What a great idea! We have been organizing LEGOs for years, in various ways... everything from Tupperware to Sterlite drawers that are similar to the ones you have from IKEA. My youngest is 16 now, but he does still enjoy the occasional Star Wars set or just rambling through his stash when he has extra down time. One thing we found helpful is photographing creations. Often he would make something and then feel torn - not wanting to dismantle it, but wanting to use a piece or two in another project. He was afraid he would forget how he made something and not be able to replicate it. Or, if something simply broke, it was easier to see from a photo exactly how it should be put back together than figuring it out from instructions. He enjoys looking back through the old photos now and then, and still enjoys photographing them. We have many printed in an inexpensive album, and the rest are just digital on his phone. If you were wondering, you can get all of the manuals online or in an app. Personally I like to keep mine but if you were worried about space, you can use digital versions
We have a giant red garden bucket that is the discard. Then we have lots of clear drawers of varying sizes. Tool kit holders work well. We then have family sorting times where we separate bricks, flats, plates, and people. The bricks we sort by color and everything else goes to a next bucket which can be sorted out later. It can take time but you do it little by little and if the kids like it like mine do it can be fun to sit, sort, and chat with them. There is something truly amazing about having true access to a Lego collection. Some of the best engineers in the world use Legos in college to learn. Having the ability to create anything without the frustration of the endless bucket search is really the best of Lego. I do have to admit though as a younger lad I did enjoy the treasure hunt in a mixed Lego bucket.

Ugh, we need some form of organization or else it takes us FOREVER to find the specific piece we want. But this makes me realize that we probably have too many categories. I like the idea of throwing all the "Lego guys" in one bin!
I figured out probably the absolute cheapest way to sort LEGO, have a brick bag, with every single type of brick cataloged into individual small bags, poke a hole in each one to maximize storage, so you would have “tiles” “plates” “slopes” “Inverted slopes” “Technic bricks/pins” “Technic bar/axle” “Big pieces” Then for pieces that you only have a few or one of and they don’t really fit in any category, “Rd-misc.” In total cost you would only ever need 3 boxes of small ziploc bags and you would likely have a box left for future sorting leading to much better builds and great building experience. I’ve been doing it this way and now I can effectively build multiple Mocs in a single night without trouble.
I’m going to make myself a filter funnel like something I could put over a big pop gallon bucket and pour the light goes in and all the tiny Legos will go through in the big light goes well not that way I could separate the bags from the Littles. Cause the bags are so big. And you are usually use them to build the building. Surroundings and then the Littles to build the inside of the buildings. Also whenever whenever you do decide to get rid of the books you could sell them in a big pile on eBay they bring the money or you can donate them to the school. Or you can actually send them back to LEGO and they donate into schools and stuff and Lego provides the shipping label so all you gotta do is pack it up swipe it. And ship it out
Sounds sad to think of, but if it ever does come to it that you get rid of the physical set manuals, LEGO generally provides PDF versions for sets on their site. www.lego.com/en-us/service/buildinginstructions There are even instructions available in PDF for the Dimensions builds that were in-game only.
Kim Williams We bought my son a huge dinosaur LEGO set that had no instructions, I thought it was a mistake but, it was not. I had to watch a TH-cam video to build them myself because their website did not have a PDF for this set. I contacted them and they responded that my child should use their imagination. Kind of crazy for such a hard set, my son is also autistic and loves to follow the instructions.
My boys are now teens and still use them from time to time. We separate by color in Rubbermaid clear bins of different sizes since we have more pieces of certain colors. Figures have their own bin as do accessories and one bin for miscellaneous items that don't get put away right away but makes for easy cleanup. Whenever the miscellaneous bin gets full they sorted them. We have an Ikea shelf for their displays and they each have one to two special ones displayed in the bedroom. One boy has several collectible figurines and the other has FallingWaters and a large scale Ferri car displayed in their rooms. I use beens with lids to help keep them cleaner and avoid spills. Don't ever get rid of the booklets, they discontinue them and you can't always find them online. It will also help them to sell them or trade them down the line. My boys also love to "freestyle" the best! Agree that different systems work for different people.
Oh another thing I do I set aside all the definite vehicle parts wheels axles. Steering wheels windshield. And other parts that are dedicatedly made for a vehicle
I store plain types in 2 groups- flats & block (little ones can access and build easily); then a vehicle box anything commonly used to make something that goes- split between smaller/ larger pieces, a guy box w/ ppl & accessories. A connection box w/all hinges, clips. Then 2 common & uncommon boxes, one w/small repetitive pieces- lights/posts; the other w/special pieces. Booklets are in a binder they flip through for ideas. I want store it all in one tower like here, but clear bins.

