The 10 Rarest Lancia Delta Integrale Ever Made

  • Thirty years have passed since #Lancia left the World Rally Championship, but the Italian marque still is the winningest automaker in WRC history, with ten championship titles gained between 1974 and 1992.
    The last six of them came in sequence, courtesy of the legendary Delta Integrale, another record standing to this day.
    All the 44.296 road-going #Delta HF 4WD and HF #Integrale produced are indeed exceptional cars, but some variants are even more special due to their extremely limited production.
    Here are the ten rarest Delta Integrale variants of all time.

    Strange and wonderful cars from a strange time. The parent car, the fwd Delta, initially came across as a slightly more snobbish and self-conscious Ritmo. Then it started to get faster and a blown version arrived.
    But the end of Group B and the arrival of the Integrale changed everything.
    Che macchina!
    I still remember the first (road) one I saw and heard.
    These days, a nice Integrale in the UK is already a rare thing. These super-rare models you describe are simply never seen. Some are exquisite.
    In the UK the Integrale was never really embraced and adopted by the hooligan brigade who like to rev and pop their Impreza while stationary at red lights in busy cities, just to prove they are still alive.
    It is not a surprise to me that these folk were never drawn to Lancia. Another reason to love these cars... Not that another reason is needed.
    Excellent video.

      The rust scandal of the 70s, blown out of proportion by the local press, pretty much destroyed Lancia in the UK. The brand simply never recovered, so I'm not surprised the Delta sold poorly there in period. But the UK is full of knowledgeable enthusiasts and specialists who know how great Lancia was and keep the flame alive.

    Me and the wife used to have a Lancia Delta 1.8 (not the Integrale). When she moved to Sweden in the early 2000s (with the car) there were almost no Deltas here as the model had never been sold in this country. A year later the car got stolen and when I called the cops to report it I said it's a "Lancia Delta" and the cop on the phone went "OMG! An Integrale??" I went "No, just a 1.8" and he said "Oh..." sounding disappointed. I got the distinct impression he would have set all available resources to recover the car if it had been an Integrale. True story.

    These cars here in the US are a bit like seeing an angel given how rare they are over here. Never officially imported prior to our 25 year law's implication there were a few grey market cars that made their way across the pond with drive lines and steering wheels removed to be re-installed after entry. In the wealthy suburbs north of the city of Boston I saw one as a kid and still remember it as I had no idea what sort of car it was or why it had an exhaust that sounded like a sport bike. Since I was from the lower class region to the west I had no idea that people did such a thing until later on and consider that little memory to be one of my little gems. If for any reason I also saw a massive 1986 Oldsmobile 98 driving down a street in Vienna when visiting family at the same time and still can't figure out why someone would prefer that over the other.

      I guess it's human nature. We want what we can't get.
      Here in Europe we all secretly like American cars, even if many enthusiasts won't admit it! The bigger and brasher, the better. Because it's something we can't have in our world of tiny streets and expensive gas.

It was just rather odd as my mom had the station wagon, Pontiac version of that same car and could barely park it in certain places back here. In Austria, however, it has to be as you say, something brash in driving such a thing. Though, I did get the year wrong for it as it was the truly gigantic 1984 98 Regency Brougham (the '86 was about the size of a same year Audi 5000). Fender skirts and very much,,,,,you know, given the wide boulevards that Wien has it may have made more sense than I thought. lol

      The Verde York was produced in over 400 copies, so I haven't included it. But it's true not all Verde York had the same specification, as a few were made in the later Evo 2 spec. I have decided not to include "La Viola," to have just one "number one". But it deserved a place.

    Great video as always, just love Lancia's. I feel the best of the Italian engineers spirit exists in Lancia cars because they refused to just make cars ina a conventional way, never content with just making a car how everyone else did, they always looked to make their own mark on whatever style of car they did not through raw styling or marketing, but by innovative engineering. Top Gear often say all petrolheads need to own at least on Alfa, but they're wrong, all petrolheads need to own a Lancia.

