord, this makes me feel ancient, but I also love it, because I feel the same way about having grown up listening to my parents' music. It's just that in my case it was the Beatles and the Temptations and the American Graffiti soundtrack.😅 Thank goodness for parents who expose us to great music.

It completely freaks me out that there are people at university these days whose parents got together dancing to the Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Franz Ferdinand. It only feels like the songs were born a minute ago. How can they be adults?!
I had just moved into my house in November of 2003, and had started listening to Comcast's Alternative Music Choice channel. "Take Me Out" was one of the songs I heard a lot in 2004, and I eventually got the album. Frank Ferdinand, The Bravery, Bloc Party, and a few others I can't recall at the moment are bands I liked to call Dance Punk. Not sure if I ever bothered to look that up until now to see that it is an actual term used to describe them.
Along with Mr Brightside, TMO is one of the very best songs of that decade. I still remember buying the single in Camden markets one Sunday arvo having not heard the song and just being blown away when I put it on when I got back to the shared house I was living in.

This was a great video. I love Franz Ferdinand and have since I first heard them in 2004. I am from Canada and it pains me deeply that this bands genius is not more recognized here.
Take Me Out was right up there with Michael for me.
The former is obviously a great pop song, but when I was young I loved how sleazy and homoerotic the latter was.
Alex would even sing “come all over me” in the chorus, live. Edgy little me thought that was so cool.

Franz Ferdinand along with Madness were by far the best live bands i have ever seen in my life. I was soaking wet in my and others sweat after the concert, the energy was so incredible. It wasnt just the lead singer, it was the WHOLE band celebrating and projecting energy to the audience. You know a band is beyond good, when they manage to make you fall in love with songs you heard before but never really sparked.
Through take me out I discovered Franz Ferdinand years ago in my early teens, and I have been a fan of their highly energetic and groovy tunes since then

From The Libs up til 2006 you'd struggle to find one rubbish band. After the atomic explosion of that Monkeys album, labels went into pound sign pupils mode and started signing every soul who could play a chord. All I know is it was an amazing time to be a teenager.
It's been out for almost 20 years, an I literally had no idea they had used the sniper metaphor for the "take me out" expression !
I assumed it was the obvious boy/girl meaning. This brings a whole new level of freshness to the song for me.

I love all the songs played at the end. Clearly show how much of an impact and influence this hit had on indie music reaching mainstream audiences. Even if people never listened to any of those bands other songs they have surely heard those tracks on the radio.
Always loved Franz Ferdinand and have so many memories of their music. I remember buying their CD when I was 12 and listening to it on repeat then years later hearing at the club on a weekly basis when I lived in Seoul, South Korea. I'm hoping I can see them in concert someday.

I'd really love to see you do one of these about The Streets. I know at the peak The Streets were a chart-topping big deal in the UK, but here in Canada (and the US) were at best a short-lived, original-sounding curiousity that left those who were savvy enough to keep an ear aimed over the Atlantic slightly anxious about missing out on something great.
This all happened just a couple of quick/short years after the now massive Strokes made a calculated choice to launch their first EP (and first tour) in the UK, knowing that US audiences would immediately hitch their (band) wagon to the band and claim them at the first whiff of possibly getting scooped.
At worst The Streets were no more than a tiny flashing blip on the radar screen of half-committed, psuedo-anglophillic hipsters, but I always found Mike Skinner to be an unapologetically great original voice and fantastic lyricist, despite the fact that he mostly wrote from a very strictly UK point of view.
Without the marginal ripples left on this side of the pond by things like 'fit but you know it' I think it would have taken even longer for UK Grime as a genre to make any sort of splash over here. It may have even stayed Europe-bound for yet another entire wave and great modern artists like Skepta (for example) would likely still be struggling to find an audience in the new world.
I think Skinner's influence flies exclusively under the radar, and as the Americans bask in the glory of undeserved credit they downplay the true contribution of the British, paralleling what they've done since world war II.
A Grand Don't Come For Free is one of my favorites from that era. I can recite it from start to finish. I hate the fact that most people only remember that bloody ballad.
The song for me holds so many memories! I was 18 years old and loved dancing to this at my local indie club. Every time I hear it now it takes me back there. Love it
When I think of this era, I think of LCD Soundsystem and their offshoot, DFA remixes of acts like Fischerspooner, Chemical Brothers, Metro Area and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. That's the best dance punk ever made, IMO.

I remember seeing this video on MTV 2 for the first time and thinking "What in the world is this Monty Python looking band" and the song just hit me like a bomb went off. What a great song. And it held up!

