Sony Burano is on a completely different level.
It’s a high end cinema camera designed for solo operators.
Not only records internally 16-bit raw through X-OCN on affordable CF-express cards, it combines IBIS with electronic VND and advanced AF on the same camera which is truly revolutionary.
Alongside the stunning image quality and latitude that it offers through the sensors metadata, X-OCN is also manageable and easy to decode and work with in post production.
For me its quite simply THE dream camera.
If you can invest those 25K, it’s a no brainer really.

The autofocus capabilities are HUGE. It's good to know that you can have that when you need it (fast action documentaries, interviews, run and gun situations). Love that you can buy it and use it as is without any extras.
Agreed! I know a lot of people complain about AF.. but, you can turn it off….. lol
At least in NYC, if you're not using an Alexa, it's a Venice. I personally have not used a RED in over 3 years because of their reputation as a resolution first camera, as well as unreliable power distribution (The last shoot I had with a RED, the DP brought 2 because "sometimes one will shut down unexpectedly"). I think that now Sony has momentum and familiarity in the space and in a smaller package gives me flashbacks to how the Alexa Mini was also able to become so successful after the Alexa Classic. I've got my preorder in and excited to see what's in store for the Mini Venice
When I saw the Burano you were the first person that came to mind honestly.IMHO you are like the perfect Poster Boy for this case usage.

Yo, I feel the exact same way about my FX3 vs my FX6s. I LOVE THE FX3, it's probably my favorite camera I've ever owned. The longer I shoot (20+ years) and the older I get, the smaller my rigs are. This new area of tiny box cinema cams is like a blessing for guys whose backs are destroyed from lugging around 25 lb cinema rigs (even with an EasyRig). Tempted to sell my RED Gemini for the Komodo X, or maybe even the Burano.
I'm just glad I'm not the only youtuber exporting in 2:1 aspect ratio
What amazed me about the Burano is that it is very lightweight and comfortable to use. The viewfinder is great. The ibis is also very good, without warping the edges with wide angle lenses. For run & gun documentary filmmakers, that camera seems like the ultimate solution...imho!
You will be the person to pull Borano to its absolute limits. I would love to see ehat uou do with it, rental Borano obviously.

I agree with you. Both Sony and RED are appealing to customers in their own unique ways. But for me, a heavy Sony user, another reason to choose Burano is my E-Mount lenses.

Question is.. how are the burritos down under?
People are comparing the Burano to the Komodo and V-Raptor, but it's closest comparison is the Raptor XL. The Sony Burano won't just be a great run and gun camera, it'll be great for full scale productions as it has all the major connections for things like time code, XLR in, dual card slots ect... just not any extra power distro. It's really just a better film production camera than the Komodo's or even the V-Raptor. The sensor size is larger than the Komodo and just 5mm narrower than the V Raptor, but 3mm taller making it better for Anamorphic. The Raptor XL is what you'd actually want to compare it to. I own a Red, I shoot on a V-raptor every week, but the Burano is looking like the better overall camera... it's just not coming out for 6+ months.
I'm personally looking at buying a Burano, it just seems like a no compromise camera.

As a Sony fx6 and newly Komodo x owner. I would say that the burrito is amazing, and also your spending close to 30k to get this thing going.
For that price it’s a whole different ball park.
And really the internal nd of the Sony is great. I love it.
But lots of these new vnd systems are getting better everyday.
I have the entire polar pro recon set. And my lord is it cool.
Yes vnd and nd are different.
But not by some spectacular amount.
And honestly the world is loving more stylized content now a days, so it’s kinda a better all around use case.
Also I think it’s very easy to keep that kx nice and small on a gimbal. And it works great for run and gun.
My fx6 all rigged up is definitely more of a whole ordeal. A big easy to use ordeal.
And honestly the menu system of red is just so much more intuitive.

Even better, if the Burrito was $15k…. I’d buy it in a heart beat. But $25k.. some always knows how to price things to make you work for it just a little bit harder. But to fair, their cameras are usually in the forefront so a few years down the road they’re no outdated

Price is a big factor of course too. 25K before media and batts etc is a different calculus of course over the komodo, fx6 etc etc. All that being said, the Burano shows what Sony can do, really wish Sony puts more venice into their cheaper cameras and leaves the FX9 style behind.
I mean personally I already have all the extra stuff so wouldn’t be an added cost for some people. But yes agreed, granted they still have to make money haha. What do you think they should implement into the other FX cameras?
I personally just want internal raw options, which would also bring higher color fidelity.
Internal Raw is a big deal, but not always the biggest game changer for some shooters happy with XAVC codecs, but I also think there is something to be said about the ergonomics of the Burano that are a win. On body XLR, On body v-mount (Komodo-X is so nice here). @@cammackey The locking e-mount, much more durable monitor and mounting solution.
The FX6 does a lot right, it's just missing a few things that some ops might perfer ergonomically. Personally, I like to bring my own top handle to the party and want a smaller base cube and on body xlr, again more Komodo X style in a way.
Really an FX6 with on body xlr, and internal raw to CF Express B Cards and a better on board touch screen monitor would be steller. Essentialy the Burano, but not 8K, a 4K or 6K Burano design that is maybe a little lighter would be a much better FX9 than the FX9 is today.
I was always a fan of the Canon C500 design personally, and it hits a lot of the same places as the Burano in many respects. But having V-Mount built in for those longer runtimes really makes a difference. Not to mention an RF mount for more adaptability etc etc.

