I’m a 2000s kid who watched Full House a lot on ABC Family and Nick At Nite. That means that I’ve never seen the show in order so thank you for the season-by-season synopsis. I remember a lot of these episodes. I remember the Disney World episodes too but Vicky was somehow erased from my memory. Also, RIP Bob Saget

I always felt like the series finale should’ve been about Danny and Vicky getting married. The show started with him being a single dad so it would’ve been nice to end it on the note he’s married again. I also just always hated the series finale being centered around Michelle, the last few seasons especially focused on her so much to the point I feel like it dragged down the other characters. I get the Olsen twins were marketable but it basically became the Michelle show at one point. A series finale about Danny and Vicky being married also would’ve been a nice way to bring the family together before it ended

It also would have been more "final." Because I watched it in syndication I never knew the finale was the finale because it seemed like "just another 2 part episode" (I recall them not being so rare that this 2 part episode had to be the finale). For the most part the episode just ends on the status quo and could be inserted anywhere in the season, Steve came back but it just seemed like a guest appearance and not "a grand reunion for one last hurrah" like other series that write out a character.

    • @OtterloopB

@@d.52555 I'm honestly of the opinion Steve was only annoying in Seasons 5-6. That's when Family Matters really sunk into "After School Special" territory.
But Season 7 came and to me at least, the show got fun again. And since everyone was a bit older, they were able to focus on more interesting storylines. Watching Steve eventually ditch the suspenders and cultivate a more sensible look, and even becoming more dexterous and (a little) less clumsy by learning Hibachi was pretty satisfying to watch develop.
I really wish the show had gotten one last season where we would've seen Laura and Steve not only tie the knot, but see more of Eddie develop his career as a police officer. There could've been a redemption arc for Myra since Season 9 pretty much turned her into a bit of an obsessive villain... but that unfortunately could never happen given Michelle's unfortunate passing.

At the time it was common for season finales to also be written as potential series finales; often the shows didn't know if they were getting picked up for another season. It wouldn't be surprising if season 6 was written the way it was because it was potentially going to be the actual end.

Michelle's amnesia episodes never felt like a series finale to me. Perhaps that's because they weren't necessarily intended to be series finale as they might not have known if they were being cancelled or not?
Anyway, like the author of this video, I think the season 6 finale felt like more of a series finale and then the episodes where the rich guy wants to buy the Tanner's house and everyone is thinking of moving out felt more like a series finale than the episodes that actually were the series finale. I hope that makes sense!

Apparently, the guy who wrote the episode was hired as a staff writer in season six and had never watched the show before. He thought the idea of Jesse dropping out made sense for his character so it became an episode. I don't think Jeff Franklin was there anymore because he moved on to Hangin' with Mr. Cooper, so no one would have remembered that Jesse already graduated.

Love this so much, I can’t believe I found another viewer with 100% the same opinions as I have. Couldn’t agree more on everything you stated. I was an 80’s kid, the same age as DJ, so I watched the series in real time from the pilot to the last episode.
For me, the downfall was Season 7, and 8 was just a crazy mess (fun, but a “bad” fun). I would call my then bf after an episode and critique it. My most-hated episode was the ostrich in Kimmy’s backyard. The retcons were very noticeable even then. The personality shifts with the kids were bad. DJ was just a boy crazy HS student (always bugged me the finale focused on a prom date, not graduation), Stephanie lost her sharp wit and humor to Michelle, and the Olsens couldn’t pull off the performance Jodie could at 8. And the twin boys were not a replacement for toddler Michelle. Vickie always seemed off, out of breath and flighty, like she was never meant to stick around. The best moment of the show’s end was Steve coming back, kind of bizarre since he was a side character. But his presence brought back the good vibes of Season 5-6.
Love the show despite my critiques, it was fun growing up with it!

I think you forget that repeating stories is not done for the audience in this case. Just because DJ and Stephanie learned about death doesn’t mean Michelle did. Your proposed ending for Full House really captures why I adore the ending of Return of the Jedi. It's that exact same perfect ending that allows the viewer to see a satisfying conclusion but it also leaves it to the viewer's imagination to envision amazing future adventures after the credits roll.
Also, I seriously respect the retcon counter as a Star Wars fan. These retcons matter when creating a believable world with believable characters. If shows and movies use cheap retcons to manufacture scenarios, it damages the choosiness of the stories and world they are trying to tell. Retcons pull viewers out of the immersion and it makes them take the world less seriously. Retcons set a precedent that anything can erased or changed and if anything can be erased or changed in the future, why bother caring about it in the present? It's a recipe for disaster when viewers realize anything they care about can just as easily be wiped away. To paraphrase the question in your video, when the audience no longer trusts anything in the show: that is when the show dies.

I've never thought about this that much but I can definitely picture a scenario where the series ends at season 6 and not be missing the last two seasons since they really were pointless in hindsight. I read somewhere that the reason season 8 ends so suddenly is because they didn't find out they got dropped until they were almost done filming the episode before. Although if 6 had been the end it still wouldn't have had true closure unless they did a montage of the wedding and Jesse and Joey getting big and maybe buying 3 houses all next to each other. Maybe I'm over thinking this.