Ah, Franz Ferdinand...in my late 20s and very early 30s, just a few years younger than Kapranos, this was the last period where I was still young enough to totally be at one with a moment in pop culture, with these guys, Interpol, Editors and so on joining the ranks of my established loves. A lingering side effect even now in my mid 40s is a penchant for skinny ties.
I was hoping you’d use that Song Exploder interview and of course you didn’t disappoint. Love the channel more than anything else on TH-cam and appreciate the level of research done for every single video.
Will never forget going to a “secret gig” held by Kerrang! Radio over a decade ago and being inches from Kapranos et al. while they did a full acoustic set. And later seeing them collaborate with Sparks.
It would be great to see you go into Futureheads, Bombay Bicycle Club, Belle and Sebastian, The Cribs, Bloc Party, Maximo Park and Metronomy some day.

I watched them live in 2009, they played for 2 hours and it is one of the best live performance I have ever seen.
I remember Take Me Out being staple on radio for years and it's still something I go back to as a comfort listen. It wasn't until seeing the songs influenced by it that I realize how much it's permeates music I wouldn't describe myself as a regular listener to, but are all comfort listens that I'll pull up from time to time. I just never would have noticed the connection until you pointed them out.
Great video and I love FF. I was photographing a senior prom in Dunstable, Bedfordshire years ago, where they had a disco playing the usual dance stuff. Depending on the tune, I'd say 20-30 per cent of those attending got up and danced. Near the end of the night, they played the Artic Monkeys 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor' and the whole place exploded! Everybody was up and dancing and because it was on a mezzanine floor, the dancefloor literally started to bounce. It was so bad, a hotel member of staff asked the DJ to stop playing it LOL!
Being from Germany the alternative music scene was a little different: mostly caputed by punk rock and it's asthetics and values ...you kind of dressed down and being a bit stylish was kind of seen as a statement towards superficiality and away from original punk ideas. Music was mostly that, on a content level and on the level of visibility as you consumed a lot of music on tv by video clips.
Then one day, late at night on German MTV I saw the Matinee video and was immediately shocked: What is this? The music's so catchy and tight. The astetics do have some comic vibes and thus have a playful approach. The guys look like ... different! Smart and cool! And it's a breath of fresh air - but is this allowed? Isn't this the complete opposite? What does it stand for? Questions you ask yourself when in high school and trying to figure out something .. :)
Franz Ferdinand, their debut album and hit singles opened up a completely new view on alternative music, it's approach and possibilites. More over even people not interested in alternative music started recognizing and liking it. It just had more to it, a whole new appeal.
I know my memory is limited to a limited view on music at the time but that's the whole point. :) At some point in time you're limited, don't know much and "rules" seem to apply and all of a sudden something shocks that and changes your music landscape and approach for good.
I remember it similarly, in a neighbouring country. I also remember Franz being distinctly non macho, and how attractive that was in a testosterone-fuelled indie music scene.
My friends and I were introduced to Franz Ferdinand by the song "This Fire" which was featured on the soundtrack to Burnout 3: Takedown.
Bloody marvellous! Even though I’m not a huge fan of FF, I appreciate the quality of their songs, this one and Matinee in particular, and thoroughly enjoy the influence they’ve had on subsequent artists. Top video.
Great video....I remember when this song hit the airwaves in 2004.....It was like NOTHING ELSE on the Radio.
2004 was a rough year of transition for me as a youth and that Summer was awesome to make GOOD things happen.
"Take Me Out" and "Float On" were the biggest songs that Summer!

Glad you mentioned Dexys! When I heard the chorus of Michael in the vid I was thrown for how Dexy-like it sounds to me, perhaps with a bit of Falco (of mclusky/Future of the Left) added for some more aggressive energy. Got to add FF to my listening list, never really gave them much of a thought beyond the singles. Great video as usual, can't wait for the next one

The first album was amazing. I bought it on CD when it was released in 2004. My husband bought it for me on vinyl this christmas just gone.

its been so many years and yet each time i hear "take me out" it fills me with such joy and excitement. I cant NOT headbang when the songs starts slowing down for the chorus (in fact i did just that when it played in this video)

I was fortunate enough to see them live in Buenos Aires for free, in 2013. Of Monsters and Men were the opening act. FF played for like an hour and a half, without even stopping. It was an amazing show and I had a ton of fun.
Overall, when I was 15-16 the punk-disco-new wave revival made me interested in postpunk (I'd already discovered punk a bit earlier on), and I have fond memories of listening to Kabul Radio, a local station which played music of this sort, every afternoon while I was doing my high school homework. It is sorely missed.

I use to have that Self Titled Album. In fact, Franz Ferdinand & Take Me Out was the point at which my taste in music fully switched from generally being Dance & Rave Music to Indie. Matinee is another favourite of mine.
