Bruce and Walker are superb; Can't speak their for double-handers but I've had a 'Merlin Stream King' in the UK for decades; bought it in preference to the equivalent Hardy; it's caught me everything from trout and char to salmon; left it against the fence one day and the cattle got tangled in the line and broke the top section; rang them; explained; got a new top at a nominal price and it's still my favourite all these years later.
I’m relatively new to the two handed world and to me it seems like the line pairing st least in my case has made the difference in the rods ability to perform.I have a Sage one 7wt 11’6”switch with and Airflo Skagit setup and cast great but can’t find a Scandi head that works for me . I also have a Echo 11’6” trout Spey with the Airflo Skagit and it cast great with that setup looking to put a Scandi on it and it just happens I’m about 15 minutes from the Red Shed so thanks for the heads up on Poppy . Yesterday fished the Clearwater with a guide and used a rod he provided a Loop Opti NXT 14’8wt with a scandi , really liked it .your videos I find very informative keep um coming. Thanks for the video
@@LineSpeedJediTimRawlins we went back to the Clearwater last week I had purchased a Maxcatch 8 wt Skytouch 13’6” with the Classic reel . Went by and saw Dale at the Red Shed and poppy was hanging out Dale hooked me up with the Galeforce .035 equalizer running line ( very nice ) and put on an Airflow 570G Rage compact . This combination is great, your right it’s a gun but easy to cast with this setup . If you neat Peck ID and you swing you have to stop and see these guys .
Good video! I bought a used Sage One 5116 switch from my son once that he had trouble casting, I wanted it bad and thought I could make it work. I was wrong. I tried every possible line configuration trying to find the sweet spot for that rod and just simply could not cast it, it just never felt right no matter what I did. I always said it felt like swinging a fence post. I was eventually able to dump it on someone else thankfully and moved on. I have an 8126 One and a 9140 TCX which I have no problems with but I never bought another Sage rod after that experience, the action is just not for me. I almost exclusively buy demo rods now that are fully warrantied from a favorite fly shop. Mostly they are lightly used, sometimes still have the plastic wrap on the cork, but generally used lightly on demo days or spey claves etc. The brand works for me so I don't even have to try them, I know I will be able to cast them without fail, but in the case I would have trouble I know the shop will help me out. I now have close to 10 rods of that brand!
It's worth checking out end of season sales on quality rods. Fly/spey tackle is very fashion driven and because so many want 'this year's model', 'last year's' rods can be had at very reasonable prices. Nothing wrong with them at all - a lot of claimed 'improvements' are mainly marketing speak anyway. I've picked up a nice Hardy Jet Switch 6/7 and a Snowbee Geo 13ft 8/9 for less than half price during the last couple of years. Excellent rods, with nice components and of course you get the full warranty of a name brand.
@@LineSpeedJediTimRawlins I bought a 12 ft Loop i got it half price brand new with full warranty from The Bears Den in Taunton Mass. The owner and staff are awesome and will help people with their set up. I got the Rio Versailles 8wt. Scandi and it comes with 4 different sink tips it's a great line and great price!
I did take your advice and I went down to see Gary Anderson yesterday. He let me try several rods and lines and I settled with the 1103-4 Nova 2 Trout Spey rod because it was the best rod I've ever casted. I also learned a lot about my casting stroke. For some reason I preferred the 275 grain Rio Skagit Max Short. It has a 20 foot long head which might be too long and too heavy for an 11' 3wt? Maybe it's because it helps keep me from blowing my anchor. Can still only manage 40-50 foot casts with a 3" lead eyed rabbit fly but I'm pretty sure that's just because I'm not very good at casting yet.
A repeat appeal to all of the Jedi's many fans... Just a heads up...I am trying to solicit funds for the Jedi to purchase a remote microphone to aid in his video lessons that we all benefit from. I am going to seed it with $50 and would welcome any and all to step up and help in this matter, be it financial or advisory. I have found Tim's lessons to be top-notch and always delivered in a warm, friendly tone that encourages even the most inept casters, like myself. Let's help him, help us, with a remote microphone setup so we can hear his lessons, and his lighthearted candid self abasements, when the wind blows or he turns his back to the camera. The quality lessons and friendship he freely gives is surely worthy of our coin. I plan on asking Tim to pin this one on top. If you find it crass or otherwise objectionable, blame me.
I found the best way to get a good fit with your spey rod is to visit a witch and follow her advice. Why for 10 strands of my hair, six AAA batteries, and two toe nail clippings from my left foot that I cut on a moonless night in May, I found the bestest spey rod ever. I've yet to buy it though, since she wants $395 plus my body when I pass on. She looked like the kind to do nasty things to it so I declined. Oh, and no warranty - bummer. ; )
I gotta say, sage warranty is nothing special. Especially if you're in Canada. They actually charge more to fix it if you're from Canada. By the time it's all said and done it's around $300 CAD to get a rod fixed. Love the service so far from Pieroway. Break it and you'll get a new one in the mail.

That’s great to hear Mike. Poppy may have some Scandi lines you can try before you buy. You are starting out the right way! Glad to have helped!