Sometimes choosing between high end cameras can be like choosing between homemade desserts. They’re all really good, and it’s hard to go wrong in terms of image quality (preferred camera layout and file workflow preferences aside).

Sony Burano is a great-looking camera but for £25k I think Sony cut some nasty corners on its design in three major ways, The LCD/Eyepiece design is Honestly embarrassing... like is that really the best Sony could come up with for a £25k camera I think is unbelievable, Combined it's also 4 channel camera but you STILL can't use Channels 3/4 without using Sony's proprietary hot-shoe mount of which the Sony Burano doesn't even have one (No 5 Pin XLR like the Amira or 3.5mm jack like on the FX3 handle) you need to pair it with a Sony FX9 handle to even get the hot shoe mount on the Burano in the first place, Why they didn't design a brand new dedicated Burano metal "Smart" handle with Camera control, start-stop and a smart hot-shoe mount for the Burano is beyond me.
This camera is also bigger than a Komodo and FX6 which honestly makes it even less viable as a permanent replacement as you still need that smaller FX3 for Gimbal work, Ultimately I'm still holding out for an FX3 with IBIS and Internal ND, I think that is still the one thing people want the most as there is still that Internal ND sacrifice with the FX3 and IBIS Sacrifice with the FX6, The Burano's has both but the sacrifice is Size and arguably Cost.

Be careful with the IBIS on the Burano, I've seen lots of glitches from it (unintended wobbling and fidgeting).
Why didn't you use the FX9?
So, it comes down really to the tool. But image quality of komodo X is bit better for sure. You get global shutter but i personally like to expose for mid grey instead of highlights and fx6 here gives me 1 stop over komodoX which is a deal breaker. How ever with komodo i could expose for highlight and utilize super shadow information. So a matter of preference. What really buys me into sony is autofocus as a solo operator it is a must have feature, built in ND, and ofc i had plenty of sony glass.
So burano, 16 bit linear "RAW", honestly i would pass on that, it is no where near venice. if i wanted raw i would go for VENICE OG at that price point, which is even cheaper to get. or RED Raptor which is a killer. And also, i love s35 and my cooke set of lenses so... Verdict is - Burano is not a camera i would buy or recomend with it quirks honestly at that price point. there are plenty of alternatives on the market that do kill it. When you shoot on 25k camera you are not a solo shooter anymore honestly. stupid notion to begin with. Second, 20ms sensorr readout ? WTF.

It just feels like this is too costly and the technology will be heading quickly to 16bit raw, internal ND, with autofocus in smaller form factors in the upcoming years and this will be outdated sooner than later. But hey, I Don’t Know!!! And still an amazing piece of technology by Sony.
We will see, Sony is also knowned for adding features to their lower camera as well... IDK, but its surely out of most owner ops pocket. It's doable with the consistency on high end client, otherwise it's only a rental company deal.@@JustWhatINeed83

does the Komodo x as dynamic stabilization/IBIS? and AF?
Ibis is a love hate thing. I cut it out of my video.. but when ibis can’t keep up with a shot, naturally you turn it on. Well when you turn it off, your sensor is jsut floating in there. Compared to a sensor that is locked in. On top of that, when using post stabilization, global shutters tend to clean up better. So there’s pros and cons to both types. And the Komodo does have phase detection, but tracking currently. But I guess when you connect your ur iPhone to it you can do face tracking with that phase detection

I mean this in a nice way, but all of these reviews seem to be spindled with bitterness that people who have fx6's and komodos or multiple cameras with elaborate rigs essentially have spent 25k on bodies-where now if they could refund it all they would buy the burano in an instant. I mean this objectively but its like a unspoken footnote I want people to realize. Any with a little shade I guess Kofis segment was the most obvious I have seen this sentiment so far and why I want the average viewer aware of this, because it really is skewing these reviews
I didn’t say that.. all these cameras are different tool for different jobs. The KX is still a smaller lighter package that’ll work well for smaller gimbal setups and handheld moments

I don't buy sony cameras because they don't do everything to the end all the time - exactly what you would need. They always leave something for the next model. They hide things from you all the time. You think that in the next model they will definitely fix everything, but it won't be like that. In the next model, you will miss something else so that you buy their next model as well.
I don't like Arri for selling you the same thing twice. Through licenses.
I like RED because they give you everything they have. They're not stealing your money. You get everything they came up with.
I mean I agree and disagree. These are businesses. We are consumers. And some of us are even pros haha. So we’re all trying to make money. I think all of these brands are still progressing the technology. It seems the biggest issue is heat. How do push these sensors and processors without melting the sensor and the image quality.. you put big ol fans in it. I think the day they create a new material that’s heat proof that can be used in all of this, will be the day that camera tech has the next big revolution.
