I always made everything from scratch. Tastes better and no weird ingredients. And generally, it's much cheaper. However!
Now that we're senior citizens, the kids are gone, and most grocery stores offer fresh prepared meals and meal items, I've discovered it's not really more expensive to skip the scratch, as long as we're buying healthful foods. And after almost 50 years of preparing meals, I'm over it. I still cook, but more selectively and less bound to do it.

I do a lot of sheet pan meals and stir-fry one serving at a time, and batch cook and freeze things that freeze well (soups, spaghetti sauce, etc.), but I also pick up meals 2-3 times a week.

This year I bought 2 plants from our local nursery. I said to my hubby from now on I will never start anything from seed again. I'm happy with my decision.
Also, I will no longer buy solar lights at my dollar store. After a year they are dead and I end up throwing them away. The batteries cost more to replace than just buying a new solar light. The cost of seeds, cost of fuel to till, fertilizer, etc. is a lot and that is before bringing it in the house, using electricity to can our vegetables, and then the cost of canning lids. My frugality is more about being intentional with my purchases and what I choose to splurge on is different to the next person. I agree that frugality changes as we go through different stages of our lives. I shop sales at different stores on items I use but I’m fortunate in that the stores are not far from each other. I do like to coupon at the drugstores. I save a lot of money and it enables me to donate a lot to local organizations. I found as I get older, like you our kids are grown and our finances are more secure so we don’t wash our cars anymore, we go through a drive through car wash and we get our lawn fertilized by a company. I started cutting my husband’s hair during the pandemic and still do only because of convenience and I do a pretty good job. I never belonged to a food cooperative. I see many TH-cam channels do the Azure Standard. I just think it’s too costly. Like you, we had a nice garden in our first home but can’t grow anything at our current home. A lot has to do with the soil quality not necessarily you. Hope, your hair looks fabulous and after raising and home schooling, your children, and watching your pennies all those years, you sure deserve to get it professionally done. Besides, TH-cam has been quite a successful gig for you as well. Thanks for all the enjoyable information. You and Larry have grown a wonderful channel for many to enjoy.

(This is my first recent one.) It seems no matter how many times we 'frugal' people explain ourselves, some people always equate our choices with being cheap or not having enough.
Regarding your choice with gardening, you might find it interesting to look online for the Extention Office in your state. Every state has these offices, sponsored out of certain state universities. They offer all kinds of information on gardens, lawns, plants, insects and other subjects for free. The information is fact based and specific for your area. You can usually call them a well. It's a great free resource.

In addition, chicken was $.99 a pound I didn’t just buy one. I bought all three whole chickens that you could buy for $.99 a pound. My family thought I was a bit nuts, but , I frozen some and this will last us through the month. I really appreciate everything that you share and all of the helpful tips.

I agree on the coupons. I do coupon but I don’t use all the ones that come cross my desk. I have to have more than 5 items to go out of my way for a deal at a store. I have always have a list.
I was raised with a garden so I do have one every year. It’s relaxing to me even when it’s a lot of work.
I keep my car till it hits 300,000 miles, when I trade it in, it was till in good shape. I don’t do oil changes y more, let the garage do it. I hate doing car repairs.
We did food co-op but they closed down.

OMD was a concept I felt so virtuous about when I visited my elderly parents. We would walk to a nearby restaurant for a great full meal. I learned much later as my folks grew weaker and weaker, this was not enough calories for a whole day, and, therefore, WHY they were growing weaker and weaker.

OMAD is one type of intermittent fasting. I do the 16:8 window instead and have lost weight doing it. Eat between 10a.m. - 6 p.m. If you can't go more than two hours at a time without food, some internet drs. say you are insulin resistant. If you look down and can't see your feet, you are also insulin resistant according to them. I believe them. It does save on the food bill to do
Intermittent fasting. Best time ever to lose weight when prices are this high.

Many of these you will need to do because you like doing them, such as sowing your own clothes, baking your own bread (it will be healthier), or growing your own vegetables. Often, when you add all the costs, it will not be less expensive than when you go to the store for these items. There are exceptions, such as oat milk, which is hugely overpriced where I am.

We have become low starch and low sugar but back in the day, I had oven use down to the type of scheduling science one uses to produce a holiday menu; but on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. The oven use schedule was like a day timer, appointment schedule which means the prep, mixing, and panning up for all the things was the same. It was a challenge I basically enjoyed at the time but it sure is nice to not be doing it anymore.