Throwaway lines are very difficult to remember when writing a TV show. Fans tend to have way better memories because they watch episodes constantly, while the writers are usually busy with whatever episode's in front of them. It also gets more difficult to remember things when the original writers leave and new writers come in. These people could just be looking for a job and have no knowledge of the show they're writing for, which is usually the reason shows decline so much.

Full House died when it moved from the TGIF lineup backed by other extremely popular sitcoms on friday nights to tuesdays at 8 opposite the massively popular Rescue 911 which was bringing huge ratings (8-9 shares weekly) from 1991 until 1995.
Once it lost the benefit of having Perfect Strangers as a lead in and Family Matters as a followup it was in trouble, the shows they teamed it up on tuesday nights were almost always bad and didn't last, and on top of that the show was starting to show its age by then which didn't help.

Great video. Great point on when the show started to decline. The Disneyland episode probably should've been a non-finale episode and shaved off and progressed to a moment of that between Vicky and Danny. The issue of course is adding another character to an already very crowded group of one. Probably why they killed off Vicky in the following season, although many adult viewers could relate to what Danny was feeling which was great by the writers on that. Putting together a sitcom is very difficult I see. I noticed it from Season 4 of Seinfeld when Jerry and George was writing their sitcom.

Fun Facts Films, if the show’s producers hired some new writers to have fresh ideas to help the series to continue, I think those writers should’ve binge-watched seasons 1 to 6 so they knew what they had to work with. In general, I think some shows have a hard time ending. “7th Heaven” renewed after a write-in campaign brought the show back. The executives should have continued forward with their original plan to end it after season 10. Season 11 wasn’t as good as the previous season’s. God bless the writers and actors for continuing “Mork ‘n’ Mindy” after the third season, which wasn’t as good as the first two seasons. Again, this is nothing against the actors.

Personally...I agree with you...Papouli episode was definitely a powerful episode..but as you mentioned...it was not enough to redeem the not so great decisions made by the creators and writers.
The Papouli episode was definitely more relatable than most of the shows episodes. For once everything did not end with sunshine and rainbows 🌈 like most episodes did. You know?
Don't get me wrong... Full House was a great show... I totally understand that they were going for that happy family sitcom thing that was popular at the time.

I actually enjoyed season 7 and 8 a lot, although i do agree some parts were super cheesy like michelle feet and the ostrich. But a lot of my memories of watching the show were from these seasons like Papouli dying, Gia getting in a car accident, the kitchen getting filled with cement was one of the most hilarious moments to me, the hairspray gaurd infomercial, when michelle and jesse get locked in the christmas store, when DJ puts her principals car on the roof...and personally I loved Nelson. I know DJ didnt have feelings for him like she did Steve but he was so sweet to her, never hurt her like Viper did, and all around adored her. I really loved his character.

Full house never had any bad years. My only complaint was the series finale being Michelle losing her memory. It didn’t feel like a series finale because it was only really about Michelle. I’m glad fuller house had a better ending.

I never understood why they felt the need to give Jesse a new band in the last season. By that point in the show he had his radio show and was owner of the smash club so it just made sense he moved past wanting to be a rockstar. I honestly think the writers even realized this because in the finale episode Becky calls out Jesse when Joey and him are trying to create a tv pilot for already having several occupations at the same time

I personally thought the show died as soon as Becky moved in and Danny started dating Vicki. But I was one of those nerdy girls devoted to watching TGIF every week... Once the twins came I was like here we go - they're cousin olivering Michelle's Cindy Brady. (Or to put it in more modern terms as of 1993- they brought in raven Simone to be the new cute kid instead of Rudy Huxtable in the Cosby show.)

Interesting perspective! I've always thought the show had a healthy 8 season run and never jumped the shark. Maybe Season 8, but Season 7 had several great episodes: The Apartment, Fast Friends, Smash Club, The Perfect Couple, Is it True About Stephanie?, The Test, A House Divided and of course "The Last Dance" Then again, I have loved this show since I first watched it as a kid, I was only in 2nd & 3rd grades when the last 2 seasons aired and positive childhood experiences such as watching Full House in 1993 will stay with you forever! Thanks for the video :)

Something to keep in mind about certain characters and weird writing it's possible they had to leave the show. I know in the case of the actor who played Steve he went to go do the voice of Aladdin which was a huge opportunity so he couldn't be on the show

I think once she got episodes revolving around her as the main character in the later seasons you knew it was over and the show was running on fumes. I didnt care for the Michelle centric episodes at all. Remember the Rigby the Rhino one ? Yeah that sucked. Then the ending of the show is revolving all around her falling off a horse. Yeah probably a good time to just end it. If the show went on for 2 more years I wouldnt be able to take 2 more seasons of Michelle focused episodes where shes doing the same thing her sisters did like kissing boys and becoming a teenager. No thanks.
