    To celebrate Fire Emblem's 30’th anniversary, I am doing a Fire Emblem character spotlight on the original protagonist of Fire Emblem, the Hero King Marth!
    Marth (Mars in the anime) is a character from the Fire Emblem series of video games. He is the central protagonist and Lord-class character of the original game, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, and its sequel Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem, as well as their respective remakes.
    As the first Lord character in the Fire Emblem franchise and one of the first Fire Emblem characters introduced to the west through Super Smash Bros. Melee, Marth is one of the most recognizable characters in the franchise

      Honestly, Marth is one of my favorite FE characters. Sure, I like him in smash and enjoy playing him in that game, but his actual character and style is what made me like him.
      Plus, he was the first person in a video game I saw with the same hairstyle as me as a little kid, so that helped. lmao (...yes i still have the same hair style, except it's more like melee marth's now because of quarantine lack of haircut)

    How fitting.
    Marth is the hero of Fire Emblem, THE hero of Fire Emblem. His iconic blue hair and sword has been the face of the series, for three decades. A hero we've seen time and time again, and a man often overlooked. Without him, there would be no Sigurd, Seliph, Ike, Ephraim, Hector....every other lord we've come to love.
    He is a man that fights alongside his friends, to save his homeland, to tackle with the dark dragon and Gharnef.
    Marth is Fire Emblem. Fire Emblem is Marth. May this man never fade from our hearts.

    I feel like saying marth is a "generic sword lord" is pretty much completely unwarranted since he's the guy who started that stereotype. I dont think it's fair to knock marth for being what we now consider to be the normal, since he's what started it all and didnt have anybody else to go off of.

    Ah Marth, hero of Fire Emblem: Melee. Under the tutelage of his mentor, Ken, he fought against the foxaketes, who could kill anybody with their shine magic. He fought valiantly, and eventually defeated the king of the foxaketes, Captain Medealcon, and killed his hype for 2 decades. With his legendary sword, the Twoforwardairsandaspike, he was nearly unbeatable. Marth’s my favourite.

    The ending of FE3 is actually pretty sad if you think about it. Marth probably just wanted a peaceful life in Altia with Caeda but because of the second war, he felt like he had no choice but to step up and be responsible for everything and rule an entire empire as Hero-King. He gave up his home and a more stress-free life just to ensure that the peace was permanent this time.
    I think that best exemplifies Marth's personality, he never places himself above anyone else, not his friends nor his people. He's one of the truest heroes in the series.

    My opinion on Marth ever since Melee will always be that he's criminally underrated. People often called Roy the cooler looking Lord back then, but when I played Shadow Dragon for the first time; I realized that he was way more than just a dude with a Sword.
    Where Roy looked cool, Marth in his actual game struggled emotionally and often put himself down despite being 3 years older than Roy. Whereas Roy was confident, and somehow didn't carry emotional baggage after seeing Hector die. Heroes may have improved Roy personality-wise, but Marth was an emotional character from the very beginning.
    This comment isn't meant to attack Roy, but since these two were meant to light the franchise's fire in the rest of the world; Marth came to be an amazing Lord that I could definitely see myself in. Hence why I'll always appreciate him, even if his game wasn't technically the first to be released worldwide.
    Here's to many more years of Fire Emblem to come, and thanks to Marth for giving them to us.

      Marth, personality-wise is the best in Shadow Dragon. I liked the conversations in that game a lot. If you pay attention to everything he says you see that he has a lot of character.
      In Shadow Dragon he's a kind young man but not weak and naive. I don't like him that much in New Mystery though.

      Tbf, in some of Roy's supports, it is revealed that confidence he has during the war, was only a facade to hide his growing depression and struggle as he tries to realistically win a war without casualties. He has to be strong because everyone looks up to him and places their expectations in him to see through the end.
      Admittedly, he could have gotten more fleshed out (From what I heard, the raw Japanese translation had more 'uniqueness' in his dialogue) and it didn't help that his portrait was *fixed*. That aside, he had meaningful conversations with Guiniverre which made him feel more down to earth in a sense. This is just my 2 cents on Roy's part but I do wholeheartedly agree about Marth

      It is stated time and again that Ike is someone who "treats his friends like family." I think the reason he is close to Soren and Ranulf is because they are the two people closest to him who are of different races (Branded and Laguz) and Ike is meant to be someone who brought people of all races together.

    Another bit of trivia: his original name is Mars, like the Roman god of war. However, due to how the Japanese script works, the translation of his name Mars is マルス - Ma-ru-su. As his name got translated back to English, the translation team got his name wrong and rather than being translated back to Mars it became Marth since 'su' can also be a stand in for a 'th' sound. Strangely enough, the anime got his name correct with Mars, but Marth seems like a more natural name for him that he claims well.