We have bins for the lose legos and a 5 tier shelf system with the finished creations....the manuals are stored in a drawer in his closet. Of course being a teenager he has all the Star Wars and Superheroes legos. I’m running out of space and thought of buying another shelf
Lol, I went through the exact same thing with my daughters lego! Started out in sets, then colour co-ordinated, tried separating by shape, then went *this is insane* and just threw it all in one big tub and she LOVES it that way. Like you, I think that is the best way to encourage their imagination and creativity. My (secret) dream though is to one day build every set and create the entire Heartlake Village haha. My daughter unfortunately does not share my dream haha. **And I use Lego as the plural - hadn't even heard "legos" until I started watching youtubers from other countries (I'm in Australia).

Im 13 and i just have tubs of larger pieces and then 2 small boxes with dividers for string, minifig parts, minifig accessories, 1X1 round parts, 1X1 straight parts and technique parts and one for random stuff
My boys are 16 and 13 and they also just mixed everything when they were little, but in the last couple of years they wanted separate colours. We now have them in containers separated by colour, with guys in their own container, and they find it much easier to create their own designs, and they don't mind dismantling their designs into the separate colours. It's funny how their wants / needs change as they get older! (and the plural is LEGO lol)

Please keep the instructions. Later in life if you still have the Lego you will be glad you kept them. Also if you decide to sell your lego at some point having the instructions makes the worth more and more desirable.

I like having my legos stored by brick so there’s a whole cabinet filled with 2x4s and another cabinet with 2x2s and a cabinet filled with lego mini figures and accessories but I think you get the idea😅

Trofast units are awful for Lego storage! I’m literally on here searching for solutions because the Trofast units we’re already using are such a disaster. We have both pine and the white and the pine is the worst but the white isn’t much better. They’re fine at first, but then the bin rims get weak or something and just start falling off the tracks. Utter fail for Lego storage.
As a kid I had a big stack of manuals and misplaced them. You can find all manuals on brick link. Just find the set # and the manual is on the sets page!
This might be the most helpful video I've seen on Lego storage! The only thing is, I've been clinging to the idea of keeping sets together to make it easier to declutter later (I can give away a complete set if it's together.) If I mix them all together, how do I declutter later? Or do I just... not?!

I tried for so long to organise LEGO, only to end up with it a mess. I even tried just one big tub - but my girls don’t play with it in one big tub either as they hate sorting through the whole tub! I think I’m going to try this - that way they have smaller sections to look through. I have a lego head container that sorts the bricks into three sizes, might do that first and have the drawers as little, middle and big.
Love your system with the Legos. This may be selfish but I thank God my kids are not into Legos. Friends have given them sets for their birthday but they never really got into them.

My solution. I put everything in one box like a trunk. Organizing Legos is not my thing. Very time consuming. Easy clean up for me is put everything in one space and be able to lounge before I go nite nite 😋
NEVER NEVER! Dump the booklets! They are huge on the resale value! Even if you don’t plan to resell, and the legos get passed to the next generation (grandkids)... they will want to make the sets. Trust me. Even if you store them out of reach in a lost box.
insideHARDWARE we inherited a massive stash of Lego. I know there is some seriously large sets in there (colours of the pieces aren’t just basic) - but we didn’t get any booklets :( wish we did.

Hi Abby, all you have said its really true...my son have also all together and he love it so...but! when he plays with lego on the floor was not really helpful for me! cause the legos were everywhere and to clean was impossible or took me hours .....so I gave him a "play table"...I guess it is for trains but it works very good...almost all the legos are on the table, he have enough place to play with them...both happy :) ....here the link to a similar table we have: deineholzeisenbahn.de/spieltisch-von-brio/ (look the pic, the website is in german cause we live in Swiss...and sorry my english :o)...big Hugs