    • @Matteo_Licata

      Very true! Lancia has always done things its own way... Which sadly also meant it went near bankruptcy twice in the space of 15 years! Even after the Fiat takeover, a lot of creativity and exquisite engineering was done, from the sweet-handling Beta to the sophisticated Gamma... Then of course all the racing cars we know and love. A truly underappreciated brand, that's for sure.

The hot hatch thing really only started in the mid-90s. Most of the Golfs (Rabbits) and Peugeots were out of the reach of the boy racers. They were still driving crappy Ford 1600 XR3i and Capris. The Integrale was a special car since it was a 5 door car (hatchback). The real cost was the 3k mile oil changes using Mobil 1 synthetic oil which was an arm and a leg in those days. • @wickiezulu
    @wickiezulu 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Unfortunate Lancia never recovered from the bad reputation it gained in the UK due to the Beta, leading to the Delta being largely LHD (outside of a few RHD conversions). Would have loved to have seen a 250-260 hp Hyena / Club Italia spec Delta Integrale along with a Prisma saloon (and possibly even a Ghibli-like 2-door coupe) version though not really a fan of the Hyena. The addition of Alfa Romeo into Fiat really screwed up Lancia, as one would have expected the Nuova Delta to further capitalize on the success of the Delta Integrale by producing a direct successor instead of the more sedate FWD 190 hp Delta HF.

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes indeed. Fiat Auto largely gave up on the UK after that, and thus never bothered to even offer a RHD Integrale... Which was technically possible but tricky, given the very tightly packed engine bay. Yes indeed, the purchase of Alfa Romeo has been the beginning of the end for the Lancia brand, as management diverted resources towards Alfa, which was believed to have more export appeal.

    • @wickiezulu
      @wickiezulu 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed, a RHD Integrale would have gone down very well in the UK. The same goes with the LHD Peugeot 309 GTi16 and original Renault Twingo.
      Another car that deserved better IMHO would have to be the Lancia Montecarlo had it been further developed/update to receive 2-litre Twin-Cam Turbo, AWD and a rebody carrying over elements of the Lancia 037 Stradale. The latter as seen on a number of Montecarlo based 037 Stradale kits (the body colored bumpers being an improvement on the Montecarlo IMHO).

    All nice, but i personally prefer the Evo1 (not only limited) than the Evo 2. Indeed only the Evo1 have been actually produced by Lancia and not by Maggiora. The evo 2 never raced and looks to me more for marketing purposes. Anyway, if we talk about limited and numbered editions, i prefer the evo1 Martini 5 and/or Martini 6, but also the green york is awesome. About the officially supposed limited 220 giallo ginestra.. well, it's widely known that the real number was much higher but has never been offcialy confirmed. Indeed there have been more orders than expected and it was very well sold also abroad. Further numbers of giallo ginestra have been also sold for Japan. Btw. also 8v and 16v are awesome also because they actually won more. It's curious because i pesonally find the "bianco perla" quiet ugly near the other ones..

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your comment. I based this video on two different books about the Integrale, and even those quote different numbers. So, whenever possible, I stuck with the factory claims, as I couldn't verify any other figures.
      Regarding the color schemes... It's a matter of taste. I love the Martini livery on race cars, but I've never liked stickers on cars, so I tend to prefer the more subdued look of other versions. Very true that the Evo won less than earlier cars, but there's no denying the Evo was the peak of the model's evolution, so it's understandable that people desire it more. Luckily, the Evo's rise in value has brought up with it the 8v and 16v as well, so these cars will be preserved with more care in the future.

Your country comes across to me as the playing field of a very small elite which lives in a totally private universe and everything has to be bent to fit into their view of themselves. Not that it is much different elsewhere mind you. That member of the Dutch royal family probably was Prins Bernhard. Talking about untouchable scoundrels. Somehow excesses however seem to be enlarged in Italy. Contrast between extremes are stronger, plainer in view and almost everybody seems to accept them. The best and worst in close proximity. Must be the light! Or maybe it is just that you are less hypocritical! :-)
