      I think every people would be happy to hear a foreigner trying to speak their language, It shows genuine interest and openness towards the local people so most of the times you will get a big smile in return.
      ..Plus, hearing someone stumble their words and pronounce Greek with a funny accent is always hilarious :P

      I'm Greek and i disagree. We only end up being proud of all this stuff and not making much of new progress. USA on the other hand is in some way the Athens of today. They lead the world in the most important stuff and in 2000 years from now they will be mentioned as a great civilization of the past. Also, don't forget that USA saved the world from fascism and communism

    • @alanpotter8680
      @alanpotter8680 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@antikokalis I highly doubt USA can remain on top for that many years. Look at Japan. It went up and down few times in just 50-60 years. USA is still fighting its own identity crisis and its rapid development created that inflated ego that one day will pop hard. America's economy today is like Michael Jackson's fame and fortune during the last 15 years of his life - all supported by massive loans from banks, loans secured by intellectual property, land and collectors art that was later sold to cover those loans. The only reason USA became the leading country in innovations these past few decades, is only because it opened its doors to the smartest people from all around the world.
      On the note about fascism and communism...After the "liberation" by both the US and Russian troops during WWII, what happened is, a new Europe cut in two - one with a new American usurper and one with a Russian one. Even to this day USA demands control over Europe. The Americans were and still are particularly interested in the Balkans, as this is the most strategic point in all Europe.

    I think the reasons for siesta is these : We in Greece eat our main course right after we finish work (about 3-4 pm) and then we feel sleepy . It's pretty logical to feel sleepy since you are tired from work and then you eat a lot , often combined with some beer or wine. You then want to sleep. Furthermore the other reason is the hot weather. Especially during Spring, Summer and early Autumn. Anyway siesta is actually good for your health, as long as you don't overdo it. 40-60 minutes is perfect, and then you are brand as new for the rest of the day. I think also other countries with hot temperatures have the same habit. From Wikipedia : "Factors explaining the geographical distribution of the modern siesta are high temperatures and heavy intake of food at the midday meal. Combined, these two factors contribute to the feeling of post-lunch drowsiness. In many countries that practice the siesta, the heat can be unbearable in the early afternoon, making a midday break at home welcome.

  • @RumpledRegina

    To be precise about the palm counting: It's not the counting that's offensive, it's the open palm when you have reached 5. That's called a "mountza" and it's an offensive gesture, think of a slightly lighter version of the middle finger (we do use the middle finger as well).

  • @gadabout7000
    @gadabout7000 6 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    They park on the sidewalks mostly because the roads were built before cars were really introduced for the most part so when they built the cities/towns it would mostly be designed for foot traffic and the occasional donkey/horse pulled cart so just wide enough for one cart to come through and maybe some spare space for say a table for selling miscellaneous goods. This is common throughout Europe in general and even on Paris, you will find that motorist will park in a long line on sidewalks even with the French government trying hard to prevent that by putting up the metal chain fences along the walkways. Think of a sidewalk more as simply an area that is not the road rather than pedestrian walking space. Frankly, you can, and most people do, walk in the street if no automobiles are coming, just be prepared to move to the side quickly when one does come. Also, you won't really find "runners" in Europe generally. People don't really exercise outside there and locals will probably think your kind of weird. My friend went for a run while she was living in France and someone actually stopped her to as if she was being chased and if she was ok lol. Europeans just walk a lot and that's how they exercised. It is a lot easier to walk everywhere there compared to the US because things are closer together and more compactly built. The land size of the US is giant so everything here is built out horizontally because we don't have as much of a need to build up and everything is spread far apart so we have to drive to get almost anywhere unless you live in a large major city. Athens is just as slow, it's just a cultural thing (okay maybe not quite as slow, but still a lot slower). The northeast US is considered super obsessed with time and being on time and everything like that, the farther south and west you go the more relaxed it will be. Central/South America (think Brazil?) is similar to Greece in this aspect while far-east Asia (think S.Korea/Japan) is much more like Northeastern US. Ha so yeah they don't call a nap a siesta, its called υπνάκο (pronounced ypNAko) and most likely developed out of the fact that around 2-4 pm is the hottest part of the day and Greece is really hot so working during that time would be least productive and hardest so instead they rest and relax and continue their work later once it is cooler and now it has developed to be cultural as not everyone works outside in the heat and the sun and some people work in air-conditioned offices. Also, it could be related to fishing and how fishermen have to get up early to catch fish (best time is at dawn) and stay out throughout the morning or sell at the market once it opens and are tired so they need a nap in order to do other things later throughout the day and still be able to wake up the next day at dawn to go out. An open palm facing out and gestured out toward another person (with or without saying "na") is super offensive (equivalent of the middle finger/flipin' the bird). So same connotation but with the added meaning of shoving shit ("skata") in someone's face. Using two hands (smacking the second one palm out onto the back of the first) for added emphasis. This is probably why your teacher told you to be careful. Most people will know that you aren't being rude and won't get offended especially because they will know that you are a foreigner and don't know plus its really obvious and clear when someone is actually gesturing. Greeks have a tendency to point and press buttons with their middle fingers so although they understand the meaning of the middle finger generally if you are actually trying to flip them off, they may think that you are super serious about something in the sky lol. Sorry for the actually essay lol.

