My gaming friend is lukewarm unfortunately, but I love Troyes. I interpret the theme as squabbling nobles engaged in petty one-upmanship. Glorious.

More than two players can put workers on the same card. The rules state that if there are no available place you put the worker on the illustration. You just don’t get points at the end of the Game (hard to find rule, explained in the example)

Ah, good catch. I wonder if that would change our experience, not sure.

@@3MBG May be, if you tend to block good actions. In this game the actions are available for everyone. I play mostly 2 players so that rule doesn’t change anything. Totally different in a 4 player game.

So, why no gold medal for this well loved and respected game. And i think if i had played it back in 2010 when it came out, i'd love it a lot more. I like it and respect it, but it didn't wow me like some other games. If i bothered with a silver medal i've give it one, but it just felt a little dated. I think a few things, like the iconography and card layout could do with a bit of an overhaul to make teaching the game easier for example. Still, very good game and one i'm keeping in the collection.

I played it for the first time recently and really enjoyed it. A lot more then many euros of a similar style, like Lorenzo or Grand Austria Hotel. Is the artwork dated? Yeah. Could the iconography be better? Yeah. Is it lacking much of a theme? Sure. But it’s got a lot of unique things going on that I don’t think I’ve seen in other games, and it really baked my noodle. Really tempted to pick it up for myself, but not sure it would make it to the table very often.

@@ratguy69 for some reason I like these “dated” artwork styles so long as they are well done.
The style of illustration seems to be intentional and I think it works with the theme, like it was lifted from some medieval text.

One of the best euros. It is my favorite euro. Still like it more than all the new games I have played coming out every other week.

Thanks for this. I already bought Circadian First Light based on your review (funnily enough from your current sponsor, since they were my local board game store at the time). It did not disappoint at all. I get from your review that Troyes is a game that would earn my respect based on what it pioneered, but wouldn’t earn enough enjoyment to regularly, and spontaneously, make it to the table.

    • @john-qz3fu

No dude, troyes is an amazing game. Off all the hundreds of euros I've played this is my favorite. Check it out. It's great. Who knows you might even like it more than circadian first light, you might like it a whole lot more.

I adore this game, though it can be very hard to teach. I don't know if it's just the graphic design, but it really burns people's brains when you try to explain it to them. This video will help!

I think the more reviews I watch the more I think Euros aren’t my cup o’ tea! I appreciate The content as always if nothing else to keep my own list of: “yeah I’ll play that if it comes out” or “nah, what else is on the shelf.”
As always great content! Thanks for sharing!

That was me for most of the 2000's and into the 2010's for a bit. One of the reasons i didn't play troyes when it came out

I agree, I have only Orleans with the solo/co-op expansion and thats it no more euros in my collection...
If you consider the following games as euros as well so maybe I have more but I don't think they are euroes :
I also own feudalia, micro city, space shipped, under falling skies and palm island.
Feudalia is a worker placement with deck building the best one there is before the other shit we have today,
Micro city is about building a famous building, space shipped is about getting two gems before the enemy, under falling skies is just space invidsd with dice placement, and palm island is about getting vp but I only play with getting the achievements done
I just hateeeee vp based games in general and euro games are mostly and only about it so for me most of the euros are huge pass...
Why they love the vp ending condition so much? It's such a lazy game design in my opinion, there is more in gaming then just counting vp like it's a grade I've school and comparing it to other players, I'm sorry after two diplomas I really don't want to go back to socres and grade.
Yeah I said it lazy design it's so easy always to go "the winner is the one with the most points in end" mehh bahhh boring!!
I guess people who just love vp will love euros, but for me always give me Not this victory condition, give me any other victory conditions other than that

For anyone that thinks this is difficult to learn, watch a few playthroughs. I felt the same way, but after watching Before You Play and Slickerdrips playthroughs it instantly "clicked".

Thanks for the review. I learned it fairly recently on BGA, and I like it. I might pick it up and get rid of Caylus (one I liked a long time ago, but did not enjoy in recent playings).

I am one of those weird people who actually likes the art in Troyes (and has pronounced it correctly all along, unsurprisingly considering that I live in France!).
It's in the cupboard at my Friday night club and before I fell ill and the world fell apart, it was on my shortlist of games to play next. Now, sadly, I don't know if I'll have the mental capacity to do so for quite a long time.
I still love Circadians: First Light though! Because I learnt to play that before I fell ill, I can carry on playing it, I think? I hope! And I love the art in Circadians. I am weird, let's face it :-)

I really like the game but it was really difficult to teach the game to my group. Many actions are not really logical imho. Still... using dice and reducing the involved luck like that is awesome. I still think it is a very great game.
