Charles Daly 601 DPS: Return from Chiappa Service and Still a Failure - Rant on Bad Customer Service

  • After 14 weeks since receipt, Chiappa finally returned the Charles Daly 601 DPS to me "Repaired". The service department at Chiappa equipped the shotgun with a new barrel and bolt, while deciding it was OK to simply grind off the bur on the bolt carrier instead of replacing it. This "fix" reduces the surface area the new piston has to impinge upon as well as ignores the fact that there may be a heat treatment issue with the bolt carrier. In addition to this, smaller details that do matter such as a loose front sight assembly and a severed O-ring for the firing pin retaining pin were left unchecked or deemed OK to ship as-is.
    All communication with Chiappa was done via email (they don't answer their phone line) and updates had to be reached out for from my end bi-weekly. My multiple requests to have a phone call to discuss this were completely ignored. When I reached back out, justifiably upset, I was passed along to the "Operations Manager". This gentleman proceeded to tell me I was unreasonable, that if I wanted a refund I would have to get it from the gunstore I bought it from, and would not send me the parts to replace the bolt carrier citing that I am "not a gunsmith". This jack-wagon did everything he could to make sure that I would not be receiving a remedy by my requests, only that if I sent it back into Chiappa (for an unknown amount of time) he would "personally take care of it". All BS, all excuses for poor performance, and no actual desire to take care of a problem or stand behind the product.
    I am extremely unhappy with Chiappa's "service" and lack of care regarding returning a firearm in a condition that will offer the owner confidence it will reliably function and not repeat prior damage. I have no such confidence and find Chiappa's performance pathetic.
    I do not enjoy these kinds of reviews, but if it saves someone else the time, money, and headache of having to deal with such a joke of a product and business, it was worth it.
    Thanks for watching.

    Don't worry,this rant was totally appreciated. It's necessary. I'm tired of being screwed over by manufacturers with crummy quality control,too. I just ordered an SDS bullpup. I hope I don't have any major issues like this. I'm a retired machinist and have always popped apart any gun before I first shoot it. I'm going to be especially aware to notice any fit or engagement issues. Thanks for the red flag!

      They will not be making this right for me. They will not refund me for the product (told me to get that from the dealer) and offered to have me send it back for another service. All the Operations Manger for Chiappa wanted to do was make excuses and tell me he would take care of the service himself. I called BS and told him not to pour water down my leg and tell me it's raining. They also have refused to simply send me a new Bolt Carrier so the gun will function without risk of further damage.
      I'll get around to a final video at some point regarding their pathetic nature. I would not feel bad to see Chiappa and its assets crash and burn. They add no value to the firearms industry with "service" like that.

    I have less than 25 rounds through my 601dps and I pulled it apart for inspection after seeing your videos. My pistons look fine, but you can clearly see where the bolt carrier is deforming from the piston on the same side as yours. My rail and sights came aluminum though.

    • @AmericanArmsChannel
      @AmericanArmsChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm sorry to hear that your example is suffering bolt carrier damage. some deformation may occur and stop as the spot work hardens over round count (the Benelli does not do this), but it may also peen away like mine did. It sounds like you have a proper hardness on the piston and a soft bolt carrier rail.
      You can send it in for "warranty" or you can try to address it DIY. Sometimes SJ Hardware in Canada has the bolt carriers available for sale, but I have not been able to source one myself. I have tried a hard weld on mine after notching the carrier rail to remove the damage from the piston and cannot get a hard enough weld to take that will resist the impact of the piston for more than a few rounds. A proper bolt carrier is really the only for sure fix.

      They are aluminum sights....some people just can't tell between metal and plastic. Are you running birdshot, or full power rounds per the Benelli break in recomendations? How do you suppose the two pistons self regulate with lighter loads? One side will hit harder. What a shock I've only run full power buckshot through mine and it's perfect. These guns aren't for birdsdhot shooting goobers, they are military weapons.

Any firearm is subject to things not going 100% right, and many times it's can be hissy fit prone amatuers like this guy causing it. Now add in that he's throwing a little tantrum with customer service and you can do the math as to what the outcome will be.

      They did notice it, and they decided the appropriate action was to grind the bur off and leave a compromised bolt carrier in the gun. There Operations Manager eventually was the one communicating with me and would not call me, only email. Bottom line, they would not refund me and wanted to make excuses for why their service was pathetic, but wanted me to trust the to have the OM "take care of the issue himself" if I'd send the gun back to them for the second time. BS.
      I called him on every point and told him to send me a new bolt carrier since at this point that is the only part that needs to be replaced. His response was to essentially tell me that I'm not a gunsmith so I can't do it. They are pathetic and incompetent. Chiappa as a company is not worth spending money on. Sad, because they do seem to have a few good higher end products, but if something goes wrong this seems to be the level of service they want to over their not-so-valued customers. • @AmericanArmsChannel
      @AmericanArmsChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am glad you have a good example.
      There very well may be more than one factory that these firearms are assembled in; Turkish manufacturing of arms outside of the state owned/controlled arms makers and ISO certified facilities is very shady and many rely on small parts made in cottage industry shops to assemble a final product, hence much of the QA/QC inconsistencies. I have seen the most recent examples of the 601 DPS offered in Sportsmans Warehouse, and have noted many differences from the first batches that came into the country. In fact, they now are much more closely matched to what the Canadian market had been seeing for several years. This may be an improvement, but I still would not spend my dollars on the chance.