    I love this video,but I think a bit more can be said about Marth's personality. It's best shown in Shadow Dragon, especially in the chapter he takes back his homeland. After taking back Altea he says to Nyna "I thought there would be something. Some remnant of my old life to come back to. But there's nothing." This is one of the best examples of Marth's more hidden somber side. This, along with other examples like how he speaks to Jagen on the boat at the end of the prologue of how he feels about losing his home, and Nyna's mentioning of how she sees how he feels sorrow at every fallen ally but bears through it. All of these together paint a picture of someone with a sad, heartbreaking life. But also someone who can persevere through it.
    As he keeps going through all of what life throws at him. A large majority of that driven by his sense of duty. Anyone can write a character and say "this guy's very duty-bound." But the writing for Marth, especially in shadow dragon, shows it beautifully. The best example of this is, again, shown in the Shadow Dragon Altea chapter. Despite the hollow victory, the pain he feels, the sadness that fills him, Marth insists on addressing his people. At this point, he states "I am a prince before I am a son or a brother" That is the best moment to show his hidden sorrow and his strong sense of duty. And for that, I think Marth's a pretty damn good character. Classic, as you said.

      FINALLY!! Someone who understands!! I love Marth in Shadow Dragon.
      I like how he responds to Astram when he threatens to behead Marth and how after Malledus gives him a history lessen he responds with "I do know my history you know.
      Also when Nyna reveals her love for Camus he says "I won't make any promises but I'll do what I can" I hate it when protagonists make dumb promises so that made me like him more.
      And at one point in the game Marth explains how he hated Gra and Grust but he never once thought about what was going through their heads. He still hates them but he says that hate isn't all he feels for them anymore.
      There's just a lot of little things that he says in Shadow Dragon that really make me like him. Too bad they messed him up in New Mystery.

Like when general Lang accuses him of ordering Ogma to steal Yubello and Yumina and Marth insists he didn't but assures Lang that he wishes he did. FE as a whole was sadly tainted by the toxic side of Smash fanbase. It's a massive shame because this series is arguably up there with Mario and Zelda as one of Nintendo best franchises. And yet what does it get in return? A bunch of salty Smash fans that are needlessly upset over their biases not being catered to.
      Now, I'm not saying nobody should raise an eyebrow over the FE representation in Smash Bros. Even I do have issues with it now that I know so much about this series (and no, it's not the swords or the quantity of characters I have issues with). But to write off the entire franchise just because Nintendo tasked Sakurai maybe one too many characters from the series feels needlessly unfair.

    Gotta say I do like Marth a lot. He just gets kinda overshadowed by characters with bolder personalities (Hector, Ike, Claude etc.) Also I really like how Lucina draws strength from his legend and even adopts his identity to give herself the courage she needs to complete her mission. He is a true role model.

    Marth's constantly altering strength/usefulness in his games is actually kinda funny to me, cause in fanfiction he's either written as a prissy whiner or a humble, down-to-earth prince; there is NO in-between.

      @LoudToon99 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Kris from what I observed feels like an afterthought. Sure, they started the avatar trend FE would take from then on, but Robin and Byleth massively did that aspect better (we don't talk about Corrin, at least in Fates). Heck, even Intelligent Systems forgets they exist.

    • @Jordan3DS
      @Jordan3DS 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LoudToon99 Alex Ramirez Personally, Byleth is the only one that I think is done semi-well (mostly since he doesn't talk, he has an actual design that's preset, and everyone doesn't immediately start sucking his dick the moment he meets them). Intelligent Systems always makes the mistake of making the avatar a "super god self insert that everybody adores and can do no wrong".

      I mean Kris did ask to be left out of history.

    • @Jordan3DS
      @Jordan3DS 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@custom-r That's the most trite, lazy way to force a new character in, though. "Oh, Kris wasn't in the original Mystery because he didn't want to be remembered! This is the TRUE story!"
      Honestly, I think it would have been really cool if Kris turned out to be working with Gharnef or something, kinda like Katarina with her assassin's group. Then, all of his forced dialogue defending/praising Marth would make sense, because he's trying to worm his way in to his inner circle. Imagine a Fire Emblem game that actively *takes the avatar away from you* and makes them a villain that you have to fight instead. The player is theoretically supposed to connect and identify with the avatar character the most out of the whole cast, so it would be a pretty crazy plot twist. It would also explain why he was "left from history", there could be something about Marth trying to forget the betrayal and bury it, so that he only has good memories of his former friend.

    • @custom-r
      @custom-r 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Jordan3DS That's not a bad idea. Also thank you for not purely dunking on Kris like everyone else.
      I feel while Awakening partly did what you're talking about, Kris being the one to be used against the main party would be an interesting new idea. I mean it's one the series never really did commit to, at least as far as I know. Perhaps a Mystery remake would do that.

It’s totally fine to see the story as revolving around the particular characters that you’re partial to.". The same interview also says Hardin and Lena were fan favourite characters which makes FE3 book 2 pretty bold I feel. The 1994 with Shouzou Kaga and Hironobu Sakaguchi (creator of Final Fantasy) also featured on Shumpulations is another good read (if less interesting in regarding to what Fire Emblem is trying to accomplish).

    Shadow Dragon was the first Fire Emblem game I played. I enjoyed it greatly and a lot of that had to do with Marth. I like his story, it feels like I am reading about a real person in history at times. I have played through Shadow Dragon 4 times and in my two hard five runs he has been one of the cores of my army. Marth will always hold a place in my heart for getting me into Fire Emblem.
    Awhile back I was bouncing around characters in smash trying to find someone I liked and I couldn't find one that I felt a connection with. I landed on cloud for awhile in smash 4 but after I played Shadow Dragon I started to main Marth and I still main him in Ultimate.