    Agree with this overall.
We can't really grow a garden either. Our backyard has partial/heavy shade and faces north. We do grow herbs in the front yard since the deer/rabbits tend to leave them alone.
Extreme couponing seems good for processed foods but not much else.
Agree - consolidate trips and only take a trip if you are planning to buy multiple items.
This all depends on what "falling apart" means. For a car, you definitely have to weigh the upcoming repair costs with the value and your ability to pay cash for the next car vs. interest rates, especially if you only buy used. Almost everything else, we will use until it falls apart and then it gets recycled if at all possible.
Sewing your own clothes only saves money if you are looking for something very specific and the store-bought item is massively overpriced. I do think people should be doing basic alterations though. If it's in a pile for "take it to the tailor" and that never happens, it's a waste.
By the time you pay for proper oil disposal and account for your time, you probably haven't saved money.
I think if you can minimize the things coming into the house, it will probably save money as you won't feel as much pressure to buy organizational items or move to a bigger place.
Food co-ops can be cheaper but probably only for some specialty diets like organic or vegan. Otherwise, there are better deals.
Agree on buying the best quality that you can afford.

I do have a large garden and can and freeze what I can't eat for the winter. I have even frozen cucumbers to use in smoothies. The only coupons I use come in my app from the food store for things I normally buy. We did have a neighborhood food coop. We purchased from the wholesalers who sold to the restaurants and small groceries in bulk and we got their costs. It was fruits and vegetables by the case, frozen foods, cheese and nuts for example. I cut the whole family's hair including my own for over 20 years. As for eating out and getting coffee shop coffee I do that when traveling, and I love to travel. That is where I spend my money.
The most important thing you mentioned is buying quality. I have always bought the best quality that I could afford. My house was built in 1958 and the people who had it custom built spared no expense to put in the best quality building materials. (they told me that) I purchased it in 1971 and there has never been one single issue over the 53 years. When I put in a new kitchen in 1985 I bought solid birch Amish built cabinets. A plumber just told me last month that they look brand new. My stove and refrigerator were Amana and the dishwasher Maytag. The refrigerator was 33 years and the dishwasher 35 years when replaced. I still use the stove. Unfortunately neither Maytag or Amana are same because everything is made by Whirlpool now. When I replaced the dishwasher I bought a Bosch. My hot water heaters last 20 years and the furnaces 25 years. Last year I replaced the Trane AC that was 29 years old and never needed repair. I replaced it with a top of the line highly efficient Daikin because Trane is not the quality that it once was. I drive a 7 year old Honda (purchased new) that has had 0 problems with a 20 year 200,000 mile full warranty on the drive train.
Four years ago I had my bathroom rehabbed. The tub and sink are still the original cast iron that I had refinished. ($79 for the epoxy 3 step refinishing product). For the medicine cabinet I had 2 new glass mirror doors made and the cabinet itself painted by a body shop at a total cost of $150. I cleaned up the chrome and glass light over the medicine cabinet which still looks good. I did put in new ceramic tile on floor and walls. The new toilet is Kohler and faucets are Moen.

Ugg...clothing sewing. If I only knew then what I know now in terms of what size pattern to start with and alterations to make! I made all sorts of alterations on the pattern, cut a bit on the big side, toiled everything on the body, and added all sorts of elements using the pin and pinch method for fit. In the process, while I was more of a beginner-ish I was doing things considered advanced on the fly just to get things to fit. Things did look good with a tailor made fit but often didn't come out looking like the pattern's picture. It was enough I never got back into it but, as a short person I now know to begin with a children's pattern. If I were working where I needed better office wear, I would likely let ready-to-wear price tags over ride my underlying dread however.

Single serve fruit/veggie cups (always thought they were for kids' school lunches), mashed potatoes and rotisserie chicken (she eats the dark hot and slices the white for freezing and later sandwiches). We know the chickie isn't the healthiest but to prep and roast a whole one - too much. She complains the leftover tins of things would go bad before she ate it all. Gravy packages - she's short like the wife and standing practically against the skillet stirring, a saucepan is easier w/o having to get out the flour, etc. She also got rid of big beds because a twin is fine and the sheets are easier to handle.

Making things from scratch... well, we do that- not to save money, but for health reasons. Ultra processed food is very unhealthy- packed with salt and other preservatives. We don't go out to eat for the same reason. Most restaurant food is prepared with salt. So while we don't go out and make all of our own food, it's not because of frugality. Wonderful advice as always dear Mr. & Mrs Ware. One thing I implore you to reconsider is replacing engine oil & filter yourself. Quick lube place all suffer the same problem as follow:
1, they never give enough time for the old oil to drain completely
2, as a result, your sump could be overfilled
3, replacing the oil filter yourself means you could fill it up prior to installation and that will greatly minimize oil starvation upon starting up
4, quick lube places often upsell you engine air filter or cabin air filter that you don't need
5, they most likely overtighten your drain plug & oil filter or worst not tight enough which would result in catastrophic failure
6, you will have no idea if the oil being used is exactly as specified in your owner's manual
So please for your vehicle sake, engine oil & filter change should be carried out yourself because no one else will care for your ride as much as you do yourself.