    Not defending this gun in any way whatsoever but I’m just wondering if you could interchange that bolt carrier with a benelli bolt carrier and still have an operable firearm… that being said your just dumping money into it at that point

    • @AmericanArmsChannel
      @AmericanArmsChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, you could drop a Benelli M4 bolt carrier in place of the factory one if so desired. However, I will not be spending more than half the value of the gun on just that part to 'fix' it. Unfortunately there is no real access in the US to Turkish made spare parts for the M4 clones. If there was, this would be a quick parts replacement. However, as there are not any carriers available, I am working on removing the afflicted area and providing a Tig or Mig weld to replace the removed/damaged material. Providing a weld that will withstand the significant forces that piston rod delivers when it impinges on such a small surface area is not small feat, but my concept is sound as I have proved it will work with a simple wire welder. It took 6 shells for the weld to deform enough to stop the gun from working, so it simply needs a stronger material.
      I have dropped the AKSA S4 Carrier into the shotgun with the original 601 DPS bolt and internal parts to test fit and it was functional. The lock-up on the 601 DPS is a little tight and drags on the bolt lugs, however. I suspect that the barrel extension's locking recess dimensions are out of spec and causing poor timing of the cam groove on the bolt carrier, or visa versa. Either way, it is functional and a brief polishing did alleviate some of the "sticky-ness". It will take a measurable round count to determine whether this issue will alleviate as the bolt and extension wear in, or if it will cause a material failure.
      The AKSA S4 barrel and trigger pack also readily dropped into the 601 DPS and passed dry-fire function checks. It seems both clones are close enough to the real thing that they can swap parts between themselves or have Benelli OEM parts dropped in with little to no fitting. However, at a certain point you will be chasing a white rabbit in spending as much on the clone to get it where it needs to be when compared to just saving up and purchasing the Benelli M4.
      It's an interesting game for sure, but for those that do not like projects, I would not recommend any of the Turkish M4 clones at this time.

    At $250 semi auto of shotgun or rifle not going be reliable.
    $250 I'd only look at pump SG in mav 88, stoeger p3000, savage arms
    A reliable semi start at $600 in mossberg 500, stoeger m3000

    The problem is that you tinker with the gun to much. Just keep it cleaned and lubricated.

      @AmericanArmsChannel  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh, silly me. Why didn’t I think of that. It totally wouldn’t have smashed/deformed its internal components to the point of being inoperable if I had just kept it cleaned and lubricated right out of the box. That totally would have saved me all the trouble of dealing with Chiappa’s terrible customer service/warranty department.

    I don’t get it. If you wanted an actual semi auto defensive shotgun, why did you buy this ? Why not just get a 930 if you wanted something in the price range 6-700 that worked ? Because you wanted to look like you bought a benelli. I’ll take the guaranteed product over the 1400 savings any day. Or I’ll buy what’s proven in my price range. Just like any other high end item you get what you pay for usually. This time the gamble didn’t pay off.

    • @AmericanArmsChannel
      @AmericanArmsChannel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The shotgun was not purchased with the intent of having it be a substitute for the actual/“real-deal” Benelli it imitates. It was purchased for fun and to learn the design and decide if I wanted to buy the actual Benelli.
      The point I am intending to make in this video and the original was not only sharing the poor experience with Chiappa customer service, but that the shotgun is labeled as a defensive shotgun and is being done so in a deceiving and “snake-oil” way.
      I agree that if one is looking to have an M4/M1014 they should buy the real thing. If one can only afford to spend $500-650 on a defensive shotguns, there are a plethora of quality used and new pumps available with good pedigrees.

      @@AmericanArmsChannel I’d have to believe you know this but there is no substitute for a genuine piece of machinery. I cant be mad at Hyundai if I bought a G90, and blew it up trying to catch a s63 Mercedes. I understand the lure of a nicely built machine that’s on par with more expensive options. I’m sure most would appreciate you taking the financial hit instead of them experimenting. One thing I’ve learned in life for sure is when I try to do things cheaply it costs me more money. You’re almost half the way to the cost of the m4 m1014 that I’ve seen used at 14-1500. Thanks for the review I just wouldn’t expect much from a cheap clone myself. I replica that’s put on all the clothes to appear to be genuine when one trigger pull tells the tale.

    If possible, I like to see a review on the SDS Imports AR- T02 semi-automatic 12ga. Be looking about but no joy. Anyway, thank you and yes, I am subscribed to your channel. 👍🦹‍♂️

    • @AmericanArmsChannel
      @AmericanArmsChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the kind words and the subscription. I appreciate it!
      The AR-T02 is nearly identical to all of the lower end Turkish origin sporting shotguns that also have been given tactical makeover models with shorter barrels. The bolt and gas system designs are reminiscent of a simplified and streamlined Beretta A390/391/300. They will work, but I would be hesitant to expect very good performance and longevity for a price point under $300. You get what you pay for and typically I do not jump in on guns at those price-points as they do not last. I run my equipment hard and have fairly high standards, so many times long guns at that price point do not enter the equation. There are some great values out there, but if you are considering a shotgun for any kind of serious hunting or defensive use, Spending just $150 to $200 more will place you in a different category, even with effectively the same design from a Turkish manufacturer simply due to better materials and quality control.
      I have seen a number of the lower priced guns of this design crash on the range and while hunting. When I say "crash" I mean suffered catastrophic failures that required parts replacement and fitting to bring the gun back into operation. At the same time, I have seen a higher end version of this pattern of gun work like clockwork until too dirty to chamber fresh cartridges.
      Those are just my thoughts though, so take them with a grain of salt. Thanks again for the viewership and sub.
