  • This presentation is a Keerthanam on Lord Shiva, Mahadeva Shiva Shambho, written by Thanjavur Shankara Aiyyar. This Mohiniattam item is set to Ragam Revathi and Talam Adi. The story of Markandeya and the story of Ravan veena has been portrayed in this choreography.
    About the Artiste
    Dr Sampreetha Kesavan, is a Mohiniyattam Performer, a Lecturer at Department of Malayalam University of Madras, and a Malayalam Poet settled in Chennai. She is the Director of Hamsini School of Dance in Medavakkam and Kolathur, Chennai.
    Dr K Sampreetha, is the recipient of Yuva Kala Ratna in 2016, Kanak Nruthya Pratibha in 2017, Konark Nruthya Ratna in 2018, Nruthyanganasree Samman in 2019, Natya Kala Ratna in 2020 and also a Kerala Sahitya Academy Awardee for poetry.
    Mohiniattam
    Mohiniattam is one of the eight classical dance styles of India. It is a popular Indian traditional dance form from Kerala, now practiced and performed worldwide during Indian dance festivals and festivals of South India. Mohiniyattam dance gets its name from the word Mohini - a mythical enchantress. Originally a solo Indian dance form performed by female dance artists, the song is rendered in Manipravala which is an amalgamation of Sanskrit and Malayalam language. Mohiniattam is a graceful Indian Classical Dance Form that is known to incorporate the lasya form of dance, with very little or no tandava element. Instruments played during a Indian Classical Mohiniattam performance comprise cymbals, veena, idakka, mridangam and flute.
    Some of the popular Mohiniattam dance artists across the world are Gopika erma, Neena Reddy, Sunanda Nair; Smitha Rajan, Kalamandalam Kalyanikutty Amma and Jayyaprabha Menon.
    Mohiniattam is an Important Dance Style and is performed in Indian dance festivals & Indian Cultural Events. Dance has always been an integral form of Indian Heritage, Culture & Tradition. Indian Classical Dance Forms have also found their way into the commercial Indian Film Industry. Dance music videos in various Indian are also inspired by Traditional Dance Forms & Classical Dance Styles.