    At 6:55 I think you are talking about the ''mountza''. It's done when you extend all your fingers of your hand and pointing your palm to the person you want to insult. It's like the Greek middle finger. So, if you want to show the number 5 to someone and avoid any misunderstandings you just do it with your palm pointing towards you. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mountza

    • @brookebossier5114
      @brookebossier5114  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah our Greek teacher actually just explain that to us and thats why they count with palm facing out

    • @bouyiaka
      @bouyiaka 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@brookebossier5114 Even if you count with the palm towards the other person people will not get offended, mountza counts when with the palm open you move your arm to the other person, like guiding the palm to them. Although someone could be touchy and think you "moutza" him, but it is not so likely.

What is more, we are not loud we are just kind of too outgoing and happy - positive , so we have the tendance to kind of speak a little bit louder I suppose. Ohh and last but not least, we are not just shutting everything down and going to rest, actually we are kind of really active and we are always on the road doing crazy things and laughing or working and stuff

    In order to tell differences between Greeks and Americans you basically have to live in small villages, towns and major towns in each of these countries for at least 1 year and then sb can tell differencies. My big fat greek wedding has nothing to do with Greeks from Greece. With all respect their grandparents moving to Australia some 50 years ago, they were raised with an ethnic background but raised and went to school in Australia so the culture is completely australian. Same goes with the Greek americans. Culturally they are total americans , it would take them years to adjust again living in Greece, Europe since it is so different than those 2 continents.(Oceania and America). However, totally respect the fact that you actually try to learn greek language , although it is not required by any means!

    The difference is that even the name America has its origin in Homer, pronounced OMIROS in Greek, the Romans called it OMERICUS, and later the name AMERIGO, Vespucci Amerigo was ultimately the name giver. If someone asks what the difference is between Greece and all other countries, it is that Greece is Greece and has its uniqueness, as much as the fanatical Romans have destroyed everything with their Christianity.

    Knowing Greek people when you filmed they probably where like what the hell is she doing plus the cars being parked on the pavement is super annoying, also heads up at 2:55 the guy said they don't know the language and that lady laughed, any ways just want to say Greeks don't really care much about what's happening around the world they just focus on there things. And I just want to say this vlogs are really interesting to see from a Americans point of view continue your video they are amazing!!! Πολλά Φιλιά από την Κύπρο 🙌🙌🙌🙌

      Haha the cars on the sidewalk can get super annoying. Yeah we figured out that Greeks are really big on family and dont pay much attention to whats going on around the world. Thanks for the comment! I'll try to do a Greek locals video in the furture about more that I pick up on

    well, no one parks correctly, then new driver are easily influenced and do it because everybody does. I really hate that. It is slowed down over there, it's closer to a village-like place, people there tend to not do much daily

    One thing that impresses me with the Greeks, is that they don’t know how to pretend, hide their thoughts, their feelings. If they move you they will die for you. If they don’t like you, you’ll know. And last but not least, a Greek doesn’t laugh like normal people. They laugh from the depths of their chest. Great people.

I love people, culture, music free space and oxyge and i am not talk so fast. We (part of me swedish) talk very slow. But remember that.
